The patent trolls are still banging their chests. The latest to come out from under the bridge is Graphics Properties which used to be called Silicon Graphics which filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and is now owed by private investment firms after selling their operations. Reuters is reporting that Graphics Properties is suing RIM along with Apple, HTC, Sony, and Samsung over a single patent in Wilmington, Delaware. Here is how they describe it:
The patent at issue relates to a computer graphics process that turns text and images into pixels to be displayed on screens. According to the lawsuits, the defendants’ infringing devices include Apple’s iPhone and the HTC EVO4G, LG Thrill, Research in Motion Torch, Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy S II, and Sony Xperia Play smartphones.
I have not managed to find the actual patent filing but it sounds like they may have a patent on using a screen… They also are only suing RIM for damages caused by the patents use in the BlackBerry Torch line which is odd. Let us know if you find the patent!
