RIM Asks for Developer Input/Feedback on Widget API’s & Gears

Developers-drafting With BlackBerry Storm 9530 OS 5.0 already out the door this is a great move in the right direction for RIM. Tim, Manager of Development Tools @RIM, put up a thread on the official BlackBerry Support forums asking for developer feedback on the Widget API’s and Gears support in OS 5.0.

Now that they have the initial API’s all ready they are asking for feedback on what API’s should be added next. This feature looks pretty extensible since Tim says there will be a way to create your own JavaScript BlackBerry Widget API’s in the future. He asks that you first check out the existing BlackBerry Widget API’s as well as what is offered in Gears on the 5.0 operating system and then let them know your feedback.

I am really liking the direction that Widgets are heading at RIM. Dusan over @IntoMobile spotted an announcement that RIM will be supporting Joint Innovation Lab standards for Widgets so widgets created for LG, RIM, Samsung, and Sharp will all work on all devices. I doubt it would work as well considering all the BlackBerry specific API’s that exist but this space is where RIM can really let OS 5.0 shine!

Now I just need to finish reading BlackBerry Widgets for Dummies so I can create one for BerryReview… 🙂

Thanks Josep for sending this one in!
