They have just released version 1.5 and have dropped the beta tag. The new version has quite a few promising improvements such as:

Server upgrades (make v1.5 15% faster than Beta3)

Cache support that enables directly browsing back to a previously visited page

Download manager that downloads files directly within BOLT on JSR 75 capable devices

Dedicated search bar, enabling search on popular search engines directly from BOLT

Enhanced column width control that auto-aligns the text to columns for ease of reading

Enhanced video support that includes inline media playing capability even on low-end devices.

Support for streaming videos of any length

Volume UP/DOWN controls in the inline media player

Ability to rearrange the subscribed feeds using the ‘grab’ feature

Access to History links from the URL window with inline editing OFF

One click access on Home Page that ensures the cursor jumps to the desired widget

You can pick up the new version at http://www.boltbrowser.com.

The new widget SDK will let developers create widgets for OS 5.0 BlackBerrys and are kind of like web applications. This gives web developers access to BlackBerry API’s that used to be only accessible through Java apps.

The widgets use the BlackBerry browser and standards like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create a mini application kind of like Gmail’s interface. This could let developers make use of the push features on the BlackBerry to let widgets alert you about news in the background.

The API’s let developers access internal apps like the calendar or email applications or even letting you play media or edit files. In short it will be pretty cool! The widgets will also support Gears, SQLite and the new BlackBerry Widgets API. The widgets can then be installed OTA, through the App World, or pushed out through a BES.

Sadly it looks like even widgets will be subjected to the annoying code signing keys required of Java apps… On the other hand the wealth of documentation provided for this beta is AWESOME!

You can read more about widgets and download the SDK at this link
http://www.blackberry.com/developers/widget

Ronen Halevy on "Opera Mini Beta 5 Keyboard Shortcuts"

Opera Mini Beta 5 came out last week and really impressed me with its updates. Personally I hate how it takes over as your default browser and does not let you change that option (along with many other small gripes) but I know that millions of BlackBerry users are big fans. Especially since Opera Mini is the only browser on the BlackBerry that does not die when you run JavaScript websites.

The latest beta 5 version is a huge improvement over previous versions but the controls are a bit wonky and non-standard. For example, you cannot hit the back button to exit out of the application. Still its pretty useful to know the keyboard shortcuts to easily speed through the application. It turns out that the all knowing Al Sacco is a big fan of Opera Mini and managed to ferret out some pretty useful shortcuts.

The basics:

2 = Page Up

8 = Page Down

4 = Page Left

6 = Page Right

5= Zoom In/Out

The letter "Q" is the main Opera Mini 5 "shortcut key." Various numeral keys can be pressed along with the letter "Q" to activate browsing shortcuts. For instance:

Q + 1: Clear Page of Cursor, Selection Box

Q + 2: Show Blank URL Field to Navigate to New Page

Q + 3: Search for Specific Text on a Page

Q + 4: Access "Speed-Dial" Home Screen

Q + 5: View of Add to Bookmarks

Q + 6: View Browsing History

Q + 8: Access Browser Settings

Q + 9: View or Add to Saved Web pages

So what other shortcuts have you noticed? If you don’t already have it you can pick it up at m.operamini.com/next

Opera Mini Beta 5 Keyboard Shortcuts

We mentioned TripIt over a year ago as a competitor to WorldMate Live for importing and managing your itinerary on your BlackBerry. They currently only have a mobile website which is decent but they just announced that they are beta testing a full BlackBerry application. They are also looking for beta testers if you are interested.

The interesting part is that TripIt plans on remaining free so that is one less worry. I am not sure how they will be making their money but I am guessing up-selling will be involved.

Let us know if you get into the beta testing group!

Cost: $19.99 with 90 day trial

I was excited to see mention of a calling card application that supports Google Voice (GV). CardKaller has instructions on how to set up the app for use with GV, and they worked great when I tried it out.

Main Menu

They are currently running an open beta test of the app until March 31st. Those who provide comments will receive a free unlocked copy of the app.

There is currently only a Desktop Manager install file, but an OTA link is expected shortly.

The GUI is nice, and probably works fine on non-Storm devices. As the Storm is all I had to work with, I did notice a few problems. First of all, you have to disable Compatibility Mode. Second, I found it difficult to hit the Next and Back buttons on the Storm. They don’t highlight when you scroll over them with your finger, so it is difficult to see what you are selecting. I had the same problem when selecting the calling card to use.

Calling Card setup

Third is really a preference, and other testers have mentioned it as well: you still have to select the card when only one card exists.

Dial from Contacts

Select Contact #

Select Calling Card

I have provided these and other comments to the developers, and they seem very receptive. I look forward to testing further refined versions.

As I mentioned, I haven’t tested this on the trackball devices, but I would imagine the navigation is excellent.

Although I have not used other Calling Card apps, you can check out a link on the CardKaller website to comparison on BlackBerryForums.com between CardKaller and BerryDialer.

Overall, I really like this app, and give it a rating of 9/10.
Review: CardKaller – “the calling card manager and Google Voice dialer for BlackBerry”
