So I keep reading in several posts that you can tethering your BB with Desktop Manager. Is this true? Is this a way to avoid charges for tethering?

Yes, it is true. Here is an article with the steps on how to do so.

Interesting article. I don't have much use to tether but for someone who does it is ideal.

Just be careful, I believe BR had an article a week or so ago about AT&T (maybe other carriers too) sending letters to customers who were tethering without a tethering plan. Apparently they can tell when someone is tethering through various methods, be it the Tether app, through BB DM, or others...and they want their money.

It's not clear yet how they determined who was tethering. If it's based on data usage... just make sure not to go above what you'd use without tethering (look at your data history on the AT&T web site - it will show a clear pattern that you'll want to stick to).
If it's not based on data usage, then the phone is telling AT&T about it in a different way. IN that case, your friend may be out of luck -- he'll be able to do it once, then get the ugly letter from AT&T and need to stop.
It's just so frustrating to me that they can get away with charging an extra $60 a month for me to tehter my phone - and with a LOWER total data cap than I'm getting for $30/mo. It should make no difference where that data gets routed to - as long as I don't exceed my limits. And if I do exceed them, there are mechanisms in place to ensure I pay for it.
If just one carrier came along and started offering decent speeds and free tethering (though still within bandwidth limits) I'd jump the AT&T ship in a heartbeat.
Try out BBSSH - a free SSH and Telnet client designed for your BlackBerry device.

If you're tethering daily and have ditched your home internet provider altogether, that would be one thing but if you use it only for convenience, here and there, I don't see how they would know. Even in months where I tether, I'm still hardly reaching 2gb...haven't got a letter yet.

And yes the carriers can tell...the APNs route traffic differently based on method of access.

I can't wait till I have a wifi playbook I'm so over monthly plans and being tied to a carrier...I'll still keep my cellphone family plan but...geez, bill never gets smaller only stays the same or increases.

They can't make me pay if there is a workaround like this...hmmm

Supposedly one of the threats in the letter is that they will automatically add a tethering plan to your bill. And true, they can't make you pay but what I said was "they want" and they can indeed want their money and they will try and get that money from you.

Good point....ATT does have a policy about adding service packages to your account without permission. Like when you swap sims to a different type of handset...it sends the pairing info over the air and they change your plan accordingly. Pain in the ASS!!
