WOW

While I traditionally think these New Years Eve shows are corny, they draw a HUGE audience.

For Blackberry to be the lead sponsor means they shelled out a lot of money.

Its crazy to think this is just the beginning. We are only 2-3 weeks into the marketing blitz!!!

If they flood the North American market with ads, they have a good chance of maintaining their marketshare

They just confirmed that RIM Asia Pacific Vice President of Government Affairs Gregory Shea will now get an even longer title. His additional role will be China region president. This is along with a new China subsidiary including RIM’s headquarters in Beijing along with Shanghai and Guangzhou.

RIM must really be aiming at that 500+ million subscribers on China Mobile. I wish them luck! Its also some great news after RIM finally settled their certification in Indonesia.

Until now all the apps were limited to Wi-Fi. Apple & Skype immediately responded that they were happy with the announcement and Skype would work over 3G soon!

Now this just makes me go back to when we found out that RIM developed their own Skype client and killed it because it would cut into carriers voice business. They even crippled their own Mobile Voice System to not work over VoiP for that same reason. Now that one of their biggest partners AT&T is cool with it will we finally see it released? I doubt it but one can always hope.

Still when the Skype client for BlackBerry was first released we were unimpressed since it did not do true VoiP. Maybe now Skype will change and update their BlackBerry app too? I know that Agito managed to figure out how to make VoiP calls on a BlackBerry. Maybe somebody else can do the same?

I know one of the major hurdles for VoiP applications is that it is practically impossible to support “full duplex” on a BlackBerry. Full duplex means recording and playing audio simultaneously. There are quite a few hacks in this regard but RIM is not offering much help in terms of code samples and not supporting JSR 180. The most I have ever read from RIM was this short paragraph from Mark Sohm on the developer forums.

The behavior you see here can vary based on the BlackBerry smartphone model due to the fact that it is primarily based on the underlying hardware of the BlackBerry smartphone. Simultaneous playback and recording is possible on some models, however only one codec can be used at the same time. This means that you’d need to record and play back audio using the same format.

You can try and read up on the subject using this forum search but if anybody has found a solid solution let me know!

So RIM… Now That AT&T is Allowing iPhone VoiP Over 3G…

Being an existing T-Mobile customer of 12yrs, T-MOBILE employee of 6, and ATT user for 3yrs I still have this feeling that only bad things will come as result of this... Sure, signal will be improved... But T-Mobile will become another big-business drone... Thoughts? Any1 else pissed about this besides me????

A lot of smart phones coming out nowadays boast front facing cameras, a feature present in some Nokia handsets long present before Apple placed one on their iPhone 4. Whenever I read smartphone reviews nowadays, reviewers are quick to lament the lack of or praise the presence of a front facing camera just because the iPhone has one. I have been wondering for some time now if i'd like to see such a feature on my blackberry. I have some pros and cons but i'd like to hear from you guys as well. What do you think? Do you think RIM smart phones should feature front facing cameras?

One of the things that I think makes the market unique is the uniqueness that each of the major players contributes. Therefore i think one argument for NOT having FFC on RIM smart phones is that eventually all the systems and hardware will look the same and thus making each company less unique.

I could go on and on. Do you guys think the next generation (supposedly QNX) smart phones have front facing cameras. If so why? If not, why?

RIM was the originator of the greates messneger app ever(iphone could have a million app but people still own a blackberry just to have BBM.
This app comes preloaded on every BlackBerry you buy. Lets not get it twisted now. BBM is BBM and no one can ever match that. Not KIK or others like LiveProfile.

So all my BBM friends download Live Profile and all sent me a request to download it. ???? Why? I have no clue. I mean its suppose to be for those that have other phones such as iphone or Android.

But we all have a blackberry. ?
They all sent this amongst themselves, it doesnt seem logical, especially when RIM already provides the best messeneger you can have. Ture you can't sent messages to your iphone or Android friends yet, but come on LiveProfile is a good alternative for now for people that have alot of friends on other platforms. I downloaded it and tried to use it all day yesterday. Yes its true LiveProfile does have alot of potential. But why are most blackberry users using it over BBM with BBM friends?

We as BBMers dont need this app for ourselves, its to communicate to those that dont have the BBM not for those that do.

I am not trying to hate on LiveProfile.
But you know when you have the Iphone fan boy's sounding off cus "Android" or "RIM" are trying to be like Apple.

Its always been said that every one copies Apple for their stuff, such as the "touch screen phones", "apps", "the ipad".

Well guess what all of you who think oh i can use LivePofile or KIK on my iphone and be just like RIM. YOU CANT! why beacuse BBM is the one and only. Its RIM's best creations. If no other company can be "like Apple" and all of their wonders, then guess what Apple! you cant ever match RIM and their BBM marvel!

LiveProfile good attempt and great app.
BBMers get back to BBM and use LiveProfile for only those that cant have the beauty of the real thing. BBM

BBM rules!

Ronen Halevy on "RIM Reveals Browser Certificate Vulnerability"

Al spotted this latest security advisory from RIM about their browser. Turns out that most of the official BlackBerry OS versions out there are susceptible to a browser certificate issue where NULL characters in the certificate can fool users into thinking they are on a trusted website.

