Until now all the apps were limited to Wi-Fi. Apple & Skype immediately responded that they were happy with the announcement and Skype would work over 3G soon!

Now this just makes me go back to when we found out that RIM developed their own Skype client and killed it because it would cut into carriers voice business. They even crippled their own Mobile Voice System to not work over VoiP for that same reason. Now that one of their biggest partners AT&T is cool with it will we finally see it released? I doubt it but one can always hope.

Still when the Skype client for BlackBerry was first released we were unimpressed since it did not do true VoiP. Maybe now Skype will change and update their BlackBerry app too? I know that Agito managed to figure out how to make VoiP calls on a BlackBerry. Maybe somebody else can do the same?

I know one of the major hurdles for VoiP applications is that it is practically impossible to support “full duplex” on a BlackBerry. Full duplex means recording and playing audio simultaneously. There are quite a few hacks in this regard but RIM is not offering much help in terms of code samples and not supporting JSR 180. The most I have ever read from RIM was this short paragraph from Mark Sohm on the developer forums.

The behavior you see here can vary based on the BlackBerry smartphone model due to the fact that it is primarily based on the underlying hardware of the BlackBerry smartphone. Simultaneous playback and recording is possible on some models, however only one codec can be used at the same time. This means that you’d need to record and play back audio using the same format.

You can try and read up on the subject using this forum search but if anybody has found a solid solution let me know!

So RIM… Now That AT&T is Allowing iPhone VoiP Over 3G…

AT&T has just raised their bar in more places. One of their big differentiators was and is rollover minutes while other carriers like T-Mobile & Verizon offered unlimited calling to 5+ preselected numbers. Now AT&T is going to offer both rollover AND unlimited calling to 5 friends on individual plans and 10 on FamilyTalk plans!

AT&T is calling it AT&T A-List with Rollover where you can call five “VIP” domestic numbers at no cost or 10 numbers on a family plan. The only catch is that you need to either be on an individual nation plan of $59.99+ or a FamilyTalk plan of $89.99+. Once the program goes live on September 20 you will be able to manage the VIP A-List at http://www.att.com/alist.

So what do you think? Is the A-List going to make you stick with AT&T as the iPhone slowly kills their data network?

Thanks Peter for sending this one in!

I was debating posting this commercial but after all the tips sent in about it I caved… Verizon aired a commercial about their network parodying Apple & AT&T’s “there’s an app for that” style commercial. This one is “there is a map for that” touting Verizon’s supposed 3G coverage superiority. Check it out below:

Personally I have heard arguments from both both sides of the fence and its hard to compare one map to the other. AT&T does not really provide you with a coverage map for 3G only on a national scale. They only show you city by city or total data coverage including EDGE on the national level. Verizon is also tricky with their partners that they share towers with. Many people love the features available on GSM carriers like conference calling and setting ring length but solid call quality is nothing to shake a stick at. Still the iPhone has been killing AT&T’s network out here in NYC so I am all for giving them a little taste of their medicine. Even if it may be wrong… It still feels so right!

Now they have released the same exact OS version with a new maintenance release bundle 517 compared to the older 508.

You can pick it up at http://www.att.com/bbdownloads but an OTA OS upgrade should also work.

Thanks to panpan1975 for the tip!

Customers who downloaded bundle 508 should upgrade as soon as they are able as bundle 508 contains the software issue that is addressed in bundle 517. It turns out that one Gizmodo reader, Manoj, tried taking his phone into the iPhone genius bar in NYC for dropping calls. His iPhone reported that it dropped about 22% of calls and he thought something was wrong.

Turns out that Apple claimed the device is fine. He claims the “Genius” said that dropping 30%+ of calls in NYC on AT&T is “NORMAL.” I can’t wait for AT&T to lose the iPhone exclusive. If they renew it I am definitely switching carriers!

According to the BoyGenius’s latest screenshots it looks like we may have to swallow our words. AT&T’s systems are showing a BlackBerry 9000 Bold in white alongside the upcoming BlackBerry 9700 Bold in charcoal.

So anybody counting down the days until AT&T releases the 9700? Personally my black/chrome bold is so scratched up it needs to be replaced…

AT&T is calling it AT&T A-List with Rollover where you can call five “VIP” domestic numbers at no cost or 10 numbers on a family plan. The only catch is that you need to either be on an individual nation plan of $59.99+ or a FamilyTalk plan of $89.99+. You can read more about it at http://www.att.com/alist.

I went to AT&T’s website and logged into my account and got a little advertisement in the lower left corner for checking my A-List availability. Since I am on a 550 minute family plan I am not eligible but the program is now live.

