I was going through the Rogers redboard comments on the new blackberry lineup and I saw in the comments that one of the Rogers reps indicated there was "no such functionality on that device," referring to the 9900
I hope to hell this is wrong or they just don't want to announce it. I was really really hoping for the WIFI hotspot, if only to get increased speeds via tethering to the Playbook.
What say you?
I thought this was already confirmed. Anyway I would put a "must" on any of these phones since we all know we'll be buying QNX phone in about a year :)

It seems to have dropped off altogether, it was hot when it first arrived on the scene in some of the Androids if I recall, there was a lot of talk it could be coming to BlackBerry devices...now, its not? Do you think the carriers are pressuring the device manufacturers to not build it for some reason, maybe because its not enough of a money maker them, or they want to steer customers towards 4G plans (you know it is going to be an additional fee)?? What, AT&T charges $15 a month for that feature I think.
With the carriers putting caps on their data and the easy availability of wi-fi spots (starbucks, blenz, McDonald's etc) I think for some phone manufacturers it would not be the item that is a "must have".
The carriers will make money in any way, however, (I'm going to use Rogers as an example), they would make more money if you buy their rocket stick or wi-fi hub. That way they get additional income from another device/data useage.
I'm not sure if other carriers offer similar items, I think T-Mo might have a mi-fi hub...
There may also be the additional level of security needed if you convert a phone into a wi-fi device... I'm guessing on this. You would need to have some kind of rock solid firewall on it to protect it.
Rim does their encryption via NOCs and I'm not sure what the impact would be if the phone is a wi-fi hot spot...
I achieve pretty good speed already tethering my PB to my BB... If I'm in 3G zone I get 3G speed.
If I'm somewhere with Wi-fi and I've used my PB on it, my PB automatically connects again when I walk into the same place.

you get max 2.1 mpbs
thats the speed of bluetooth.
you get no more speed via bridge as its via bluetooth
you dont get 3g speeds as 3g should get you more speed than that
I think WiFi is needed for all devices. But wont keep me from buying one without it. But it they put it in a curve, how the hell can they not put it in the 9900 or the 9850 series' devices. It's like a Homer Simpson head slap and DOH!
It makes no sense Scueby..... it was in almost all the leaked devices and leaked slides/info over the last 4-6 months.
I really don't care about it other than wanting to increase the speed of tethering with my Playbook.
Bluetooth tethering is OK, but, I would love to be getting 3-5 mpbs at the very least.
I agree, if they put it on the Curve, there is no reason in the world for it not to be on their flagship device. I would definitely love it for increased speed on the bridge. I'm sure there are still a few unreleased features. I'm sure when Verizon finally makes the announcement, they might announce something that has yet to be mentioned.

They'll probably have a commercial that says, 'Our BlackBerry devices have WiFi hotspots, AT&T's doesn't. Cause, to be honest, I miss the carriers fighting through commercials.
The commercial battles were definitely funny.
Huh, didn't realize that the Curve will have wi-fi hot spot... but I still think they didn't put it into the Bolds cuz it may violate BES policy somehow...
Its definitely there in the Bolds. One of the engineers was talking about it on one of the demo videos on crackberry.com.
