BlackBerry Starts Handing Out Pink Slips in Waterloo (300 This Week)

BlackBerry Canada

BlackBerry put out the shocking news last month that they would lay off almost half of their workforce. Now 570 News is reporting that the layoffs have begun with 300 employees in BlackBerrys Waterloo offices. This is sad news for the employees being laid off and the ones who remain. The whole downsizing strategy has been sloppy from what we have heard and what we is being reported by the WSJ and others. Here is BlackBerry’s statement:

“As previously mentioned, we are in a period of transition and we must focus on enhancing our financial results to be in a better position to compete in this current mobile environment. As such, BlackBerry has implemented an ongoing workforce reduction that will impact approximately 4,500 employees globally over the next three quarters. This week’s reduction includes approximately 300 employees in Waterloo.

We recognize our local employees’ hard work on behalf of our company and the difficulty of this news. And we will do everything in our power to treat our employees with compassion, while offering support during this time of transition.”

Best of luck to those laid off in finding new endevors and I hope those that remain can still turn around this ship.
