I personally recommend Seidio for hard cases. They fit well and are very durable.
I've only really bought the "surface" make, so I can't comment on the rugged, or active one.
The surface case on my torch is incredible. I had a case mate one on and it seemed to amplify the wobble at the bottom of my phone whenever I needed to press the trackpad.
The Seidio fits snug, and actually reduces the wobble. Weird.
I only wish they would provide a screen protector with it.
Otterbox for me :D
Otterbox is definitely tops for all around protection. For a balance of versatility and protection, go with Seidio.
Does it matter based on the model of handset you have? I have a torch and the hard case (do not remember the name) just broke only after two weeks of usage. Now I need to shp for another but do not want the same issue.
Yes. Each case is specific to the handset model.
As for breakage, both Seidio and Otterbox have their issues.
As mentioned, Otterbox is definitely the best in all around protection, as it has a screen protector and inner lining. Unfortunately, it lacks a holster and it adds bulk to the phone.
Seidio's surface (the one I have) adds some protection and keeps the bulk to a minimum. The Active provides similar protection like the Otterbox as it has an inner lining. Both Seidio products have holsters available, but no screen protector.
Otterbox is too much bulk for me, if it reached a point, I'd possibly consider the Impact Series, but I have an Incipio Silicrylic and am very pleased. Maintains the minimalist styling and the hard shell provides just enough protection. The extra protection is nice for at the gym, I can place it in the cup holder in the running machines and not worry about it as I did when using just a silicon shell. Dropped it out of my pocket at work several times, knocked it off my desk once, survived every time. That said, I have a desk job so I don't need the protection that say a car mechanic might require.

Otterbox Commuter here. It adds bulk but it's totally worth it!
