In an unexpected move RIM has purchased Cellmania this week. TechCrunch spotted the following message on Cellmania’s website:
Cellmania is not a company I had heard of before but it has been around since 1999 building mobile platforms for cellphone carriers. They offer everything from branded app stores to content distribution for carriers. It is not clear how Cellmania fits into the puzzle for RIM’s future but maybe it fills in a gap they needed. I am not sure if they were brought on for their talent or technology but only time will tell. Maybe it even has to do with their investment through the Partners Fund in Handango through PocketGear…
Either way it looks like RIM is making a big push into the mobile marketplace and App World is just the beginning.

Infact there are quite a few companies like that. Prior to Apple and RIM opening up their platform to third party developers, the only way to do business in the mobile space was to build relationship with carriers and use the distribution channels provided by them.
I wouldn’t be surprised if their products are inferior compared to companies like Mobihand since these relied more on building business relationship with carriers than building a quality product.
