Mobile Tech Addicts managed to get their hands on an internal Orange statement vaguely detailing why Orange has suspended shipments of the Bold. Anybody on Orange UK having issues with their Bold?
Internal Orange Statement on the Bold:
“Following reports of software issues with the BlackBerry Bold handset across a variety of mobile operators, Orange has decided to act in the interest of its customers by suspending shipments of the device in the UK. We are currently awaiting feed back from RIM as to when an industry wide fix for these issues will be in place, and expect this suspension to be an interim measure. We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may cause you.”
Next steps: BlackBerry/RIM are doing everything they can to resolve this issue and will be completing full testing and validation to ensure future handsets do not have any quality issues. This may take a couple of weeks so it’s up to us to do what’s best for our customers.
I am dying to know what these software issues are??? My Bold is doing quite well on AT&T…
Thanks Raffy for sending this one in!

Thanks to quite a few of you who sent this in! It looks like RIM has updated their IM applications to version 2.1.37 from 2.1.33 that we had before. In typical RIM fashion there is no change log so please report back with any changes!

Thanks to Ruben, Enrico, & Person for sending this one in! (Just as an FYI you can’t win the contest with a dummy email address)

Tom let me know about an article on RCRwireless that really surprised me. Verizon has just let everybody know that they will be charging companies that send Mobile Terminated SMS messages 3 cents per message. This is on top of current fees that cost a fraction of a penny or more. This means that services such as Twitter, GOOG411, and your bank are now going to cough up a bunch more dough to send you an SMS message. Most of them will probably just stop offering the service.
What the hell is wrong with Verizon??? The receiver, you, already pays to get the message. Why do they need to burn the candle from both ends! These companies sending SMS messages to you are making Verizon money. All this will do is make companies remove these services and thus make Verizon less money!
I just love how Verizon is trying to justify the new fee to cover their rising overhead for delivering SMS.
I still cant get over the fact that SMS messages cost about $1,310 per megabyte!!!
Chalk that up as another money hungry win for the best network on earth…

It looks like T-Mobile Germany has put the BlackBerry 8900 Curve AKA Javelin on their site. They are claiming availability in November but don’t hold your breath. Nothing else really new but that means the Storm is going to have some competition! Talk about a holiday season for RIM.
Check out the T-Mobile Germany 8900 at this link (Google Translate)
Thanks Tashanna for sending this on in!

I just love to scour the various theme sites to bring our readers the latest and greatest, newly created themes. My fellow BerryReview teammates call me the ‘Theme Queen’ because of it :0)
Well I’ve just found another new, and yes free, theme from the folks at eVeek. And you know that any theme that they develop is going to be a good one. Their new ALIEN theme is no exception. Developed for Blackberry devices 81xx, 83xx & 88xx running OS 4.5 the ALIEN theme is super fantastic. My Berry is sporting it now! I love the luminous blue colors and the way the icons are neatly wrapped around the ‘alien pod’ in the middle. This is an extremely cool theme, I recommend you download it to give it a try for your Berry.

Go to eVeek.com to download OTA or ZIP files.

I have been using MidpSSH for years since it was one of the first SSH clients that supported the BlackBerry and it was free/opensource. With ROVE removing their commercial mobile SSH client from the market MidpSSH is the only option.
Lipstik let me know about a custom build of MidpSSH that she found on the forums that fixes a few of the issues I had with MidpSSH. The modder, Asskick, has made available his own version 1.7.4 beta2 building upon the official 1.7.3 released by Karl (the developer of MidpSSH).
Here is what he added:
- BIS-B support (depends on carrier on which ports you might be able to work, IE on mine they block port 22, but I just changed my sshd port of linux box to a higher port,). When configuring the host, just add :PORT (so it would be IP.OF.SERVER:PORT
- WIFI support
- Application is signed in order to gain access to some RIM protected APIs
MidpSSH has not seen an update since March of this year so this is a much appreciated update. Asskick is also working on other updates. The main upgrade I want in MidpSSH is buffered input like the Rove Mobile SSH client used to have. Let him/her know what you think by posting in this thread on BBforums.
So far this custom build is only available OTA at:
www.deltatech.com.mx/midpssh/beta2/midpssh-bb-ota.jad
Nice work Asskick!

When Brad told me that Profiler was updated I was surprised to find that we have never mentioned it on BerryReview. (I could have sworn we did) Profiler is a application that lets you schedule your profile to switch based on a time of day. You can setup up to 16 of these rules to switch.

The main caveat with this application is that it cannot change the profile if your Berry is locked, holstered, powered off, or you have a IT policy forbidding keystroke injection. The cool part is that if your device is locked or in a holster the application will vibrate letting you know it needs to be taken out of the holster and then the profile will change. Not the best solution but the only one allowed by RIM’s API. Not bad for an application going for $9.95.
Features:
- Support up to 16 scheduled profiles
- Start and end time for each profile
- Supports Custom profiles
- Selective days to activate profile
- Optionally vibrate when device is in Holster
- Optionally vibrate when keyboard is locked
- Schedule Profile from the Calendar application
- Very easy to use
Updates in Version 1.1 from BBForums:
- modified GUI design
- rewrote the schedule core
- removed the date from the schedule. You only need the Hours and Minutes
- added calendar support. You can select New Profile from the menu when you add a new calendar appointment
- added view and clear temp profiles
- more robust
You can pick up profiler in the store for $9.95. There is a free trial available for you to try before you buy.
