Rumor: RIM Renaming WES Conference?

wes-2010-party-posterThe latest rumor floating around is that RIM is planning on renaming their Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) conference. According to BGR the change is going to be made because RIM is “changing the direction of the conference to better reflect RIM’s current focus on its QNX operating system as well as other developer content.” There is no word on what the new name will be but I think RIM needs to be careful if they do this.

The WES conference was intended for business executives and developers to learn about how they can better use the device in an enterprise setting. Over the years RIM has started to mingle in a bit more consumer focus into the conference which was acceptable but most of the attendees were there looking for business solutions. I think it would be a mistake for RIM to combine the conference into a consumer focused conference but they may be able to pull it off. The thing is that companies need to still have a conference where they can meet BlackBerry enterprise solution providers and developers which is RIM’s core business.

I think RIM could combine the two enterprise and consumer sides but even at WES this year you could tell that they were two totally different audiences. One side wanted to learn about enterprise IT policies and employee mobility and on the consumer side they are talking about music synchronization and multimedia. They just don’t jive well other than being provided by the same device… They are just coming at it from different angles.

What do you think? Any ideas on what RIM should rename the conference to? Sadly I kind of liked the Wireless Enterprise Symposium name…
