Tim let me know about the public beta of BerryAddon from an unknown company called Twinkler Software Products. It is in free beta right now but it looks like they will be charging for it in the future since there is a registration page. It just popped up on the radar in the last few weeks and looks like a VERY powerful little tool that takes less than 90kb! There is really no other name for such an app other than an All-In-One utility.

Tashanna let me know about this new public beta of BBScanner which lets you listen to police and fire scanners on your BlackBerry. The app is free during the beta but I am not sure if it will remain that way. It looks like the app is using free feeds from RadioReference provided by volunteers so not all areas are covered.

The idea is pretty cool and I can imagine some ambulance chasing lawyers listening on their BlackBerrys… The audio is streamed through the BlackBerry Music Player so I think the app is just an easy to use catalog of available streams.

Check it out at http://www.bbscanner.com or download it OTA at ota.bbscanner.com
BBScanner: Listen to Police & Fire Scanners on your BlackBerry

Desktop Manager 5.0.0.8 made a pretty splash when the BlackBerry Tour was released. I got quite a few emails these past few days that RIM has been pushing out Desktop Manager 5.0.0.11 as an automatic update. Until now I just assumed it was a bug fix but did not know what it fixed exactly so I did not mention it.

Tom and a few other readers sent in tips pointing to the fact that this version fixes some of the database backup errors causing problems in 5.0. For example when doing a backup, instead of failing when there is an error, it will now tell you what database failed and offer to continue and complete the backup. Now that is worth mentioning!

You can pickup 5.0.0.8 directly now or through Verizon (use any number) and then check for updates to get this version.

He let me know that he has updated the files available and added support for the BlackBerry Tour.

It has been possible for quite awhile to add Hebrew fonts to your BlackBerry by installing a multilingual OS on your device but you had to hunt around for the right one. The problem is that you had to reinstall your OS to get the Hebrew font to work which turned away many people who were interested.

That is why Nathan created a simple download page where you can easily find the right files to install Hebrew fonts on your device. The best part is that you do not need to reinstall your OS to get Hebrew fonts since this installs like an application. Currently you can add the read only fonts OTA but if you want to be able to write with the fonts you will need to do this using the desktop install files on the same page.

This is not the biggest upgrade in the beta but I really like the LiveTracker application so I was just looking for an excuse to mention it since the beta started.

I am not sure how useful the location sharing features will be once BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 is released officially but the tracking features are nice AND FREE! I just wish they would add in cell tower triangulation so it does not always need to use GPS.

I couldn’t stop chuckling while watching this little YouTube clip. It looks like John Hargrave got so fed up with Verizon’s privacy policies that he tracked down the CEO’s home address and cellphone. He then proceeded to his house and asked him kindly, using a megaphone, to stop Verizon’s weak privacy policies. Its a gem of a video…

Sadly this upgrade adds an annoying advertising banner to the application… It is Ubertwitters choice on how to monetize their application but this may turn many off from the application since the BlackBerry screen is already pretty small to eat more real estate. Hopefully a paid version will also come out soon.

Changes include:

Multiple Accounts – You can now configure multiple accounts, each with their own set of on-device preferences.

You can now BLOCK people!

Video Integration – We have partnered with TwitVid.com to offer you an outstanding video integration.

Goto user – You can now enter twitter users name and go directly to their timeline

URL Shortening – we’ve integrated with bit.ly so you can easily send those long URLs now and not bump up against the 140 limit

MUCH faster photo uploads, significantly improving the user experience.

Use of the internal GPS is now solidly supported with proper fallback to cell tower based location when GPS isn’t available.

Icon Caching If you have and SD card, we will cache avatar icons on the card, increasing the speed of timeline displays and reducing network traffic.

You can now select pictures and videos that have already been take and are on your device. The interface shows the most recent at the top and offers a preview so you can verify it is the picture/video you expected!

When composing a tweet you can now insert symbols from a large selection of commonly available characters such as smiley’s, hearts, etc.

Integrated advertisements – Please note, the ads are there to support the freely distributable version of ÜberTwitter. Users that purchase ÜberTwitter will not have advertisement in their version.

We’ve streamlined the friends and followers lists

You can now see both the number of friends, followers, and tweets sent when viewing the details of a tweet.

Replying to a DM from the timeline will now correctly send a DM and not a regular tweet

Fixed the bug in reply all where it would truncate some twitter user names

Added reply all to the menu when viewing a tweet

You can pickup the update at http://ubertwitter.com/

They just confirmed that RIM Asia Pacific Vice President of Government Affairs Gregory Shea will now get an even longer title. His additional role will be China region president. This is along with a new China subsidiary including RIM’s headquarters in Beijing along with Shanghai and Guangzhou.

RIM must really be aiming at that 500+ million subscribers on China Mobile. I wish them luck!
