Review: MapsWithMe Pro

MapsWithMe-Pro-Offline-Maps

MapsWithMe is a detailed offline maps of all countries of the world. Unlike the other map applications like BlackBerry Map or Google Maps, this allows you to download the maps beforehand, which is especially useful, if you are traveling. That said, how well will this application fare?

Before we start, let me declare that this application is not a native application, but rather an Android application. Those who know me knows that I am pretty biased against the Android ports, but this is an exception.

Performance

After installing the application, you will realize that unlike many other Android application, this is very smooth and loads very very quickly. For a matter of fact, I have been running this on my BlackBerry Q5, Q10, Z10 and Z30, and this application is working like a charm. I am running on the official OS 10.2.1.2102 (and 10.3 Beta on the Q10) so you should be able to expect similar performance on your various devices as well.

Using the program

In the first screen after launching the program, it will check your location and then download the appropriate maps for your location first. So, make sure you have a data plan or Wi-Fi for the first initialization!

Once downloaded, you will be at your current location on the map. On the right bottom corner lies a small 3 dot which acts like the menu to bring out the menu. Alternatively, just swipe down from the top and it does the same as well, but in this case, with the pesky “show bar” bar popping up.

To download and pre-load the maps is dead easy. Just select download maps, and it will bring up the list of available maps for download. To delete or download additional maps is as simple as tapping on the country itself.

By right, we are supposed to be able to select the internal storage or SD card for the maps download location, however, I am unable to do so.

Apart from just being a just a map where you can search your location, other locations and setting up “bookmarks”, however, it lacks of something that other applications offer: Navigation. I know for many, this is a kill factor, however, for the rest who like it as a map, this is a very good utility.

Conclusion

Powered with OpenStreetMap, the MapsWithMe Pro has proven itself to be one useful utility, however, not the most feature-packed as we anticipated it to be.

Available in the BlackBerry World for US$4.99, do check it out!
