According to engadget, Samsung plans on selling 10 million 3D TV's this year. LG is planning on selling around 5 million. They mention that its unclear whether this sales boost will come due to higher demand or the fact that most new TV's will be 3D enabled.
Either way, I think its quite optimistic. I'm not sold on the 3D TV racket at all. I've tried it out a few times and it does look cool, but the glasses kill it for me; in more ways than one.
They're distracting, clunky and uncomfortable. I realize aesthetics are not important to some, but there's something to be said about comfort and style when you plan on wearing something for 12 hours at a time. (What? Star Wars marathon!)
The glasses are company specific. I think this is ridiculous. This means that if you have a Sony and want to head over to your buddy's house to watch a movie or sports in 3D on his LG, you can't use your own glasses to watch it. I don't understand why there is not a technology standard yet so all glasses work with all TV's. I'm not even close to an expert, but aren't they all active shutter?
The last problem I have with the glasses is the price. I know they are getting cheaper, but if you don't get them online somewhere (saw a Samsung pair on eBay for $100), you're probably going to pay $200-$300 for each pair at the store you buy your TV from. Ouch.
I did come across a very innovative way to watch 3D TV without glasses though. Check out the video here. I predict this will totally revolutionize 3D TV. :)
Seriously though, the technology is out there for 3D without glasses. Ever heard of the Nintendo 3DS? 3D: no glasses. Pay attention Samsung and LG if you want to really sell some 3D TV's.
