RIM has been talking about making developer code signing keys free for awhile now and they have finally executed on that plan. For some reason they did not make a big announcement about it but you can now pick up code signing keys for both the Tablet OS and Smartphone OS for FREE! It seems like they opened up the doors to free code signing a few days ago when they made it possible to sign PlayBook applications. RIM still needs a valid credit card which they will authorize for $1 but not charge so the hold will be there for a few days until it drops. They claim they need this to verify your identity.
Personally I am still against the whole requirement for code signing applications in the first place since it seems to provide Mickey Mouse security. Especially if anybody with a credit card can get code signing keys what is the point? Still it is nice to see that RIM has made one of the more annoying roadblocks to BlackBerry developers an easier pill to swallow.
There are still different code signing keys for the Tablet OS and Smartphone OS but both are free. You can simply register for them at www.blackberry.com/SignedKeys/
