A friend of mines BlackBerry was having problems with its profiles and I thought it might help to use BlackBerry Desktop Manager to clear the Profiles database. Turns out that this is not that easy on a device hooked up to a BES! All of the BES synchronized databases are grayed out in the selective/advanced restore options which means that you cannot restore or clear them… For the calendar, contacts, & tasks you can fix this by turning off the wireless sync but you don’t have this option for all the other databases on your BlackBerry.
I thought I was up a proverbial creek until I ran across some great instructions by Lamlamz on how to get around this restriction. Turns out there are two solutions. One requires cooperation from your BES admin and one you can easily do by yourself.
With the help of your BES admin:
- Use BlackBerry manager to find the BlackBerry user
- Right click on the user and select Edit
- Select PIM sync and change “Automatic Wireless Backup Enabled”
- Then hit apply
- Do your selective restore or clear and then set Automatic Wireless Backup Enabled to True.
Without the help of your BES admin:
- Go to settings/options->Advanced Options->Service Books and select the Desktop [Sync] service book
- Click the menu button and select delete.
- Then do your selective restore or clear from your desktop
- Then disconnect your BlackBerry and click the menu button on that same service book and select undelete
Big thanks to Lamlamz for the solution!

When I read about this site on WapReview I had to mention it. Mike created a free site using MobileSiteGalore which lists the FBI Most Wanted Fugitives. This is the same list they have published around the country. The developer also added the most wanted terrorist, missing children, murders, and quite a few others. Very entertaining to pretend you are a bounty hunter during your down time. You never know. With the reward money offered for some of the people on the Most Wanted list you could buy yourself a good couple Bolds…

Sally sent in this interesting link on Google’s Mobile portal. It looks like they are compiling the scores and information about each Summer Games category. They even have a cool mobilized version of the news if you click the link on the bottom of the page…
Check it out by heading to this link on your BlackBerry or for more options check out the list of recommended mobile sites from RIM.

A friend of mine pointed out the mobile version of MSN’s website to me and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it actually looked quite good on my BlackBerry. Obviously I have some gripes like the video not working but that is to be expected since the site is targeted at Windows Mobile users. It has some great content including weather, news, sports, finance, & entertainment. Its especially useful if you like MSNBC, Fox Sports, and Microsoft search.
Its very nice and clean which is really impressive considering how old school RIM’s mobile.blackberry.com website looks in comparison.

Frank just let me know that the Jawbone II has dropped a bit more on some major retailers. I know quite a few people who have been waiting for the price to go down so this is a welcome turn. The two places I have found with it at this new price are Newegg & Amazon.
Let me know if you find any other deals!

After T-Mobile added their extremely cheap ($2 for the whole family) Family Allowance feature it was only a matter of time before other carriers jumped in. Verizon is next with a much more expensive offering of $4.99 per line for the ability to set limitations on voice minutes, messaging, schedules, content filters and whitelists/blacklists. Personally I think these limits features should be a free feature enticing parents to get their kids a cellphone in the first place.
They have also released a Chaperone 2.0 plan for $9.99 a month per line adds the ability to track the device and even track directly from VZ Navigator. Not sure if the Chaperone feature will work for tracking a BlackBerry but the VZ Navigator feature should. Just another way for parents to take the fun out of being a kid.
Check out the Usage Controls at this link and the Chaperone feature at this link.
BTW that kid looks way to happy…

RIM sent out a reminder yesterday that the BlackBerry Developer Conference early bird registration discount is over at the end of August. In short that means $799 instead of $999. The conference is on October 21 and 22 in Santa Clara, California. The deadline for papers is today. I wonder if they got anything interesting…
