Nokia (Mostly) Acquires Scalado Tech Behind BlackBerry 10 Camera

 Keynote camera BlackBerry 10

While at BlackBerry World 2012 we were very impressed with RIM’s demo of one of the features of the BlackBerry 10 Camera. It allows you to rewind certain frames of a picture to get everyone smiling and was based on technology from Scalado. Now Nokia has announced that they have acquired Scalado though not in an outright acquisition. They have acquired their developers, technologies, and IP portfolio according to Engadget but not the whole company. They think this is because Scalado has outstanding obligations to RIM, HTC, and others.

I am not sure how much of a difference this will make since this is just one feature of many in BlackBerry 10 and not a whole key program but still it is a noteworthy development. It also makes me wonder what RIM’s agreement with Scalado entitles them to.

Thanks @pb_and_jam for the tip!
