I recently upgraded to the 9900 and I had my mind made up but didn't reveal any BB loyalty at all (except walking over to the 9900) and the AT&T rep sold it pretty well. He asked if I already had a smartphone, then what I was looking for and when I replied I was looking for a QWERTY keyboard, he said that the 9900 was in his mind the best keyboard available and that he was actually impressed with it enough that he was using a 9900. I then asked if AT&T was going to be offering any new Blackberry devices soon, the 9790, and he said probably not until year end or 2013 but he didn't say anything like "we're holding out for BB 10 devices" or "Blackberry is coming out with a new OS and the devices are coming out...".

...then again, after 2011, why announce anything? They didn't make the original playbook date, then the infamous native email in 60 days...what other deadlines did they fail to make that I'm forgetting? OS10 was 2nd quarter '12 if I recall and now all I'm hearing is by year end...

1 week from the hard rumored 17th release date.

Less than 3 weeks before end of February

I am getting more pissed at RIM for not announcing anything.

Everyday that goes buy RIM loses customers.

This (<--- click here)is the kind of thing RIM needs to trumpet once BB10 comes.

The article points out that because of QNX, BB10 phones will be able to download and update the OS without ever turning the phone off. No other OS can match this. RIM need to screem this from the mountain tops and show all sorts of other phone downloading and rebooting to get the new OS.

Even if this is small practically they need to create the impression that this is a must and if you don't have it, your phone is out of date!

The kid said QNX without prompting from me so he knew something. Of course I think if BB10 delivers on Android Apps and eye candy these "kids" might just come around and say BB10 is cool.

The message here is that while RIM might think they need to appeal to "corporate" types the truth is most people come into those stores without a clue and those young sales people have a huge influence over phone choice.

The 17th is the latest rumored date. However, we have still no heard anything official other than by the end of February. I find the 17th to be a rather odd release date. Who releases a major update on a Friday?

I'll take a stab at this one since iOS is a POS in a walled garden. Overall QNX is better. app quality: No, Developer base: For now iOS has that. I don't think RIM wants to chase apple. I'm pretty sure they want it to be the other way around. Give the 75 million subscribers they have what they ask for, to survive this last wave until the superphones are on market.

I know OS2 is not BB10, but for those using the developer version I'd like to know if it is on par with the iPhone.

For example do we still see things like disappearing apps when too many are open? Do you see a lot of high quality Android apps in App World?

We've had some good games come but when I spend sometime with the iPhone I noticed some very useful Apps like the OED (dictionary) that seemed to be totally on the iPhone (not accessed via web).

Are these things there?

Really just curious and also want to set my expectations correctly. if OS 2 is pretty comparable to iPhone we can hope that BB10 will allow RIM to focus on unique things rather than catch up things (not a negative comment, I'm just really curious).

Thanks

I use Format Factory for converting pretty much anything. Definitely have converted videos for my 9900 using it. Haven't tried an iTunes video but I checked now and it looks like m4v is one of the types you can convert. Its a desktop app, if I recall its free and can be found on download.com or other sites. If I have the chance in the next couple of days, I'll try converting an iTunes movie on my own...

Just phoned up Verizon to talk about my bill. At the end I asked if I could upgrade after a year like I could on AT&T. He said they wouldn't proactively offer me the upgrade but if I called in they might do that.

Then I said it was because the new BB 10 phones were coming out. He said ya they loook really good but they are very far behind and prob not a good idea to go with Blackberry again...

I sure as hell hope RIM knows they have these problems. The keep saying they have excellent carrier relations, but I know my sotry is not unique.

Well when I send something via BBM on the playbook it will show a clock or transmission symbol rather than updating to sent.

When I send email sometimes the send button doesn't work or the screen doesn't update so you don't know if the message is sent or not.

I know some or you run 2.0 so may not have these problems but I doubt I'm the only one running 1.0 who has them.

Also I've update to a new 9930 and still the same issues.

My bridge sucks.

Also I think there are a lot of uses for native BBM on the playbook. Example create a photo on scrapbook send it via BBM... Tons of other cool stuff will be on the playbook that you'll like to send to BBM friends and groups.

Why does your bridge suck?

Also, I believe you can do all that already through BBM Bridge

Brian and I aren't saying they shouldn't get BBM working natively. They just don't need to make it a priority. That's why it won't be included in the OS release when it first comes out.

My bridge sucks.

Also I think there are a lot of uses for native BBM on the playbook. Example create a photo on scrapbook send it via BBM... Tons of other cool stuff will be on the playbook that you'll like to send to BBM friends and groups.

I just noticed that RIM is in the App Planet Hall at MWC 2012. I'm not sure, but I think the location may tell us a little about what they are up to. I used to think they might wait to release PlayBook OS2 until MWC, but now I'm thinking they will release it the week before and announce a bunch of new big name apps at MWC. Maybe we'll finally see Skype and Netflix if we're lucky.

I have voiced this thought before regarding BBM and Playbook

At this point I would imagine the high high majority of Playbook users own a Blackberry phone.

Thus, with the bridge feature, there is no need for native BBM

Because of this, its very low on the concern list for users, thus, its not getting focused on with all RIM's resources.

I am never far enough away from my phone, even in my home, that the bridge bluetooth connection fails, so, I am always connected

I think the toughest part is syncing messages you send. They need to show up on all your devices, but not get alerted as a new message. Receiving messages on all your devices is not that difficult. They could look up your BBID based on your PIN and send the message to all other PINS associated with it. They could switch BBM to work off BBID instead of PIN but that would require a lot more work. Either way, I think it means recoding a lot of BBM.

I don't understand why everyone is so upset that native BBM isn't on the Playbook. If you already use BBM then you have a Blackberry and can just use the bridge. If you don't already use BBM then you aren't losing anything so there's no reason to complain that you don't have it. Still, I would like to see it show up as a native app. I just don't think it's a high priority issue.

I'm going to bet that once we get BB10 phones and 4G playbooks, RIM will have figured out how to link those two PINs on the NOC. Why? Because you are paying for two data plans and they will be happy to solve this problem.
Time will tell if I am right, but I'd bet quite a bit of money on this.

I think it's purely a tech issue but even Apple or Droid wouldn't be able to overcome that issue. Just think about it... if you have one phone number and somebody texts you, you're only going to get that message on that number not on another number on another device. It's exactly the same with a PIN. If Apple's iMessage was based solely on PIN then people receiving their iMessage can only receive it on one device.

Unless it's an email there are no communication devices that can accept the same message on two different numbers.

And I think BBM still has to go thru their NOC which is connected via BES or BIS and not by Wi-fi which is probably another reason BBM won't be native to a wi-fi only PB. If you bridge with a BB then you'll get your BBM and if you want BBM that much then that's incentive to get a BB phone.
