I'm sure quite a number of the BlackBerry users on this forum have had their BlackBerry unlocked. The main reasons to unlock your BlackBerry have been repeated over and over: avoid roaming fees, increase resale value, use your BB with the carrier of your choice.

I'm interested to know people's stories of why they decided to unlock their BlackBerry and if they've experienced any benefit/downside it. If unlocking your BlackBerry has been helpful to you in anyway, please let us know about it!

A BBC report claims UK teens much prefer BlackBerry over iPhone, probably in huge part to BBM. Apple's iMessage (read: BBM clone) in iOS 5 comes out in Oct/Nov, so the timing of these new BlackBerrhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14397101y phones couldn't come sooner!!!

Read all about it:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14397101

I wonder if U.S. teens could echo the same. Quite likely!

Tashanna let me know that Ascendo has released version 4.5 of their popular DataVault application. This version adds:

Full support for Storm touch screen. Use finger swipe to scroll list, screen tap to select, column re-ordering by tapping on header, column resizing by holding down finger on header and sliding borders left or right.

Implemented double-click to Edit record in DataVault Desktop Tree View.

Support for Firefox version 3.5; auto-fill web forms, save web forms, generate passwords with DataVault Browser Toolbar.

Increased size of item icons and folders, improved buttons, app icon, background image, etc.

The only annoying part is that Ascendo added synchronization over Wi-Fi for the iPhone OS and not for the BlackBerry. A feature like that, or better yet secure OTA sync, would really make me finally switch over to DataVault or SplashID. Especially considering the $29.99+ price tag that all of these secure data storage demand.

Check out DataVault at this link

This utility adds iPhone-like finger flick scrolling to the BlackBerry Storm. They just released version 1.1 which launches the app automatically and now works globally.

From the change log:

No more manual enabling of BerryScroll on every app launch

The ‘Enable/Disable BerryScroll’ menu item now globally turns BerryScroll on/off

Added click through support in lists while in scroll mode (no more double clicking necessary)

Added setting to turn of scroll indicator

Improved flick sensitivity

Improved transition into flick mode

Giveaway details: Bellshare was kind enough to offer 50 free copies to the first readers who head to this link and use coupon code berryreviewbscroll Just enter in the coupon code and you will get your free copy.
If you don’t win a copy you can pick up the app in the store for $4.99.

JasonP let me know that Iusacell has released OS 4.7.0.151 for the 9530. For some reason it is listed under the 9500 but the OS is for the 9530. Definitely worth checking out since this is newer than the 148 out from Verizon.

Kevin was raving about this Air Traffic Control game for the Storm so I decided to check it out yesterday. The game is quite fun and very similar to the iPhone game that is quite popular. The only downside is that the iPhone game is dirt cheap while the Storm version is $4.99 on sale until May 3rd after which it jumps up to $9.99. I guess paying over 5 times as much is just part of owning a BlackBerry…

On the other hand the game is quite addictive and really starts to show off how gaming can be different on the Storm. You need to keep on specifying flight paths for planes coming in so they don’t crash using gestures. It works quite well and had me impressed.

You can find it in the store are this link but sadly there is no free trial. There is a video of the game below which can give you an idea of the game play but is not the same as a free trial.

Slacker let us know that they updated their application for the BlackBerry Storm to improve Battery life. They claim it has been improved to offer up to twice as much battery life when streaming over 3G.

Full details:

Improved battery life up to 2x (over previous versions) while streaming (Slacker has seen Storm devices playing up to 9 hours over 3G with this build)

Improved usability enhancements to the interface, including a “Home” button to quickly access the station list

Added ability to toggle the explicit content filter (on/off) from the main menu

Addressed an issue where pausing a song for an extended period of time did not properly resume playback

Addressed an issue where phone calls or message alerts would prevent playback from resuming properly for some listeners

No word yet on if this update helps other devices but you never know. I cannot truly imagine how they could optimize an applications battery usage for only one device… but it could be that they will be releasing other builds in the future so that other devices get this improvements.

Reversi really brings back memories. I used to play it back in the day on Windows 3.11 when I was really bored. Tafasa let me know that they have released Reversi for the BlackBerry Storm. It is a classic strategy game that is easy to pick up but hard to win.

The game is on sale now for 99 Cents until July 31st after which it goes up to $2.99. All in all a pretty good game for a great price. I am a big fan of strategy games on my BlackBerry since they are easy to pause and continue between meetings or while waiting for my wife at Macy’s. Sadly like all Tafasa games this is Storm only…

From the product description:

Reversi, also known as Othello, is the fun and famous strategy board game that is easy to play, but hard to truly master. Now the game is available on your BlackBerry so you can play everywhere! The game provides 5 different computer difficulty levels to challenge all people regardless of experience or skill. You can also challenge your friends in a 2-player match to see who is the real champion. This fun, animated and graphical game is easy to use and will keep you entertained for hours.

Reversi (aka Othello) Comes to the BlackBerry Storm – 99 Cents!

This is hot since this is the first leak for OS 5.0 for the Storm as far as I know.

The link is coming from the CrackBerry forums by DD214 and is in a RAR file so you will need the free 7-zip program to open it. The password for the RAR file is raysource.

Download @ Megaupload

So what are you waiting for? Keep in mind that this is still buggy and lots of software will not work!

NOTE: Do not install this software if you do not know what you are doing. It may make your BlackBerry FUBAR or just plain angry.
