Based on data derived from monthly downloads of my free game Pixelated, I have estimated the number of PlayBooks sold each month. The graph shows the cumulative totals of these estimates.
Of note is the slope of the graph over the past few months. The past three months, which correspond with RIM’s most recent (and not yet reported) financial quarter show a dramatic increase in the number of PlayBooks in the wild. According to these estimates the total number of PlayBooks sold has doubled in the past three months. As of the end of November RIM had shipped 800k devices. Given how lean inventory was at that time, I think that it is possible that RIM will be able to announce 1M PlayBooks shipped over the past three months.
I think that it is safe to assume that most of the increased interest is due to the PlayBook’s reduction in price to $200, although I am sure that Christmas helped as well.
