BlackBerry Lays Off 120 Employees in Waterloo

BlackBerry Offices Waterloo

BlackBerry just handed out another round of pink slips in their Waterloo office. They confirmed that they have let go about 120 employees to CBC and that the employees were part of Blackberry’s product development and wireless technology teams. This could all be part of their new deal with Foxconn where they no longer need such capabilities in house. This is all part of BlackBerry’s restructuring plan so its going to continue for a bit longer.

BlackBerry had the following to say about the layoffs:

"BlackBerry is working hard to return to profitability and we continue to optimize our resources to meet our mandatory operational targets. As such, this week’s employee reductions impact BlackBerry’s U.S. and Canadian operations with approximately 120 employees in the Waterloo, Ont., area. These employees were part of BlackBerry’s product development and wireless technology team."

The employees who were laid off used to work in Building 2 which was sold to the University of Waterloo late last year and is currently being leased back by BlackBerry.

  1. It looks like these were world class wireless engineers that had developed the in-house radio. See the April 5th article in the Record
