Desktop Manager 5.0.0.8 made a pretty splash when the BlackBerry Tour was released. I got quite a few emails these past few days that RIM has been pushing out Desktop Manager 5.0.0.11 as an automatic update. Until now I just assumed it was a bug fix but did not know what it fixed exactly so I did not mention it.

Tom and a few other readers sent in tips pointing to the fact that this version fixes some of the database backup errors causing problems in 5.0. For example when doing a backup, instead of failing when there is an error, it will now tell you what database failed and offer to continue and complete the backup. Now that is worth mentioning!

You can pickup 5.0.0.8 directly now or through Verizon (use any number) and then check for updates to get this version.

As I always tell users who are on BIS accounts: You MUST backup your device!!! A colleague came to me last week asking if there was any way to recover information from a wiped BlackBerry. I promptly replied that it was not possible and asked him what happened. Turns out that somebody maliciously tried to break into his password protected BlackBerry. After entering in the password incorrectly 10 times the device wiped itself and all of his precious information.

This “Feature” is by design and there is no way to turn it off. Your device will wipe itself after a incorrect password is entered 10 times. RIM even implemented a safety feature recently so that after the fifth incorrect password you need to enter in the word BlackBerry for subsequent attempts. This at least prevents your phone from being wiped by your kids playing with it.

Still it opens your information to being wiped at any time in the hands of a malicious user. It could even be a truly cruel April fools joke. So I remind you all! Make sure to backup your device! Or at the very least subscribe to a service like SmrtGuard to backup your critical information to their servers.

Personally I am waiting for RIM or some other developer to create an application that would lock down or password protect only certain parts of the device. For example, I don’t want anybody who has access to my device to be able to wipe it. Or also offer a lower security option where instead of wiping your device it would just lock it for 30 minutes or a set time limit. I can only imagine how pissed it would make me if entering in a wrong password on my laptop would wipe my laptop by default! BES administrators could always raise this limit for sensitive devices. For now another option is to just put your device in standby which does not offer any security other than locking your keyboard.
Cruel Reality – Even With A Password Your Phone Can Be Wiped!

This new version brings a few important updates to the table including:

More Robust Remote Wiping that wipes out Password Word Keeper, Facebook, Phone Application

Backup and Restore secured by Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption

Easy and secured activation verification process with secure key exchange mechanism via HTTPS.

Added support for User1, User2, User4, User4, Birthday, and Anniversary fields in Contact backup and restore.

Other bug fixes and improvements.

Note: Since June SmrtGuard has also added phone support at: +1-732-579-3649 (M-F 11:00 AM to 7:00PM EST) which is unusually generous for a mobile developer.

If you already subscribe to SmrtGuard you can pick up the update OTA at this link. Otherwise you can pick up a subscription in the store at this link.

So I’m sure we’ve all misplaced our BlackBerry’s at some point, I imagine you all get that horrible gut feeling, thinking you’ve lost your entire handheld life, whether you’ve misplaced it around the house or you know it’s been stolen, you wake up with that sinking feeling that just doesn’t go away. A few month ago I had my phone stolen out of my back pocket in a nightclub and vowed ever since to get some kind of anti-theft software to at least try and get my device back if it ever happened again.

After looking around at some options I seen the price of SmrtGuard and initially wasn’t happy to pay that, then I thought about the price of my handset, I own a 9000 Bold and don’t currently have handset insurance from my network provider. That means if I lose my handset I have to pay for a new one for myself (£400 or so if I buy one from eBay).

Introducing SmrtGuard (pronounced Smart Guard), Your self-proclaimed “Smartphone Guardian”, and it is!

So let’s get onto the features of SmrtGuard.

You open the app from an icon on your menu, you’re then given 4 Submenus:

Backup (Gives you automatic Backup Options)

You can set the frequency of your backup, what you want to backup, and even set it for a specific time of day, as you can see I’ve set mine to backup every day at 4am (normally when I’m asleep and just before a scheduled QuickPull).

Restore (Gives you an option to restore anything that you’ve backed up – this is good if you’ve got your phone back from whoever took it)

SmrtGuard automatically restores everything to your phone that you have backed up

The other two options are pretty straight forward, The Your Data screen simply gives you an idea of what you have on your device at that present moment, and tells you when your automatic backup is scheduled.

The final option turns on and off SmrtGuards FollowMe feature (explained later).

Unlike other Anti-theft software SmrtGuard supplies you with a login for SmrtGuard.com (which can be accessed from another phone or your home computer), this is your remote Dashboard.

From here, you get your remote options:

Track (Start and Stop): This option allows you to continuously track your BlackBerry if you have turned on the Follow Me feature, you can track your phone either in vehicle or on foot)

Self Destruct: This is a really good option if you know you have sensitive information on your device, it will remotely clear EVERYTHING from your device, meaning your texts, contacts, memos, and even everything from your memory card, I personally wouldn’t use this feature, as I don’t have any sensitive info on here, but for the person who keeps bank details, or those pictures you want nobody to see, it really is great. Self Destruct TEST just sends a message to your phone which appears on screen and tells you that it is a test.

