I have to admit that I am a die hard Amazon fan. I order like 3-6 products a week from their site and take advantage of their Amazon Prime service. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos went on record (via Mashable) last week saying that they are now doing over $1 billion in sales per year through mobile devices. That is a pretty successful mobile strategy yet Amazon is slacking behind PayPal when it comes to rolling out their Amazon Payment system to mobile devices and apps. Hopefully they will come as an alternative to PayPal so there is more competition in that space.
I am loving this new trend where retailers realize the potential for mobile sales. RIM sponsored a recent Forbes Insights research report about the mobile retail space. They found that 73% of the 300 major retailers surveyed had some mobile initiative in place. Another 20% are evaluating the mobile retail space.
In short this means we are going to see more and more retailers step into mobile apps and websites in a big way. Their mobile services will no longer be an add on service but rather a medium of its own.
