For the last 2 months I have noticed that RIM has really started to put BlackBerry Messenger as a key differentiator in advertising and promotions. Let me give you an example. Kevin let us know that at the Big Music Festival in Owen Sound, ON last weekend, and on a day where the temperatures were pushing 35 degrees, he noticed Blackberry signs around the outdoor venue with BBM barcodes. If you scanned the barcode and show the RIM people at the BlackBerry tent that you did, they gave you free water, sunscreen and hand sanitizer if you owned a Blackberry 🙂 As an added bonus, scanning the barcode also entered you into a contest to meet the headlining band after the show.
Now that is cool right? The BBM promotions are all over the place including their contest for $5,000 if you tell RIM how you use BBM. RIM also let us know about the usage spikes for BBM showing how critical of an indicator they consider it. RIM has also recently started pushing a whole new display and TV advertising initiative for BBM. I have been seeing BBM advertisements all over NYC and Kevin over @CrackBerry compiled a list of the recent BBM Ads that you can see after the jump.
I really think RIM has a good thing going by promoting BBM. They really need to milk the widespread usage of BBM to their advantage. I just hope they also add more features to BBM at the same time. Imagine if RIM added a desktop or corporate client for BBM. Or if they just simply opened up a web client.
What do you think? Have you seen any unique BlackBerry ads?
