Rogers has just announced the release of their 8120 Wifi BlackBerry. The best part is that Rogers is the first Canadian carrier to support UMA. I am surprised it took RIM so long! UMA means you can make calls over WiFi. I wish AT&T would follow suit but its taking awhile for carriers to realize that technologies such as UMA and the way of the future.
The cost of UMA is a bit high in my opinion:
With Rogers Home Calling Zone, customers can use the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 to make unlimited voice calls, when in their home calling zone. For $15 per month customers can make unlimited local calls, or for $20 per month customers can make unlimited local and Canada-wide long distance calls. Calls seamlessly transfer between UMA and cellular networks, and calls originating over UMA do not count against a customer’s monthly allotment of voice minutes.

With Rogers Home Calling Zone, a wireless router and a high-speed Internet connection, customers can use the same phone inside and outside the home

RIM has no stance here, It’s the carriers stopping the usage of UMA on the devices, your example of AT&T was perfect, it’s a money grab for AT&T to NOT offer you UMA on their services they make more off of you that way, this is clearly shown in Rogers pricing as well, it shows their trying to gain some of the soon to be lost income from two sources 1) The plans, higher then normal priced UMA plans 2) Device pricing..$250 for the 8120, when Rogers sells the 8110 for $150…is wifi really that much more to place on a device…nope, they just want to make up that lost revenue.
