We have told you about SameCell before when it was first announced for BlackBerry. The application lets you know when your friends on SameCell are nearby. The SameCell application is now out of beta and has added a bevy of features. The best feature is that the software remains Free!
The SameCell application uses locations of cell towers (and GPS if available) to report your proximity to your friends. It also hooks up with your BlackBerry address book to find you friends that are on SameCell.
They have also recently added a Facebook application that integrates your location with SameCell to let your friends know where you are. The nice part is that SameCell now also works with other phones VIA SMS and with the iPhone and iPod Touch so it now has a bigger audience.
How to get SameCell:
First of all check to make sure your BlackBerry is supported. They support everything after the 7200 series so you should be fine.
Then you just need to visit www.samecell.com/setup from your BlackBerry browser to download the application. Or you can go to this link to email the setup link to your BlackBerry.
If you want to hook it up with your Facebook account check out this link for more info.

We got so many questions about the last screenshot we posted I decided to post some others that I just received. I didn’t realize people were so interested in screen candy
. Hopefully we will be getting more soon…
Keep in mind the same screen of the video is paused in these shots but if you look closely you can get a better idea of what the menu will look like. If you missed the last screenshot head to this link or if you want to try to get into the beta program follow the instructions on this post and last of all if you want to see live shots of the application from CES check them out here.

Jonathan Fisher has released an update to his much lauded BlackBerry Web Shortcuts Application on BlackBerryForums. The new version allows you to store the configuration file and icons on your MicroSD card so that they are always there. Just keep in mind the images have to be .png files that are 32×32 pixels. This is a great resource that we have reviewed previously and is completely free thanks to Jonathan.
Sadly because of the required configuration file edits the install is Desktop Manager only. There is no official product page yet until next week according to Jonathan. You can pick up a copy of the Zip from this link below:
http://northcubed.com/products/blackberryshortcuts/northshortcut.zip
Directions on how to setup the shortcuts by Jonathan:
Usage:
create a directory in the root of your media card called ’shortcut’:
/Media Card/shortcut/
extract the zip and put the config.xml file in the directory once you’ve set it up, for each shortcut you use put the url to link to and the title for the shortcut app:
<shortcut1>http://news.bbc.co.uk</shortcut1>
<title1>BBC News</title1>
Place a png in the directory for each shortcut titled in the format:
/Media Card/shortcut/shortcut1.png
There’s now also ten shortcuts…
Please give me feedback and bug reports, i’ve not tested all ten shortcuts but they should be fine. if after a week there’s no significant issues i’ll put a proper release page up.
please note: there’s zero support for this - it’s free. there’s no OTA install - if you use this internally at your company please please let me know so I can add a credit to our site.

Electronic Pocket, the developers of FlipSide, have just come out with a public beta of their new Ringo product. The Ringo application allows you to replace the built in BlackBerry profiles manager with their own version. The idea is that the Ringo application is much easier to use and simple.
In my opinion Ringo really needs to add some more functionality to be worth the $19.95 they will be asking once this gets out of Beta. I really wish they would add some profile scheduling to the application. On top of that it does not seem to have support for 3rd party applications that have their own profile settings such as Google Talk and Ramble IM.
I have taken a few screenshots below of the new application in action. You can sign up for the Beta yourself at this link but I think Ringo is supposed to launch very soon. For some reason even though it is in Beta you can already buy it from Mobihand.
When you first install the application you will get over 10 different security warning from your device saying that “an application want to access…” just click yes to all of them
. When the application starts you get the following screen:

This is how they disable the RIM profile manager by just turning the sounds off. They were kind enough to include a button to change the profile from the application.

Kevin Doel from FlipSide just sent me an email about a new update to the FlipSide MP3 player we told you about before. The new version allows BlackBerry users to get Last.fm auto-scrobbling support with FlipSide. What that means is that when you listen to a song, the name of the song is sent to Last.fm and added to your listeners profile.
FlipSide users may enable scrobbling of the music they play to get better recommendations and share recently played music with friends via blogs, MySpace, or as a forum signature. Kinda cool if I may say so myself. This feature has been available in a few Windows Mobile MP3 players for awhile now so I am glad the Berry is finally catching up
.
If you are interested you can take a tour of FlipSide or download a free trial to check it out. There is an OTA download option if you visit their website www.flipside.fm from your BlackBerry.

SlingMedia really knows how to build up hype for their new SlingPlayer BlackBerry client. After my terrible screenshots using my compact Canon camera at CES I finally have a high resolution picture to share with you. Check it out after the jump. If you are wondering what a SlingBox or SlingPlayer is check out this Wikipedia article or their website www.slingmedia.com.
Fiona from SlingMedia just sent me this picture and it gives you a better idea of what the player looks like. If anything the player just looks slick. I also noticed the menu has changed from what I saw live at CES. At CES you used the menu button but in this new screenshot it looks like it has a carousel to switch channels. The player itself just looks more well rounded.
If your interested in getting in line to try the SlingPlayer for BlackBerry Beta sign up using the instructions in this previous post.
