I'm sure quite a number of the BlackBerry users on this forum have had their BlackBerry unlocked. The main reasons to unlock your BlackBerry have been repeated over and over: avoid roaming fees, increase resale value, use your BB with the carrier of your choice.

I'm interested to know people's stories of why they decided to unlock their BlackBerry and if they've experienced any benefit/downside it. If unlocking your BlackBerry has been helpful to you in anyway, please let us know about it!

Hi,

I seem to have killed my Bold screen.

I tried to change my bezel to a really nice matt black one, following the ebizworld guide on youtube. I'l normally really good with this kind of thing (Im a computer technician and have chipped Xbox's, PS etc in my past).

When Ive re-assembled my Bold and turned the device back on my screen lights up, but is all muddled up, the device seems to still work, I pressed my camera shortcut and took a picture, but the screen just seems screwed.

I have made sure the screen is connected + made a call from the phone and it all works fine, the screen is just mainly white and sometimes shows my wallpaper but it's all muddled up.

Any ideas people?

N8D let me know in the comments that he followed up on his BlackBerry 8520 disassembly video with another useful video. In his latest he compares the form factors of the BlackBerry 8520 vs 8900 vs 9000 vs 9530 vs 9630 vs 8330. Its a pretty good overview if you just want to see how the devices have evolved over the years especially since you cannot walk into one store and compare them all side by side. Its also cool to see how the Curve go from the 8330 to 8900 to 8520…

This latest build is 5.0.0.93 compared to the previous .90. Not sure yet what is new in this version but I highly recommend not installing this unless you know what you are doing. OS 5.0 has compatibility problems with many applications.

The Tour upgrade makes sense since it is incremental and I hope it helps users with the annoying trackball issues but that may be a hardware issue.

NOTE: It looks like the 4.6.0.508 for the Bold is just the package version and not the app version in my opinion. My guess is it will probably be OS 4.6.0.282 or .291 in the app version.

The upgrade for AT&T is rumored to be coming August 25th and bring:

AT&T Visual Voicemail (optional feature)

General handset software optimization and improvements

Capability to set the device to "2G only" for better battery life and coverage in some international roaming situations

Additional VPLs including My-Cast Weather, Wiki Mobile, Mobile Banking, a few games and more.

Now I am only curious as to how much AT&T will try to charge for Visual Voicemail. Anybody want to place some gentleman bets? My guess is $9.95/month for something YouMail will do for free.
