Review: Electric Pocket’s TxtForward
Rating:

6.5
Link: http://electricpocket.com
Cost: $7.95 @ The BerryReview Store
TxtForward is a very simple application with a huge potential. The software takes incoming SMS messages and forwards them to the email address of your choice. Now many people wonder “Why in the heck would I want to do this?” Well, there are many reasons!
- Great way to permanently archive your text messages by forwarding them to a Gmail account where they will be archived forever.
- If you have multiple devices, you can get all your SMS messages delivered on one device.
- If your place of business doesn’t allow you to have your cell phone at work, you can forward messages to your email and never miss an important text.
- Maybe you have a completely different idea up your sleeve.
This software is not perfect however, I do have a few gripes. When you receive an incoming text message, the “From” field displays; “txtForward”. I would much rather see something along the lines of “txt-406-555-555″ or something that let you know who was messaging you. If you reply to one of the messages using the “r” key, the address you reply to is noreply@txtforward.com rather than the actual phone number of the person who texted you. There is also no form of threaded messages, which is particularly annoying when a message is longer than 160 characters, as the application splits those texts into two separate emails.
Pros:
- Easily archive messages to your email.
- Receive SMS messages via email when you don’t have your phone handy.
- Small program and incredibly simple to use.
Cons:
- No threaded messages.
- 160-character max limit.
- Reply-to address issue.
- Kind of pricey for as simple as it is.
Summary:
All in all, the application has enabled me to archive my text messages in case I ever need to look back at them for work. And for that reason alone it is worth the $8 bucks. After all, this is only version 1.0 of the application. I’m sure that, with a bit more interest from you folks, the developers will be back to work and make it better! This program has all the potential in the world and I hope the development team realizes that!

Michael over at BlackBerryThemes.co.uk has just let me know that he has four new FREE themes posted on his website. Personally I’m a big fan of the “Bottom Dock” themes. With the release of Plazmic 4.5, themes just keep getting better and better. The themes are posted for the 88**,83** and 81** series devices. Keep up the great work Michael!

I assume that since these themes were created with the new Plazmic SDK they are for OS 4.5 only. The themes are only available via Desktop Downloads, but they are worth the little extra effort! Check them out here.

Mike from gWhiz reminded me that back to school season is right around the corner. I thought it would be a great time to remind everybody about the 3 free applications that gWhiz released not to long ago. These applications are mostly targeted towards students. The three are:
gFlash+ - A flashcard and trivia application with multiple learning modes. gFlash+ includes the ability for you to both download our gWhiz flashcards and more importantly, create your own!
gRef - Fast mobile access to your very own personalized reference library. Select reference guides from our gWhiz Catalog or easily create new ones. You can even email your individual “Cheat Sheets” to your friends!
gCalc! - A university level graphing calculator that works right on your smartphone. Eliminates the need to purchase and carry a separate device. Email graphs straight from your phone. No more searching for that USB cable!
You can check out demos of all three applications at www.gwhizmobile.com. You can also download the applications free at this link. These are some great free applications for a BlackBerry toting student.

I was having some issues with my Gmail (BIS) account yesterday and finally figured out what was happening. Google forgot to renew their SSL certificate for Gmail. This caused most of the mail clients that connect to Gmail to throw up red flags. I wonder who is getting the flack about this at Google…
GigaOM managed to score a screenshot of the expired certificate. Its interesting to note that even the largest of companies can screw up on the smallest things.

With a release date right around the corner this was inevitable. Turns out that two retailers have just started accepting pre-orders for the BlackBerry Bold. TigerDirect is offering the Bold unlocked for $649.99 win a ship date ETA of September. Mobile City Online is offering it for $699.99 with a estimated ETA of August 14th.

Not that I would recommend purchasing either of these pre-orders but it is interesting to see the excitement ramping up around the Bold.
It looks like we are set for an exciting few weeks up ahead…

I have not had a chance to try this one out myself so take this at face value. Slifter just released a BlackBerry application with a pretty interesting feature set. It helps you find products and deals based on your current location. You can just search for a product and find a promo or deal. It also seems to be a great tool for doing some comparison shopping if you want to see the going price for a certain item in your neighborhood.
Check it out by pointing your BlackBerry to www.slifter.com
Or check out the press release at this link

Mo just let me know that Bplay has released a slick new FlowBerry theme to follow up on their ground breaking crossbar theme. The theme has a slick coverflow-like menu bar that just looks awesome. Sadly you can not configure the coverflow menu yourself but it does include: Messages, Calendar, Address Book, Media, SMS, BlackBerry Messenger, MemoPad, & Keyboard Lock. The top bar is very clean cut and the icons look very Mac-ish.

You can pick it up for $6.99 at Bplay for your 8100, 8300, & 8800 series device. Bplay recommends OS 4.3+ for optimal animation performance but they do say that it works with all device software.