Here are a few details:

Individual nation plan of $59.99+ or a FamilyTalk plan of $89.99+

Add any domestic number including landlines

5 numbers for individual plans and 10 for family plans

Numbers added to your list will activate after about 24 hours from when you add them

The older 8XXX series devices have not been seeing much update love recently so I am trying to point out their upgrades when they are available. Cory let me know that AT&T has released OS 4.5.0.158 for the 8110 Pearl which is a newer version than even the latest leak. It weird that AT&T only updated the 8110 OS but I guess weirder things have happened.

AT&T is coming late to the femtocell game. The crazy part is that they still think they can get a premium for it. The idea of a femtocell is that you can hook up a mini cellphone tower to your internet connection and get better wireless service inside your home. The AT&T solution only works on 3G phones and lets you register up to 10 phones but only four simultaneous calls or data sessions are supported at the same time.

The real crazy part is that according to a leak on Engadget AT&T wants to charge $20/month for unlimited calling at home. They will lower it to $10 if you have AT&T landline or internet service or they will make it free if you have both which is sort of redundant. Sadly this femtocell also has a GPS chip so it needs to be by a window in North America or else it wont work. That is what I love about T-Mobile’s @Home service since it works anywhere in the world.

Compared to other carriers AT&T seems to be charging a serious premium for you to improve their spotty coverage. Verizon only charges you a one time $150 fee for the device with no unlimited minutes and T-Mobile gives you unlimited minutes for $10/month. Sprint charges $4.99/month to use the device with unlimited usage pegged at $10 a month. Makes me wonder how AT&T will justify the $20 price tag…

Check out the details at AT&T’s MicroCell microsite

I am not that versed in carrier discounts but a free BES license with activation sounds like a big deal:

Free 20 user BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 (MSRP $3,999) with purchase and activation of 20 BlackBerry or BlackBerry Connect smartphones

Free 5 user BlackBerry Professional Software (MSRP $499) with purchase and activation of 5 BlackBerry or BlackBerry Connect Smartphones

50% off 10 user CAL packs (MSRP $699 promo price of $349.50) with purchase and activation of 10 BlackBerry or BlackBerry Connect Smartphones

In short if you are planning on purchasing an activating 10+ BlackBerrys you can get a very nice discount on your BES overhead. The interesting part is that AT&T is still pushing BlackBerry Professional Software which has not seen an upgrade since BES 4.1 Service Pack 4 which puts it WAYYY behind BES 5.0 not to mention the fact that it is missing the features like HTML email in BES 4.1 Service Pack 6. Last I heard BPS was supposed to get the axe already.

Check out the full discount doc by clicking on the image to the right. There is some fine print that you should read if you are interested after the jump

BES must be active and in use within 60 days of order date. Limit 1 per customer.

New activations only; requires at least a one-year service contract on BlackBerry or BlackBerry Connect data plans (excluding BlackBerry Enterprise 4 MB data plans) for all activations. Devices must be submitted on a single order, or on multiple orders submitted on a single calendar day. Supported AT&T BlackBerry Connect smartphones include: AT&T Tilt™ and MOTO Q™ Global.

Multiple discounted CAL packs per customer permitted to a maximum of 5 CAL packs, provided that equivalent number of BlackBerry and/or BlackBerry Connect smartphones are purchased and activated as per footnote 2

The Tour upgrade makes sense since it is incremental and I hope it helps users with the annoying trackball issues but that may be a hardware issue.

NOTE: It looks like the 4.6.0.508 for the Bold is just the package version and not the app version in my opinion. My guess is it will probably be OS 4.6.0.282 or .291 in the app version.

The upgrade for AT&T is rumored to be coming August 25th and bring:

AT&T Visual Voicemail (optional feature)

General handset software optimization and improvements

Capability to set the device to "2G only" for better battery life and coverage in some international roaming situations

Additional VPLs including My-Cast Weather, Wiki Mobile, Mobile Banking, a few games and more.

Now I am only curious as to how much AT&T will try to charge for Visual Voicemail. Anybody want to place some gentleman bets? My guess is $9.95/month for something YouMail will do for free.

This is some pretty nice news for those of us waiting for the upcoming BlackBerry 9700 upgrade to the Bold line. It has been spotted in both the Bell Canada and AT&T systems with screenshots for proof. This usually means that a release is not that far off… There has also been a spotting of a odd all white BlackBerry Bold. Not sure what that means since I have never seen RIM release an all white device unless it has been Colorware-ed.

It lets you toggle the connection between 2G only or 2G/3G. This was available to all when the Bold first launched but was locked for some asinine reason on AT&T Bolds further down the OS line.

Users used to de-brand their phone or set this setting using the Engineering Screen but now you can easily get to it with this upgrade. I am glad RIM finally came to their senses.

As Bla1ze points on on CrackBerry this setting is very important for those who want to save battery life on 2G only. Or if you are in a location with weak 3G you could stop your device from hunting down the weak 3G signal and killing your battery or constantly cutting out.
