Stefano sent over this very interesting website. There has been a BlackBerry Curve Challenge going on for the past month that started in Boston on May 10th. They then moved on to Minneapolis and will be in Portland on June 7th. The end of the race is in San Francisco on June 14th. The funny part is that this is the first I have heard of it.
From the race description:
Get ready for the BlackBerry® Curve™ Challenge: Destination Alcatraz – a fun, high-energy race through these amazing American cities – Boston, Minneapolis, Portland and San Francisco! It’s a one-of-a-kind experience where you’ll flex your physical and mental muscles in a scavenger-hunt style race using a new BlackBerry® Curve™ 8330 smartphone with Verizon Wireless service! Top teams in each city will receive a BlackBerry® Curve™ 8330 smartphone. And the winning teams from Boston, Minneapolis and Portland win a trip to San Francisco to compete in the Ultimate Challenge: Alcatraz Island!
Now get ready for the GRAND PRIZE: Each winning team mate receives a magnificent ONE-week, all-expense-paid vacation to one of these world-famous destinations: Rome, Paris, Maui or the Mayan Riviera!
Well if you live in Boston or raced in Minneapolis or Portland let us know how it goes. This seems to be a great way to win a free 8330.

Wonder if this is put on by the same people who do the Urban Challenge adventure race (the “uc” in the hostname implies it is). One of the things that differentiated the Urban Challenge from a more typical adventure race is that use of cell phones was allowed and even rather mandatory, so it makes sense that it would be sponsored by mobile players.
You really have to know the host city well though – or know someone who does. I did it in Seattle a few years ago and found out how little I knew about this city. 🙂

The rules for this one state you MUST use the Verizon Blackberry Curve that they supply to each team. Funny I think, since Verizon Blackberry GPS only works with the VZNavigator software Verizon supplies (and charges $10/month to use).
