- Unless you are really streaming audio & video all day long, I find it hard to believe that people are going over these caps regularly. The reason I say that is, don't most of you connect to WiFi more often than not when you're using your BlackBerry? Don't get me wrong, I don't like what the entire industry is doing lately. Clearly, a lot of people must be going over 5GB/month if Verizon took the time to come up with this tiered system. Still, at 3G speeds, I would have to think those people have their data connection pegged 24/7. With 4G appearing, Verizon looks to be covering their butts.
- I'm sorry, but RIM is really dropping the ball on this tablet and it's still months away. If I recall correctly, the first devices will be sans 3G/4G - you must connect via wifi (better be 802.11n) or bridge through your BlackBerry. Right there, RIM is limiting themselves. Personally, I don't want anything but wifi or tethering because I refuse to pay for a second wireless plan, but that doesn't mean that a HUGE portion of the mobile user base will be happy connecting their phone to a tablet. The lack of PIM is ridiculous. Stop saying "Well, Apple did this..." Who cares? RIM is in the fight of their lives with companies like Apple and all the Android devices out there. They need to do what those companies/platforms aren't doing in order to sway users. Remember, those of us reading these blogs are most likely already BlackBerry fanboys. I know I am. You've got to think about the soccer moms out there, the businessmen who are looking for a device of convenience. RIM had a golden opportunity to say "Take that iOS & Android! Look at what the Playbook can do!" and this 1st generation device doesn't look spectacular to me. Yes, full Flash support is cool. It is not enough. If the device were basically a full BlackBerry in 7" size with the addition of the new, slick OS - then they'd have a winner. It just seems to me that RIM can't do anything right. Like I said, they're in the fight of their lives and while I'm getting off topic, the devices coming down the pipe in 2011 don't excite me for one second. :-(
- I'll admit it...I hate Apple. I hate the iPhone. I hate the MacBook Pro. I wouldn't use iTunes if you paid the charges for me. With that in mind, until I have a chance to use a Playbook, I have been thinking that 7" is a tad too small. This might sound crazy, but I think 8" would have made all the difference in the world. David did a great job with this article. I like the "hands-on" analysis comparing the sizes. I'll admit that he's probably on to something. 10" is definitely a bit big. Considering the cost for the 64GB model, I would personally prefer to get a small notebook computer. I just checked Newegg and you can get a 11.6" Acer laptop for $599 - that is less (considerably less than the Wifi+3G 64GB iPad) than the iPad by $100. It will be interesting to see how the Playbook sells. Even if it is a complete flop - which I doubt it will be - it will still be a winner for us, the consumer. Why? The new QNX OS will be the future of BlackBerry. I just know it. I hope it's not too late. We've lost a tremendous amount of users to the iPhone and Android devices the past two years. I've almost made the move to Android myself and I'm an admitted BlackBerry fan-boy. I see great things with this new OS. It BETTER end up on their phones. If it doesn't, RIM is even more foolish than I already think they are...
- This is a VERY fun time-waster game. The perfect type of game to get into when your stuck in that cold room waiting for your doctor to come in... I removed it from my device, however...I just couldn't take the constant updates. It seemed like there was an update 5-6 days a week. I don't really mind that, but the constant rebooting of the device pushed me over the edge. If that doesn't bother you - I highly recommend this game.
- Very good article. This is something I have wondered about since the beginning of BlackBerry App World. What I do find strange is: Some applications (think that Hangman game you featured recently) have application update notifications almost daily. I had to delete that game because I just couldn't take it anymore, but that's another story. Anyway, this is VERY frustrating for me, personally, because I have been designated the "BlackBerry guy" among my circle of friends who own a BlackBerry device. I have a group setup in BBM "BlackBerry News" where I send out application update notifications (especially non App World stuff like Google Maps), OS update news, etc. It's a pain in the butt when I mention App World related information because I inevitably receive 4-5 replies along the lines of "what update? Not for MY device..." and I just sigh. Up until now, I didn't really have a good answer as to why this was the case. Thank you for shedding light upon the "why". Now, I am off to compose a group message to explain all this nonsense to my less-tech savy BlackBerry friends. ;-)
- I like little apps like this. Its nice to check out whats going on, system-wise, every now and then...
- While I think you are correct, in a sense, Verizon definitely is losing their love for BlackBerry and riding the Android train...I think this actually has more to do with the fact that this is one horrible-looking device. There are many people, like myself, who would have jumped onto the Android wave quite some time ago if I could find an Android device that had a physical keyboard even remotely close to the feel of a BlackBerry. Since I can not, I stay with my BlackBerry. It is obvious that touchscreen devices are becoming more and more accepted by the masses. I think a lot of that has to do with just the sheer size of the screen. Let's face it, as much as I enjoy my BlackBerry Bold 9650 - the screen size is fairly tiny compared to the Torch, iPhone and several Android devices and I would kill for the Torch solely for its larger screen. We all know that AT&T has the Torch locked down for a while. I think RIM really messed up by making this 9670 flip phone. They should have just pushed out another traditional style (think 9650) device with beefed-up specifications and BlackBerry 6. If it weren't for their iron-tight grasp on the Enterprise domain, RIM would probably be singing the blues along with Palm. Their ideas of "beefing-up" devices is laughable. But, that is another issue altogether.
- Ronen, you say that "This is a Wi-Fi only version and will connect to your BlackBerry for wireless internet." Please tell me that you may also connect to your home, work, etc. wi-fi connection as well. If you can ONLY pair the PlayBook to your BlackBerry, that is a huge fail in my opinion.
- Yeah, this is VERY disheartening. It pains me to see RIM dropping the ball time and time again. It baffles me how RIM, still the current leader in smartphones (in terms of marketshare), hasn't been able to learn from the other players in the game. They built their lead (again, marketshare) based on a time when e-mail was king and 3rd party applications were nothing to care about. If it weren't for government agencies and businesses that demand a BES solution, RIM would probably be defunct.
- Natemz makes the most incredible themes! The fact that he gives them away for free is amazing. I installed this BBZenPro theme on my Tour. It is very nice and indeed, it is snappy. I had to go back to his BBProV5 theme, however, it is just too good to replace.
