Now here is an interesting compromise that RIM is trying to broker with India. IBN News is reporting that minutes from the meeting between Indian officials and RIM show that RIM first explained to officials how BlackBerry Enterprise email works and how it is only encrypted and decrypted by the companies BES. IBN says that after some persuasion RIM said:
…they can provide the metadata of the message like Internet Protocol address of BES and PIN and International Mobile Equipment Identity of the BlackBerry mobile,…
Metadata is kind of like the headers of an email though I didn’t even know RIM had access to that for BIS email. For example the metadata of a email might say what device is sending it and to what BES server it is going to for processing. Not much beyond that unless they found a way to break 3DES encryption or AES algorithms.
So far it looks like Indian officials are not happy with this compromise…
