Hi Everyone,

I just made TinyController, an app to control your BlackBerry from your Desktop (Windows or Mac). I know there are already several apps that can do what TinyController can do, so what makes it better than other softwares?

It can use USB, WIFI, and Bluetooth connection (Other software usually can only do one or two connection methods, only the expensive softwares can do all)

The USB connection works in Windows and Mac while other apps only support USB connection in Windows. If you have tried other apps, you will see that USB speed gives the best experience. Note that you need BlackBerry Desktop Software to be able to use USB connection.

If the connection is too slow (for example you are using WIFI connection with very low signal strength), you can type in an entire text to be sent to your BlackBerry, you can also adjust the image quality.

The price is reasonable 9.99 USD (I hope it is reasonable, much lower than other competitors that can do USB connection).

The license is per device, it means that you can register your device and use it from your Desktop, Laptop (Mac and Windows).

Please note, just like other apps, some BlackBerry software can not be controlled from your Desktop (such as BBM Group chat). So please try it first and see if it fits your need.

You can try this software for free for 14 days, just go to:

TinyController

and download the mobile and desktop part. I am planning to release this software in appworld once it is approved.

A little bit about me: I've written several freeware apps for Blackberry (7 in total), you can see the list here: Applications for Blackberry. This is my first commercial app for BlackBerry so I am open for any criticism and suggestion.

I remember hearing about this product awhile back but I then realized we have never actually mentioned it on BerryReview. Greg & Remzi also let me know that it has been improved in recent versions to make the app more responsive. viaDock lets you control your BlackBerry from your PC whether it is a Mac or Windows machine.

The $39.99 price tag is pretty pricey but there are no real competitors other than the $99/year Bayalink Liberty since Rove Mobile stupidly took their free viewer off the market. This might be the closest you get to having BlackBerry messenger on your PC without RIM releasing a client.

The app easily connects over Bluetooth & USB and gives you access to quite a few functions:

Create a fully integrated environment: Use your PC and BlackBerry applications through one single system when at the office, home or anywhere you use a PC.

Connect quickly and easily: Connect via Bluetooth or USB to your desktop or notebook PC.

Share clipboards: Easily copy and paste text between your PC and BlackBerry applications.

Quickly switch between BlackBerry applications: Use the application launcher or menu shortcuts to start using any application running on your BlackBerry.

Dial and receive phone calls: Use on-screen phone controls to quickly make and answer phone calls, enable and disable hands-free talking and turn on and off mute.

Know who is calling: Get instant notification of incoming calls while using viaDock, or through mini view when using other applications.

Monitor your BlackBerry status: Always know your battery and radio signal strengths at a glance.

I am really digging the little dock that tells you who is calling and lets you take a call using your PC. This app is definitely not for everybody but the idea is really cool! They still have some bugs in the app like the numbers do not work right on the Storm but it is worth giving it a spin if you are interested.

Check it out on Impatica’s website at this link. They even have a version for car dash docking stations which would let you use your BlackBerry with a big touchscreen.

Impatica viaDock – Control Your BlackBerry from your PC or Mac

Ronen Halevy on "Poll Results: Are You a Mac OSX or a Windows PC User?"

A little over a week ago we ran a poll asking all of you what operating system you use the most. I was curious how many people would actually be impacted by RIM releasing desktop manager for Mac. I know I have been dying to get my hands on a copy but am worried that it will not let me install another carriers OS easily…

The results of our poll were kind of odd as you can see below:

The 45% of voters that chose Mac does not jive well with me so I decided to do a bit of digging. I ran a report with a breakdown of OS’s that visitors to BerryReview have been using:

That 10% figure seems quite a bit more plausible since that is only slightly higher than Apple’s market share. Still the poll just goes to show that there are quite a few Mac users just dying to get their hands on desktop manager for Mac!

Poll Results: Are You a Mac OSX or a Windows PC User?

My wife purchased a aluminum Macbook for me last year as a anniversary gift (much appreciated) and I have only plugged my BlackBerry into it once. It was a suitable replacement for my trusted Lenovo x61t until I tried upgrading my Bold’s OS once with Parallels and VMware Fusion. Parallels would not work and Fusion caused a kernel panic in the middle of the upgrade bricking my device and making more work that it was worth.

Until now I have always been using my desktop PC to connect my BlackBerry when I need to but I would love to be able to use my Mac. I am no diehard Mac lover (far from it) but the comparable Lenovo laptop I wanted (ThinkPad X200) cost more than the Macbook.

So I am curious. What is the reader breakdown between Mac and PC users…

PS: Before all the alternative OS users get on my case I did not mention Linux/UNIX/etc since I doubt RIM will ever support them but who knows… I use Linux quite often and OSX is essentially just a GUI for FreeBSD.