From RIM’s Advisory:

RIM recommends that BlackBerry device users exercise caution when clicking on links that they receive in email or SMS messages. If a user visits a site that causes a BlackBerry Browser dialog box to warn the user about continuing the connection, the user should select Close connection.

Essentially a malicious hacker could send you a link to a website that has a certificate altered with hidden null characters. The phishing style attack can then send you an email and correctly popup a message saying that the certificate’s Common Name field does not match. The problem is that it wont show the null characters so it will look like the message to the right. Make sure to CLOSE THIS CONNECTION!

Sadly it looks like RIM is yet again playing the carrier waiting game and letting carriers approve the patched OS versions before releasing them. I guess RIM has yet to find a solution for Zero Day vulnerabilities that may arise in the future…

the table below lists the versions you need to have to no longer be susceptible to such a bug. Notice how AT&T is still on Bold OS 4.6.0.297… while version .303 is the patched version.

He let me know that there is a new RIM contest on BrickFish (no idea what that is) which is offering some cool prizes for you sending in you BlackBerry Storm story.

You are supposed to share you Storm smartphone story and as more people read it and vote for it your chances of winning increases. Prizes include your choice of a 3 night trip in NYC, a CES VIP experience in Vegas, or $7100 in cash. Pretty cool stuff. Some of the submissions are pretty funny!

To further this effort they have announced their first ever developer webinar on September 10th, 2009 from 2pm until 3pm (EST). The nice part is that the webinar is not limited to Alliance members only.

The focus of the webinar will be web development for the BlackBerry platform. This will cover features of the plug-in for Eclipse and the plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio, and how you can use these toolkits to preview, debug and optimize your BlackBerry web applications. They will also be answering questions at the end of the free webinar.

Personally I am still using Dreamweaver to develop for the BlackBerry browser and am curious to see what the fuss is about these two new plug-ins. This should hopefully be the first webinar of many leading up to and after the BlackBerry developers forum. Here is to hoping they will be explaining their purchase of Torch Mobile and their WebKit developers during the webinar!

You can read more about it at this page and register free at this link.

Recently I cant help but have mixed feelings about device App Stores run by manufacturers. Back in the day when there were no App Stores any developer could release their own application without having to be accepted or modify their applications for the platform. For example, anybody could write up some code and offer it or sell it for Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, & more.

Nowadays I can’t go a day without hearing about some crazy story about App Stores. My favorite this week is Apple’s rejection of a chess game with built in chat because Apple thinks they have trademarked glossy chat buttons!

Its not promising when innovative first time BlackBerry developers like Screaming Toaster go on a rant about how BlackBerry development is totally toxic. (His words not mine) I know that RIM has a whole team that is working hard to help and entice developers along with their new Developer Conference but I think they have a long road ahead.

Here is a perfect example. Yesterday Prosanta posted this great article on the brand new BlackBerry Developer’s Blog about using AJAX in the BlackBerry browser. This is a really cool idea and could lead to web apps kind of like we see on the iPhone. The only problem is that AJAX requires JavaScript which is DISABLED BY DEFAULT on all devices currently sold as far as I have seen! The Browser in OS 5.0 is supposed to fix this but from what I am seeing it is not that much of a JavaScript improvement in the beta OS’s. So in short this great feature that would allow for Web 2.0 applications will not be used by developers for at least a year or two until a majority of users are on OS 5.0+.

The App World is yet another example of this. RIM is pushing the App World to developers to help users discover and install applications. The sad part is that the App World is not installed by default on ANY new BlackBerry which almost defeats the purpose. I have run into over 5 first time BlackBerry users this week and not one of them had App World installed.

So are there any developers out there who want to follow in the footsteps of Screaming Toaster and Versatile Monkey and share their experiences? I am curious if things are improving fast enough especially with RIM’s efforts to release tools such as a developer bug tracker, forum, & blog along with their developers conference and Eclipse/Visual Studio plugins.

In my opinion app development and innovation is where the future stands in terms of cool new applications that change how we use our BlackBerrys. It is sad that until this day very few developers can make a quality app that even holds a candle to apps created by RIM internally. (and this is not due to lack of talent)

This is either a fluke or RIM has some serious marketing geniuses working for them. Fellow writer Remzi spotted this BlackBerry advertisement on Microsoft’s MyPhone Beta Windows Mobile backup website. I always knew there was a reason advertising companies allowed for competitive ad filters but somebody at Microsoft has to be kicking themselves for letting this through. Its not like Verizon or AT&T issued the ad. This one is straight from RIM!

I wonder if this ad has led to any BlackBerry converts from Windows Mobile. I can see a user logging in after their Windows Mobile phone crashes (yet again) and deciding to convert.

FINALLY! RIM just let us know that the BlackBerry App World Catalog is now available online from your desktop! You can find it at http://www.blackberry.com/appworld.

The catalog gives you access to all the apps along with browsing featured items, top downloads, categories or subcategories, as well as searching for applications by name, "free," "paid," or "new."

The catalog includes the description, pricing, size of download, screenshots and reviews. You can also see what device and carrier restrictions exist. You can then provide your email address and a URL will be sent to your BlackBerry which you can click on and automatically fire up the App World to that app.

I think this feature should have been available when App World launched but better late then never! The best part is that we can now finally link to apps that are only available in the App World.

Let us know what you find!
