@ Scubydue... LOL on your shock idea... that probably is good negative training for people incredibly addicted to texting/msging! :D

@ Joe257, I admire your love for your Storm! :) Like I said I loved the concept and was willing to give it a try but it was just too hard for me to grasp. At that point I had a curve with the physical keyboard and the pushing down on the screen was just kinda weird... on a physical keyboard you can hold down a letter and it would capitalize, don't remembered that doing so on the Storm. It definitely doesn't do it on my Virtual Torch keyboard. I'm not even comparing the touch experience on my BB or my PB to an iPod or iPhone. They're completely different. However with the Torch you also have a track pad so scrolling and selecting is super easy. I use the touch pad to scroll unless I need to move through the document really quick then I swipe on the touch screen. I do all my texting/msging on the physical keyboard but all the commands, i.e. send is by touching the screen, I don't have to double click with the touchpad.

All I hope for is that when the QNX phones come out that they will have qwerty keyboard because it would just really suck to type on glass. I can do it on my PB but it's just not the same and I can't get the same speed and accuracy.

I had the 9530 & 9550. 9550 was better. but clicking on screen wasn't my thing. I say build in a shock. that way when you type, your phone shocks you and gives you a full touch experience! :) hehehe. I do prefer keyboards. but the 9850 is intriguing me. And I'll probably bite for it :) Will miss my 9650 when I go though.

PB Forever, well we definitely disagree. While I do respect your opinion, I can tell you that while you may have tried your boss' Storm, but I have been using a Storm for 3 years. SurePress rocks for many reasons:

1. It does not feel like typing on glass! It gives with a nice bit of action, it has feel. It feels real like you're pushing a real physical button, and you really are!

2. Even if it really is glass, a touch will not do it if that same touch is being used to do other things like scrolling verses selecting or activating something.

3. With a PC, I have the concept of single mouse click to select and double click to launch. A single tap on an iPhone or Torch doesn't provide those two options. The Storm's SurePress does!

4. A PC also has scroll bars and other ways to manipulate the screen without touching the screen. With a touchscreen, you need other input options!

I've used a Torch and iPod & iPhone, and I can tell you that they feel weird. I actually own an iPod 3G for music stuff. I don't do any email on it because I hate typing on glass, as many others will echo. The Torch has real physical buttons you have to push (both QWERTY keypad and front pad), but the virtual keyboard just requires a tap. Going between the two is confusing for me, probably because I expect everything to require a push -- somethings do, somethings don't.

On the iPod, if I select a hyperlink and the network is slow, I don't know if it really selected or not so I keep trying. On my Storm, I know when I've pushed the button. I KNOW when I've selected a hyperlink -- I feel it! As a result, I don't have to keep repeating the action: tap, tap, tap...

There are so many examples I can give you! Tap to highlight and press to open. Tap to get the cursor to edit a hyperlinked text, press to go to that site. How does the iPhone edit hyperlinked text?

I'm sure that if the BlackBerry Storm was first to market with their touchscreen ahead of Apple, SurePress would have been a huge hit! Since it came after the iPhone, everyone wanted RIM to build them an iPhone. SurePress was different so they never gave it a chance. People just wanted an iPhone-type device.

BTW, I'm also a fast typist, and my Storm doesn't slow me down. Of course, I'm only using two thumbs, so it will be slower than typing on a qwerty, but not by much!

@Joe257, my boss has/had a Storm and I played with it when he first got it and I'm sorry, I respectfully disagree with you on the Surepress.

While I like the concept of Surepres, the additional push down on the glass seems like an overkill especially if you know you're typing on glass, therefore a touch should do it. I thought I would like it too because it would give me the same tactile feel as a keyboard (or at least the clicky sound) and it was nowhere near the same.

I have a 9800 and previous to that a 9000. I love the physical keyboard of these BBs.

I also have a PB and I love my PB but typing on that (full touch screen) would probably be much like typing on the 9850/9860. I'm thinking that the 9850/9860 could be worse because the keys are smaller... I dunno...

I'm a fast typist and touchscreens just slow me down.

I like the touchscreen to launch apps. It's quick, just tap and away you go... You can set the sensitivity to your touch screen so that even if you touch the icon, the app won't launch unless you tap it harder.

I know I'll probably have to adapt to touchschreen when the QNX phones coming out...

Well the teens in my part of Canada (I'm on the west) are mainly clutching BBs then iPhones altho more BBs then iPhones. No Droids that I can tell through my kid's friends. My older son has a Droid phone, but he uses his phone completely different (i.e. not so much as a messaging device but as an entertainment/phone device).

My younger son had an HTC that didn't survive beyond 9 months same with his first phone which was a Sony... ugh... anyhow he rather go phoneless for months then use his HTC which was how painful it was for him.