Remote listen: Another really great feature, this will make your phone call a number.

From there, your phone will call a number as if you had dialed the number on the device, this is good if you want to remotely listen to the surroundings or listen to your thieves, very sneaky!

Locate my BB: This works in a similar way to Track My BB, but instead of continuously tracking your device it will just send a single location.

Audio Ping: I’m one of those people who leaves their phone around their house, I put it down on a counter top and walk away, then leave it. This is perfect for me, When you press audio ping, a few seconds later your LED on your phone will flash blue and you will hear a very annoying noise coming from your phone. This is also a good feature if you know the vicinity of your phone (if your robber is in a public place), and want to find out who has it. Even if the phone is in its holster, it will still flash and a noise will still go off loudly.

Lock Device: This feature remotely locks your device.

Also from the Dashboard, you can view all of the things that you have backed up.

As you can see, it gives you all of the info that you have on that contact, including pictures. It also has the option to export as CSV, XML or to delete all of the contacts you have backed up.

With SmrtGuard you also get two additional features SIMGuardian and PersonalGuardian.

SIMGuardian: SIMGuardian tells you when another SIMCard has been put in your phone, and notifies you by email.

PersonalGuardian: as you can see above, once you’ve put details of a loved one into the appropriate boxes it will notify that person that you’re in trouble by EMAIL, CALL or SMS. I was unable to get this feature to work so that is one bad point about the program.

Pros:

Very Simple UI

Remote Tracking + Backup

Having your information always backed up online

3 Different subscription options (Monthly, Bi-Yearly and Yearly)

Cons:

Price (although I really do think it is worth it)

PersonalGuardian not working for me. (this is an OS Issue – newer OS have an App popup when u hold menu key, SmrtGuard are currently trying to find a solution)

Conclusion: I really like SmrtGuard for BlackBerry. I think it is the best program out for the job that it does and although it is one of the most expensive I really feel, after using it that it is worth every penny. I haven’t had the chance to fully test it in reality, but I’m completely sure that if I was to lose my device, I’d be able to find where it was, with its automatic OTA backup of everything on your phone I feel that it it’s the best you can get. Head over the BerryReview store here and pick up your subscription today. If PersonalGuardian worked okay for me and the price was a little lower, it would have been a 10/10.
Review: SmrtGuard for BlackBerry

The fact that a developer has finally decided on creating an app to backup to a SD card or the fact that S4BB is actually working on a cutting edge app. John from S4BB let me know about a new EARLY beta they are working on of an app called DataBackup.

I have been asking RIM and 3rd party devs for years to make an application that would let me backup critical information to my SD card. SmrtGuard made a few steps in this direction but the backup and restore options seemed secondary to their anti-theft focus. I used to be able to do this on my old Palm and Symbian devices without breaking a sweat but it was impossible on a BlackBerry..

Looks like the impossible will (hopefully) soon become possible. So far S4BB’s DataBackup app only lets you backup & restore contacts from your SD card but it is a step in the right direction. This is version 0.0.1 so they do not guarantee that it will actually work. So proceed at your own risk! I am just hoping this goes beyond PIM and lets you backup stuff like bookmarks, notes, and other things that desktop manager or a BES collect.

You can download the beta by entering in your name and email at this link.

BBSAK started as a nicer GUI compared to the classic JL_cmdr but has now gone well past even being comparable. The new version 1.3 lets you backup and restore third party applications from your BlackBerry along with saving or removing an individual COD file. The app is now a MUST HAVE in my book and will be following me around on my USB key. It can do anything from removing a IT Policy to taking screenshots to backing up or removing COD files.

Backup now creates .alx file (allows you to install from loader.exe/desktop manager) and wont give you trouble when using desktop manager

Restore 3rd Party apps removed – with alx install in 1 step with loader.exe

Ability to Read all Apps on the Blackberry (3rd party and stock)

Ability to Save individual COD files (C:Program FilesBBSAKCODs(App name)cod file)

Ability to Remove individual COD files (THEY WILL BE LOST FOR GOOD!)

Ability to Load individual COD files (some require phone restarting others do not depends if app is running in background)

Donate button! please donate if you appreciate our hard work!

It looks like a new BlackBerry application that makes a backup of your contacts on their servers and lets you share content with services like YouTube, Facebook, and more.

They have a free and premium account option but I cannot really recommend the premium account except for one feature. It lets you restore all of your contacts back to your BlackBerry more than once a year. I guess this is targeted at Europe due to the prices only being in Euros but it is definitely worth a look if you want a free solution for backups… Though you could always use Google Sync…

Personally I think that if you are willing to pay you would be better served with a hosted BES solution or SmrtGuard at the very least.

Check it out at http://www.pleex.com and let me know what you think. You need to register on their site from your PC/Mac first before you can download the app.
