			<title>Cadillac Cowboy on "Trouble with Media Icon &#38; Wi-Fi Signal Display in Theme Creation"</title>

			<description>&#60;p&#62;I&#38;#39;m creating my first theme using Research in Motion&#38;#39;s (RIM) new BlackBerry Theme Builder and it&#38;#39;s mostly complete...&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;There are a few little &#38;quot;niggles&#38;quot; that I&#38;#39;m having the hardest time working out though.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Firstly, the wireless networking (&#38;quot;Wi-Fi&#38;quot;) signal strength icon is clearly shown in BlackBerry Theme Builder, along with all the other relevant details (the SSID of the network-in-use and Wi-Fi logo), but when the theme is exported to my device, the Wi-Fi signal strength is simply not shown on any screen!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The SSID of the currently-connected network is shown, as is the Wi-Fi logo, but nowhere does the signal strength show.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;As for the second part of my question, how do I add the &#38;quot;Media&#38;quot; icon to the Zen menu bar?&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I&#38;#39;ve been through the Application List a couple of times and have tried various icons (some of which I have not heard of and/or do not display at all when used on my device, such as &#38;quot;Application Center&#38;quot; and &#38;quot;Files&#38;quot;), but nothing seems to cause the &#38;quot;Media&#38;quot; icon to be added to the top of my Zen menu bar!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The closest I&#38;#39;ve come is the &#38;quot;Music&#38;quot; icon, but I was kinda hoping for the &#38;quot;Media&#38;quot; icon as this provides a short-cut to all three multimedia sections on current versions of BlackBerry OS...

			<description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;img title=&#34;http://www.berryreview.co/aerize_wifix&#34; style=&#34;border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px 0px 5px 10px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px&#34; height=&#34;304&#34; alt=&#34;aerize_wifix&#34; src=&#34;http://static.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/aerize_wifix.png&#34; width=&#34;http://www.berryreview.co/229&#34; align=&#34;right&#34; border=&#34;http://www.berryreview.co/0&#34; /&#62; Aerize let us know about their latest app called WiFiX. It lets you force applications to work over WiFi when it regularly would require a data plan. This means that apps like Google Mobile, Google Maps, BlackBerry Maps, and more can be forced to work over WiFi even if they are not setup to do so.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I can see people who don’t have a data plan using this but I would be interested in hearing how you plan on using it. The app is 50% off for a limited time to $4.99 after which it bumps up to full price. It comes with settings preconfigured for&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;ul&#62;
&#60;li&#62;Google Maps Mobile&#60;/li&#62;
&#60;li&#62;Google Mobile App&#60;/li&#62;
&#60;li&#62;BlackBerry Maps&#60;/li&#62;
&#60;li&#62;Yahoo! Go&#60;/li&#62;
&#60;li&#62;WeatherEye &#60;/li&#62;
&#60;/ul&#62;
&#60;p&#62;There is one caveat it will not work with applications that require secure https/SSL connections. The options are configurable from the general BlackBerry options screen so there is no icon for the app. It comes with a 7 day free trial you can pick up at &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.aerize.com&#34; onclick=&#34;javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.aerize.com');&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;http://www.aerize.com&#60;/a&#62; or from your BlackBerry at &#60;a href=&#34;http://m.aerize.com&#34; onclick=&#34;javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/m.aerize.com');&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;m.aerize.com&#60;/a&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;

