Obviously everyone loves free, but to pay $10 for an unlock code is a great price. We spend more money on dumber stuff everyday.

You're right, if you'll actually put your unlocked BB to good use, you'll make that $10 back very quickly by the savings you'll see from no roaming charges, etc. That said, free is free and is always the best.
If you unlock your phone, you can switch to any other network.
If you are traveling abroad, you can use your phone with the local network and do away with roaming charges.
Unlocked phones usually have a higher resale value than phones that are locked.

Can someone please explain to me the unlocking eliminating roaming charges? Do you roaming nationally or internationally?

Sadly it does nothing to eliminate roaming charges other than allowing you to use a foreign SIM card which would charge lower rates locally. For example, when I went to Switzerland I unlocked my Torch and put in a Swiss prepaid card to make much cheaper calls though I did not get any data.
I'll have to keep this all in mind in case I get a chance to visit the UK branch of my company. Do you need to do anything to prevent the phone from trying to get email so it doesn't rack up roaming charges? I'm thinking the data plan is tied to the SIM so it couldn't get out if it wanted to unless I got a prepaid plan with data.

Yes, there is an option under your manage connections...select on mobile network options...and select data = while roaming = off

I thought about that but i need data which is like 45 bucks a month in Peru and Chile. I rarely use voice there, mostly data.
I am on T-Mobile network. I won a (AT&T) BB Torch 9800 and unlocked it to use on my carrier. This being my first time doing this, I had many issues. Unable to tether to my laptop using BB Dsktop Mgr 6, unable to get 3G signal. I am able to use the phone for calling, texting, browser on phone, email. I realize what I have said here may not be what you were inquiring about, but I thought I would share it anyway.
every little bit counts...thanks for the info.

Ive had to Bell Bold 9700s, both unbranded and factory unlocked... no need here when they are already good to go out of the box!
So what makes them factory unlocked? Is that a carrier decision?
I think so MK (as in carrier decision). They dont promote them as unlocked, and all might not be... but mine have been.
