Good morning,

The Enhanced Gmail Plug-In is not working properly on my Bold 9700. BB updated a whole bunch of software on when I plugged it into my computer on Sunday morning and since then the plug-in hasn't shown any emails; the app icon on the home screen will show a * indicating a new message is present, but when I enter the app it tells me "No messages." I've tried deleting my email account from the phone and reconfiguring it with no success, so I now have to read my emails through the main Messages screen where they're mixed in with texts and Google Talk/BBM conversations, which is rather annoying.

I've also attempted to re-install the plug-in on the BB by going to http://www.blackberry.com/gmail and received error message "907 Invalid COD" when I attempted to download the plug-in. (I can't try downloading/installing through a computer until I get home after work since this is my personal device.) The version of the plugin available is 2.0.0.25; for what it's worth, the OS I have on my 9700 is v5.0.0.405.

I stopped by my local AT&T Store last night and they said that another customer had been in complaining of being unable to *send* email through the plug-in, although they were able to receive messages. The opinion of the store manager was that this issue was related to the outages RIM suffered last week.

I'd appreciate any guidance from others on what might have caused this and how I can get the plug-in working correctly.

Thank you,
-Dave
RIM ran an article in the latest edition about the Gmail Plugin that was released weeks ago and threw in a little paragraph that was actually newsworthy:

Initially, synchronization with the Gmail webmail client is only in the smartphone-to-webmail direction, meaning that changes made to messages (such as adding or editing a label) using the web client will not be reflected on the handheld, but two-way synchronization is expected to be implemented in the near future.

I can’t wait! Hopefully this will not be limited with the Gmail Plugin single email folder <strike>asinine</strike> restriction. I guess RIM realized that being able to filter, sort, and use tags on your BlackBerry loses much of its usefulness if it is not in sync with your desktop account.

RIM Confirms That Gmail 2-Way Sync Coming in “Near Future”

This past Friday we posted the details on the upcoming BIS 2.8 features and within hours had an abuse email from RIM’s <strike>brilliant</strike> commercial legal counsel, Jordan Vaeth, claiming that the disclosure of such information was causing irreparable harm to RIM. RIM has now reversed course and less than 24 hours later they released the documentation themselves (causing incalculable harm) with all the features on their own website with no fanfare.

So now that we are allowed to talk about it again. The features are:

Google Contact Synchronization: If subscribers integrate a Google Mail™ account with their BlackBerry® Internet Service account, they can synchronize contacts between the account and the contacts application on their BlackBerry device. Subscribers can add, change, and delete Google Mail contacts from their device or from their Google Mail account and the BlackBerry Internet Service synchronizes the changes.

Enhancements to email setup and settings: Automatic Login now supports most billing identifiers, which allows new subscribers with wireless service providers that use PIN, IMEI, or ESN as a billing identifier to create BlackBerry Internet Service accounts from the BlackBerry smartphone, without having to create a login user name and password

Note: This feature will be available approximately one week after the BlackBerry Internet Service upgrade.

Windows Live™ Hotmail® revalidation: With BlackBerry Internet Service 2.8, new Windows Live Hotmail mail integrations will be defaulted to a protocol that is designed so as not to require 90 day reauthorization.

Note: Existing BlackBerry smartphone users accessing Windows Live Hotmail using Microsoft® MSP will still be required to revalidate their Windows Live Hotmail account every 90 days.

RIM could learn a thing or two from Google in terms of coping up to their outages. We mentioned the major outage that Gmail had yesterday which even threatened to take down Twitter with the barrage of users asking if it was just them. Google even has a specific page where they were posting updates throughout the whole outage detailing and confirming the outage.

This is what I call good communication. It sucks that Gmail was down due to what Google is now calling a “slightly underestimated load” during a routine server upgrade. You can read their explanation after the jump.

I just cannot help but compare how Google handled this compared to the many BlackBerry outages we have had over the years where RIM leaves us users in the dark wondering what the hell has happened. We have to resort to mailing lists like DataOutages to confirm these outages which RIM only reports to their big customers. It is just another case of how RIM caters to carriers and big customers and puts regular consumers second in line. What do you think?

Here’s what happened: This morning (Pacific Time) we took a small fraction of Gmail’s servers offline to perform routine upgrades. This isn’t in itself a problem — we do this all the time, and Gmail’s web interface runs in many locations and just sends traffic to other locations when one is offline.
However, as we now know, we had slightly underestimated the load which some recent changes (ironically, some designed to improve service availability) placed on the request routers — servers which direct web queries to the appropriate Gmail server for response. At about 12:30 pm Pacific a few of the request routers became overloaded and in effect told the rest of the system "stop sending us traffic, we’re too slow!". This transferred the load onto the remaining request routers, causing a few more of them to also become overloaded, and within minutes nearly all of the request routers were overloaded. As a result, people couldn’t access Gmail via the web interface because their requests couldn’t be routed to a Gmail server. IMAP/POP access and mail processing continued to work normally because these requests don’t use the same routers.
The Gmail engineering team was alerted to the failures within seconds (we take monitoring very seriously). After establishing that the core problem was insufficient available capacity, the team brought a LOT of additional request routers online (flexible capacity is one of the advantages of Google’s architecture), distributed the traffic across the request routers, and the Gmail web interface came back online.

Google Explains & Apologizes for Gmail Outage

Users everywhere are staring at empty screens and trying to see if the world has come crashing down. Gmail and Google Apps Mail are all down from the web interface after hours of sporadic issues all day.

Check out the Google Apps dashboard for up to the minute reports from Google about the status of their efforts to fix this issue.
Looks like there will be one long coffee break going on now… This just makes you realize how much you rely on Google.

NOTE: So far reports are saying that IMAP and POP3 are still working so that’s you best bet for now!

I have been waiting to hear this for a long time. Josep let me know about a thread on BlackBerryForum(de) where detailed leaked about an upcoming Enhanced Gmail Plugin. This plugin is rumored to add Gmail specific functions on your BlackBerry including:

See your Gmail based emails in Conversation View for simple topic management

Add and remove labels and stars to emails to keep inbox organized

Archive and report as spam actions for mailbox management on the go

Search your entire Gmail inbox

You can try an get in on the RIM beta program but I doubt many will get in. It looks like both RIM and non-RIM employees are testing this out. I CAN’T WAIT!!!

I just wish I could read more of what is going on in that thread. They are even linking to BerryReview for some reason. It looks like BIS 2.7 is required for this to work.
