SHAPE let us know that they have updated their IM+ Talk BlackBerry app to version 4.2. This update gives the app a nice user interface overhaul that REALLY looks nice. In case you don’t know IM+ Talk lets you make free Skype calls over Wi-Fi in half duplex mode (like a walkie talkie). You can also use the app to see who is online and chat with other Skype users.
Change log for v4.2:
- Completely redesigned user interface with new theme
- Conversations view
- New messages indicators
- Many bugfixes
The IM+ Talk app is a bit pricey at $29.95 but no other app currently offers Skype VOIP calls so it kind of has its niche. Let us know if you pick it up.
NOTE: You can make free VoIP calls via Wi-Fi if you select “VoiP only” or “VoIP preferred” in the IM+ Talk settings. VOIP calls work in half-duplex mode so you would need to use the convenience key of your BlackBerry to switch between “talk” and “listen” modes (like a walkie-talkie). Calls made outside of Wi-Fi zones will just use a callback method that uses your Skype credits.
