<p>All this talk of 2G, 3G and 4G can get confusing. Chris Ziegler of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/" rel="nofollow">engadget </a>wrote an extremely in-depth analysis and critique about the G's. Its very interesting how much marketing plays a role here. </p>
<p>Check out the article <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/17/2g-3g-4g-and-everything-in-between-an-engadget-wireless-prim/" rel="nofollow">here</a>.

<p>I'm not sure I'm convinced that I'll need more than wi-fi on a PlayBook. Sure, I won't have data access everywhere I go, but more and more areas are offering wi-fi services and I have a BB with a data plan that I can tether if I really need to. For some, this is a no-brainer because they will never be close to wi-fi zones, but for those of us who <em>will</em> be most of the time, I don't see the point of jumping into another data contract. What do you think?

<p>I was debating posting this commercial but after all the tips sent in about it I caved… Verizon aired a commercial about their network parodying Apple &amp; AT&amp;T’s “there&#8217;s an app for that” style commercial. This one is “there is a map for that” touting Verizon’s supposed 3G coverage superiority. Check it out below:</p>
<p> <object width="http://www.berryreview.co/480" height="385"><param name="http://www.berryreview.co/movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/37NKnDRPFKU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;"></param><param name="http://www.berryreview.co/allowFullScreen" value="http://www.berryreview.co/true"></param><param name="http://www.berryreview.co/allowscriptaccess" value="http://www.berryreview.co/always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/37NKnDRPFKU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;" type="http://www.berryreview.co/application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="http://www.berryreview.co/always" allowfullscreen="true" width="http://www.berryreview.co/480" height="385"></embed></object> <br /><!--more-->
<p>Personally I have heard arguments from both both sides of the fence and its hard to compare one map to the other. AT&amp;T does not really provide you with a coverage map for 3G only on a national scale. They only show you city by city or total data coverage including EDGE on the national level. Verizon is also tricky with their partners that they share towers with. Many people love the features available on GSM carriers like conference calling and setting ring length but solid call quality is nothing to shake a stick at. Still the iPhone has been killing AT&amp;T’s network out here in NYC so I am all for giving them a little taste of their medicine. Even if it may be wrong… It still feels so right!</p>
<p>via <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/10/05/verizon-removes-gloves-begins-theres-a-map-for-that-anti-atand/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.engadgetmobile.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Engadget Mobile</a></p>

There were some pretty good signs pointing towards a 3G 9700 Bold/Onyx coming to T-Mobile this year (<a href="http://www.berryreview.com/2009/08/11/blackberry-9700-pictured-spotted-on-t-mobile-3g-detailed-on-att/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">including a picture of one</a>) but this more or less confirms it. <a href="http://www.cio.com/article/501574/First_Official_BlackBerry_Bold_9700_Onyx_T_Mobile_Image_09_Launch_Expected" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.cio.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Al Sacco over at CIO</a> was sent a email from T-Mobile’s US PR firm before any embargo agreement. </p>
<p>They also sent him a little blurb about it:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>The BlackBerry &#8216;Onyx&#8217; sports a premium experience and design with a high-gloss black finish and leather grain detail on the back. Boasting features such as high-speed 3G Web browsing, Wi-Fi calling, visual voicemail and support for corporate and personal e-mail options, the &#8216;Onyx&#8217; will satisfy all your on-the-go needs. Also the phone comes preloaded with mobile applications from BlackBerry App World, including Amazon MP3 store for quick and easy music downloads and TeleNav GPS Navigator for turn-by-turn directions.</em></p>
</blockquote>
<p>The device is not officially called a Bold yet and we won’t know that for sure until later. Hopefully this will include UMA support with Wi-Fi at launch.&#160; The addition of the Amazon MP3 store is interesting. So what do you think?</p>

TmoNews has been a pretty trusty source of rumors which is why I am mentioning it. This is big news since no BlackBerry to date has had the T-Mobile flavor of 3G since it runs on 1700Mhz which no other carrier in the world uses.</p>
<p>We got a look at this <a href="http://www.berryreview.com/2009/08/11/blackberry-9700-pictured-spotted-on-t-mobile-3g-detailed-on-att/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">T-Mobile 9700 3G device back in August</a> thanks to <a href="http://crackberry.com/t-mobile-blackberry-9700-glimpsed-wild" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/crackberry.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Kevin</a> so it looks like the rumor mill is just starting on possible release dates.</p>
<p>Here is hoping that T-Mobile launches this soon!</p>

First the <a href="http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/08/09/att-pre-launch-lineup-blackberry-9700-htc-tilt-2-garmin-g60-more/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.boygeniusreport.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">BoyGenius caught a spec sheet</a> for AT&amp;T showing the BlackBerry 9700 coming to AT&amp;T sometime in the next few months. The 9700 is essentially a new Bold with bumped up specs and a new trackpad instead of trackball.</p>
<p>Then came a thread on CrackBerry forums spotted by <a href="http://blackberrysync.com/2009/08/hot-new-pictures-of-blackberry-onyx-bold-9700-surface/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/blackberrysync.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">BBSync</a> showing off the back and front of a unbranded BlackBerry 9700. <a href="http://forums.crackberry.com/f146/onyx-field-t-289407/index11.html#post3300052" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/forums.crackberry.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Pictures at this link</a>. Not sure who originally posted them since the thread is taking forever to load.</p>
<p><a href="http://crackberry.com/t-mobile-blackberry-9700-glimpsed-wild" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/crackberry.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Kevin took things one step further</a> by snapping a picture of a T-Mobile BlackBerry 9700 clearly showing it including 3G! No word on if this will ever see the light of day since we did see leaks of a T-Mobile 3G Bold back in the day that never actually got released…</p>
<p>Here is to hoping T-Mobile gets on the 3G BlackBerry bandwagon!</p>
<p>Thanks to everybody who sent these in!</p>

It lets you toggle the connection between 2G only or 2G/3G. This was available to all when the Bold first launched but was locked for some asinine reason on AT&amp;T Bolds further down the OS line.</p>
<p>Users used to de-brand their phone or set this setting using the Engineering Screen but now you can easily get to it with this upgrade. I am glad RIM finally came to their senses.</p>
<p>As Bla1ze <a href="http://crackberry.com/network-selection-t-bolds-now-available-os-4-6-0-282" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/crackberry.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">points on on CrackBerry</a> this setting is very important for those who want to save battery life on 2G only. Or if you are in a location with weak 3G you could stop your device from hunting down the weak 3G signal and killing your battery or constantly cutting out.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=EEFC9E10EBDC4A2333B42B2DBB8F27B6" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.blackberry.com');" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">As a reminder you can find the OS link here</a></p>