They also have a free lite version that lets you &#60;a href=&#34;http://store.berryreview.com/product.asp?id=30837&#38;amp;n=Wifi-File-Transfer-for-Blackberry-Lite&#34;  target=&#34;_blank&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;browse and download files&#60;/a&#62;. &#60;a href=&#34;http://crackberry.com/portaserver-mini-web-server-your-wifi-capable-blackberry&#34; onclick=&#34;javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/crackberry.com');&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;Bla1ze spotted yet another&#60;/a&#62; such app that runs a little &#60;a href=&#34;http://store.berryreview.com/product.asp?id=34023&#38;amp;n=PortaServer---mini-web-server-for-your-WiFi-capable-Blackberry&#34;  target=&#34;_blank&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;web server on your BlackBerry called PortaServer&#60;/a&#62;. It lets you connect to your BlackBerry over Wi-Fi to browse and download files from your BlackBerry. Not much different from the lite version of Wi-Fi File Transfer but options are good!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I just wish some of this sharp developer talent would go towards developing a solid SSH client for BlackBerry…&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;From &#60;/strong&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://store.berryreview.com/product.asp?id=34023&#38;amp;n=PortaServer---mini-web-server-for-your-WiFi-capable-Blackberry&#34;  target=&#34;_blank&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;&#60;strong&#62;the description&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/a&#62;&#60;strong&#62;:&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;PortaServer allows you to use your WiFi capable BlackBerry as a web server, and access its file system from any web browser on the same network. You can view or download pictures, music, videos, documents or web pages directly from your handset over a WiFi connection.   &#60;br /&#62;The web server provides a password to protect your data from random visitors; this password is displayed on the main screen of PortaServer. The password will not, however, protect you from targeted attacks or when using public WiFi networks. We recommend that you only use PortaServer in a secure environment (e.g. your home or office network)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62; &#60;!--more--&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Upon launching, PortaServer displays the URL to connect to your BlackBerry, and the password required to access the device. To use, simply turn on PortaServer, enter the URL it provides into a web browser on another device (computer, PDA, or other), enter the password, and you will be able to browse the phone&#38;#8217;s files. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;PortaServer only supports wifi at this time. Based on our experience testing PortaServer with various browsers, we found Internet Explorer to be less reliable than Firefox when loading large files (e.g. mp3&#38;#8217;s) from PortaServer. This is a free application. We encourage you to send us your comments, suggestions, or complaints, but we can&#38;#8217;t guarantee that you will always receive a response. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;b&#62;Features:&#60;/b&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;ul&#62;
&#60;li&#62;Browse your handset&#38;#8217;s file system using a web browser &#60;/li&#62;
&#60;li&#62;View or download files from your handset over wifi &#60;/li&#62;
&#60;li&#62;Host static web pages, documents and media on your device &#60;/li&#62;
&#60;li&#62;Can run in background while you use other handset functions&#60;/li&#62;

			<title>WiFiCafeSpots on "Data Roaming - WiFi"</title>

			<description>&#60;p&#62;Data Roaming with your BlackBerry can be very expensive when you are traveling abroad.&#60;br /&#62;
But the BlackBerry can be configured to disable Data Roaming and the WiFi capability of the BlackBerry offers a good alternative to get high speed Internet access.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;It is really astonishing how many nice small independent Cafes and Restaurants are offering free WiFi access.&#60;br /&#62;
The new BlackBerry application Free WiFi Cafe Spots makes it easy to find them.&#60;br /&#62;
It lists more than 14,000 Cafes and Restaurants with free WiFi in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The app Free WiFi Cafe Spots stores the locations of the Cafes and Restaurants on your BlackBerry,&#60;br /&#62;
so that you can also find them when you are on the road and do not have an Internet connection.&#60;br /&#62;
You can list all cafes near your current Geo location or select a City / Neighborhood by name or ZIP code.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Note: The app can also be used without internet access and without GPS.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The app Free WiFi Cafe Spots is available on the BerryReview&#60;br /&#62;
 store:&#60;br /&#62;

In case you are not familiar with it VLC is the most powerful and FREE video player for Mac and Windows. It will play practically any video you throw at it though sadly it is not that great with music playlists.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://store.berryreview.com/product.asp?id=33858&#38;amp;n=VLC-Remote-Control-for-BlackBerry&#34;  target=&#34;_blank&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;VLC Remote Control &#60;/a&#62;lets you control your VLC instance from your BlackBerry over your homes Wi-Fi network. I have been playing with the app for a few days and am loving it since I use VLC all the time. The only caveat is that it is only available for the BlackBerry Bold right now but hopefully support for more devices is coming soon!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;It will not replace my trusty &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JJM7S0?ie=UTF8&#38;amp;tag=berryrecom-20&#38;amp;linkCode=as2&#38;amp;camp=1789&#38;amp;creative=390957&#38;amp;creativeASIN=B000JJM7S0&#34; onclick=&#34;javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.amazon.com');&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;Adesso 2.4GHz wireless HTPC keyboard with optical trackball&#60;/a&#62; but it will definitely be useful for pausing Penn &#38;amp; Teller while I am eating breakfast. In true Bold fashion these pics show off a nice pleather back.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The BoyGenius has also &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/07/29/blackberry-8530-headed-to-verizon-totes-wi-fi/&#34; onclick=&#34;javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.boygeniusreport.com');&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;managed to confirm the specs&#60;/a&#62; on an upcoming CDMA variant of the 8520 called the 8530. This device is practically the same with the notable inclusion of Wi-Fi on a CDMA BlackBerry! Other than that it is still missing GPS and a flash.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Thanks to everybody who sent these in!&#60;/p&#62;

Everything from WAP to WAP2 to TCP/IP to BIS to BES to Wi-Fi are just not that simple to describe. Every new BlackBerry developer needs to understand this so their applications can make a reliable connection to the internet. Sadly RIM has yet to provide a comprehensive guide to those not in the BlackBerry Alliance.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;From now on I have a solution. Peter Strange has posted a brilliant thread on the official BlackBerry support forums detailing how BlackBerrys connect to the internet and all the issues a developer must deal with. Its a great starting point an may solve most of your questions.&#60;/p&#62;
