BlackBerry is currently rolling out beta version of BBM Video for cross-platform video calling in Asia-Pacific to incude iPhone and Android users. They state this is the ‘final phase’ in the roll-out before production release, which is all exciting to hear. Personally I was starting to feel BBM was leading down a path of great uncertainty. Now that all major players are now seeing this, will BlackBerry and BBM be able to recover the user numbers?
They have also noted in the Inside BlackBerry post that phone number registration is also coming in the later this Summer (North Hemishere).
How to Get Started
You don’t have to sign up or get approval to use the new cross-platform BBM Video. You do need:
- An Android device with OS 4.4 (KitKat) or higher OR an iOS device with iOS 8 or higher
- A BBM Contact with one of these devices
In your BBM, initiate a chat session with your contacts just like you always do, and then just tap the video icon in the upper-right corner. BBM will give you the option of making a voice or video call (provided your contact is also eligible to participate). Tap the video icon and start talking. (You might want to check that you don’t have any salad in your teeth first.)