I gave him my 9000 when I picked up up 9800 and he's never looked back since. The 9000 finally died (but I had the phone for 2 years already before he took it). When it came time to replace it he stuck with BB (that's my boy!). He said "no way am I getting another phone, I love the keyboard, I love this phone", "I love BBM, all my friends are on it".

I told him that Apple will have iMessage soon. He's got an iPod. And his response was Pffft, whatever.

I think he's response is typical of teens who have started using BBs. I also think for their generation they don't think it strange to carry two pieces of electronic devices if need be. I see so many of them toting around iPods and Blackberries. They have no hang ups on what piece of equipment is better suited to what they want to do.

I forgot to mention that I've written pages of stuff (I remember up to 7 pages in one report) on my Storm with SurePress in just over an hour in a binge. No laptop required, no physical keyboard required. Can I do that with a 9860/9850? I dunno.

It's funny that so so many claim to hate typing on glass, yet the majority of reviewers disliked (and HATED!) the SurePress on the Storms. I think the main reason was that it wasn't like the iPhone. Personally, if I wanted an iPhone, I'd buy an iPhone. I don't want one, and I don't want an iPhone clone either!!!

RIM engineers studied this issue and did something really great! It was really quite ingenious, and it gave full-touch users an experience close to that of a real keyboard. Now, all that great work is lost to the world because of a few haters. RIM was forced to yield to the pressure.

I am also one that hates typing on glass, and the thought of moving to a 9860/9850 without SurePress scares me a bit. Will I miss my old Storm? Hell yeah! I only wish that RIM will see that and create a BlackBerry for folks like me who still like and LOVE SurePress (as much as I don't want them to create more smartphones!).

Nevertheless think about this. The touchpad on these devices is almost necessary! I didn't realize that you cannot select an icon anymore unless you tap and hold! With my Storm, I can select and icon (i.e., an app) and do something with it right away. Now, with BB 7 devices (i.e., no SurePress), if you tap, you launch. You must either tap & hold or use the touchpad to select the icon.

Another issue arises when you are reading stuff. As you scroll, anything with links are often activated taking you off to some site you didn't want to go to. With SurePress, this never happens since you're just scrolling (touching the screen) not activating (pressing the screen in).

For those who haven't tried SurePress, it is a joy to use. It solves the issue of tactile feel when typing, which is sooo important! I agree, it does not solve the issue of your fingers actually touching the keys, but SurePress wins more than half the battle by addressing the more important issue of feel -- feeling that you've pressed the key. You didn't just touch it, you pressed it (i.e., pushed it in).

In my opinion, RIM gave up a great award winning technology because of a lack of understanding by a bunch of RIM haters that saw the world only through Apple's lenses.

I see a pretty good mix of iPhone/Blackberry among my kids and their friends. Our oldest has a Blackberry but the other 2 have iPhones. Some of their friends have iPhones and some have Blackberries. I only think I've seen one with an Android though. I'm not sure yet if the new line of BB phones will sway the younger crowd or not. The full touchscreen might be appealing though.

US teens definitely love to do a lot of messaging, and what is better than a BB keyboard, but they are also swayed by bells and whistles, and no one does a better job with those than Apple.

A BBC report claims UK teens much prefer BlackBerry over iPhone, probably in huge part to BBM. Apple's iMessage (read: BBM clone) in iOS 5 comes out in Oct/Nov, so the timing of these new BlackBerrhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14397101y phones couldn't come sooner!!!

Read all about it:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14397101

I wonder if U.S. teens could echo the same. Quite likely!

I'm sure quite a number of the BlackBerry users on this forum have had their BlackBerry unlocked. The main reasons to unlock your BlackBerry have been repeated over and over: avoid roaming fees, increase resale value, use your BB with the carrier of your choice.

I'm interested to know people's stories of why they decided to unlock their BlackBerry and if they've experienced any benefit/downside it. If unlocking your BlackBerry has been helpful to you in anyway, please let us know about it!

I unlock every device I own for the pure purpose of resale value. You mention on CL or ebay that your phone is unlocked and not only will someone, somewhere pay full price for your now out-of-date BB, buuuuuut the device also goes w/in the 1st 24hrs of posting it! A wonderful tactful way to fuel your BB addiction w/out having to open ur wallet. Make your old BB pay for your new one! Can't get a better deal or stay current on ur phone in any better way! Also, I found learning how to unlock my own device to be a handy and helpful tool, def something to check out if you love to tinker, very easy to do once you get the hang of it too. :) Just be sure you are familiar with software repair in case you make a whoopsie and get the dreaded main screen error! It's fun to play, but only you can fix what u do... Play safe.. That's the Ashley way! ';)
