Some more details are coming out on the whole strategic review and possible sale of BlackBerry played out. We heard quite a few rumors that Lenovo was considering the acquisition but nothing ever panned out. Now CBC is reporting that BlackBerry tried pitching a Lenovo purchase to the federal government and was shut down. They were told that “either a Chinese or Russian investment would be met with stiff opposition.” On the other hand Ottawa decided to take with one hand and give back with another…
Ottawa gave BlackBerry and early Christmas present when they received an early payment of its tax refund which totaled $696 million. That was a huge deal that helped bolster BlackBerry’s cash position when it dearly needed it. Ottawa made a point to help BlackBerry accelerate the receipt of a portion of the tax refund ASAP. Its nice to see that BlackBerry has some friends in Ottawa looking out for them.
