<p>When I <a href="http://crackberry.com/aol-radio-player-now-available-blackberry-bold" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/crackberry.com');" rel="nofollow">read about this new free radio app</a> I held off to see if AOL would add support for more devices or carriers. Turns out that the app will remain for the Bold only on AT&amp;T and only works in the US. Talk about cutting down your target market!</p>
<p><a href="http://static.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/aolmusic1.png" rel="lightbox[]" rel="nofollow"><img title="http://www.berryreview.co/aolmusic1" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="121" alt="aolmusic1" src="http://static.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/aolmusic1_thumb.png" width="http://www.berryreview.co/179" border="http://www.berryreview.co/0" /></a> <a href="http://static.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/aolmusic2.png" rel="lightbox[]" rel="nofollow"><img title="http://www.berryreview.co/aolmusic2" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="121" alt="aolmusic2" src="http://static.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/aolmusic2_thumb.png" width="http://www.berryreview.co/179" border="http://www.berryreview.co/0" /></a> <a href="http://static.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/aolmusic3.png" rel="lightbox[]" rel="nofollow"><img title="http://www.berryreview.co/aolmusic3" style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="121" alt="aolmusic3" src="http://static.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/aolmusic3_thumb.png" width="http://www.berryreview.co/179" border="http://www.berryreview.co/0" /></a> </p>
<p>I happen to be an AT&amp;T Bold user so I gave the app a spin. It works almost exactly like Pandora with limited song skips (I think 5) per hour and the selection of music is pretty good.</p>

<p><strong>From the description:</strong></p>

<p>Slacker let us know that they updated their application for the BlackBerry Storm to improve Battery life. They claim it has been improved to offer up to twice as much battery life when streaming over 3G.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://static.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/slacker.jpg" rel="lightbox[]" rel="nofollow"><img title="http://www.berryreview.co/slacker" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px 10px" height="152" alt="slacker" src="http://static.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/slacker-thumb.jpg" width="http://www.berryreview.co/225" align="right" border="http://www.berryreview.co/0" /></a>Full details:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Improved battery life up to 2x (over previous versions) while streaming (Slacker has seen Storm devices playing up to 9 hours over 3G with this build)</li>
<li>Improved usability enhancements to the interface, including a “Home” button to quickly access the station list</li>
<li>Added ability to toggle the explicit content filter (on/off) from the main menu</li>
<li>Addressed an issue where pausing a song for an extended period of time did not properly resume playback</li>
<li>Addressed an issue where phone calls or message alerts would prevent playback from resuming properly for some listeners</li>
</ul>
<p>No word yet on if this update helps other devices but you never know. I cannot truly imagine how they could optimize an applications battery usage for only one device… but it could be that they will be releasing other builds in the future so that other devices get this improvements.</p>
<p>You can pickup the latest version of Slacker from <a title="http://www.slacker.com/mobile/blackberry/" href="http://www.slacker.com/mobile/blackberry/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.slacker.com');" rel="nofollow">http://www.slacker.com/mobile/blackberry/</a> or this link in the <a href="http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/901" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/appworld.blackberry.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">App World</a>.</p>

I did not want to mention it until I knew what the changes were since it seemed like an insignificant update. Turns out I was wrong.</p>
<p>Version 1.1.0 has some issues with certain devices and even certain cellphone towers <a href="http://forums.crackberry.com/f35/pandora-1-1-1-patch-release-282029/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/forums.crackberry.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">according to Pandora</a>. They were causing hangs and HTTP 502 errors.</p>
<p><strong>Change log:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Fixed HTTP 502 issue (and other networking-related issues such as the &quot;connection closed&quot; problem on the 8350i)</li>
<li>Fixed volume going to &quot;full&quot; after an audio system alert (phone, email, IM) on Storm</li>
<li>For listeners who use the low end of the volume scale, the jump from 3 bars to 4 bars isn&#8217;t as jarring anymore</li>
</ul>
<p>Pick up the update at <a href="http://www.pandora.com" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.pandora.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.pandora.com</a></p>

It is only available for the Storm, Bold, &amp; 8900 and from what I can tell the app lets you listed to one of 35 genre’s of music along with MP3’s you have uploaded to Deezer.</p>
<p><strong>NOTE: The help and about pages are not in English so its hard to tell exactly what is what. If you understand it let me know!</strong></p>

<p>The tricky part is that according to Nobex all local content will remain free. That means that the US, UK, and Canada are one combined local for now and will come free. If you live in France it looks like the French content will be free but you need to pay for a subscription to get the international stations.</p>
<p>The premium version is retailing for <a href="http://store.berryreview.com/product.asp?id=32299&amp;n=Nobex-Radio-Companion" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">$3.99 a month</a> or $19.99 per year (in the App World) which is not terrible but many people have become accustomed to not pay for streaming radio…</p>
<p>You can still pickup the free version at <a href="http://www.nobexrc.com/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.nobexrc.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.nobexrc.com</a></p>
