Yesterday I posted the unboxing of the BlackBerry Torch 9800 I got from RIM and the one thing that has been bothering me so far is that it does not come with a case. I can see AT&T demanding this to sell more cases but it is a bit stingy on their part.
Naturally the first thing I did was try to put brand new 9800 in my BlackBerry Bold 9700 case. It fits like a glove but the problem is that the sleeper magnet is not in the right position!!! That means that when the 9800 is in the holster it does not “go to sleep” and avoid clicking buttons and turning on the screen. I then proceeded to try to fit it into a BlackBerry Bold 9650 case I had lying around and it had the same exact problem. The 9650 case was also a bit bigger and the device moved around. It seems like both the 9650 and 9700 have their magnet right in the middle of the device while the 9800 has it on the bottom.
So I decide to start digging in my old but still good drawer for some alternatives. I first tried it in a larger Nutshell holster made for the 8700c and that also didn’t put it to sleep and it was not a good fit. My last ditch was to try a stock OEM BlackBerry 8800 case I had lying in the bottom of my drawer.
Eureeka! It fits AND it puts it to “sleep.”
Its not the nicest case but it works and it fits nicely though I think it has a tiny bit of movement to the sides. The best part is that this means you can pick up a case for you 9800 on the cheap! The model number on mine is the HDW-13789-001 like this one which does not have the stitching down the middle like the newer model. I don’t think that makes much of a difference. Still now I am kind of curious how it will fit in a stock BlackBerry Curve 8300 holster. I am going to try and scrounge one up tomorrow!

I just bought the torch and bought the $40 case…After reading your article, I remembered I have one of the belt clips at home. I am definitely taking the clip back. $40 for a belt clip is ridiculous.
