BeejiveIM Beta 1.9.7 Released – Adds OS 5.0 Support & More

As I said before I don’t use BeejiveIM but I realize the app is quite popular especially with people who bought lifetime licenses. Tom let us know that they just released Beta 1.9.7 in their forums that adds a whole slew of new features including the much needed OS 5.0 support.

New features from current production version:

support for 5.0 OS
file transfers via link, you can now transfer files to buddies on all IM accounts.
email push when app running in background (see preferences in app).
send voice notes
send GPS location (if supported by phone)
new chat styles & background images
new buddy list layouts
improved battery life
overall UI redesign
facebook IM
various other bug fixes & enhancements
This beta is not supported on devices with OS’s below 4.2.1.

Get Your Game on With NBA Game Time

While at DevCon I was shown a demo of NBA Game Time and was impressed by watching a game recap on my BlackBerry. The app is really smooth and has some great features like live scores, game summaries, and more. The best part is that the game comes in both a free and $9.99 version so you can choose what features you want. The downside is that they app is a whopping 2.4 Megabytes which will probably keep it off most older devices.

BTW anybody else notice that EA Games released NBA Street for BlackBerry? Haven’t tried it myself yet but I definitely will be…

MyAssist for BlackBerry – Do You Need A Live Assistant/Concierge?

Handmark just released a new service/application called MyAssist. The app and service are intended for busy people who need assistance. I have never used a concierge service myself but I guess some people enjoy their own Mechanical Turk.

Usually we don’t mention these kinds of services but this one has a 7 day free trial that could be quite fun. The service only costs $3.99/month after the trial which seems ridiculously cheap… The service offers:

FileScout File Manager Updated to v1.5

Matthias let me know that his very popular donationware application FileScout has been updated to version 1.5. I had a chance to meet him at DevCon and he told me that he incorporated quite a few suggestions and tips he learned during the conference into this build. This new version is actually the version that he was showing off at this years BlackBerry Developer Challenge during DevCon.

What’s new?

Display of thumbnails in search result (if thumbnail display is enabled and images are in the ‘FileScout Image Cache’)
Thumbnail-Options: New Button to generate all all thumbnails for all images on your device (incl. the SDCard) – this operation can take a while till it’s completed – please be patient!
When resizing images to device resolution size you can now select to keep the aspect ratio of the original image. If this option is selected, then FileScout will cut (left & right or top & bottom) of the image so that it will fit to your device screen resolution.
UserDefined resolution (image resizing) can be now be max 9999 pixel [but it's recommended not use more then 1200px]
Support for DesktopManager Backup & Restore (FileScout settings)
A ‘[W]‘ in the Screen Title indicating that the background threads (required for Search and other extended features) are still running (after FileScout is started) – once the threads are completed the ‘[W]‘ will disappear.

RIM confirmed that they made the System folder in OS5.x read only
FileScout (and all other 3′rd party applications) can only show the content of the System folder but can’t modify anything

TwitterBerry Renamed OpenBeak

I am not sure how many people still use TwitterBerry but Adam @CrackBerry noticed that they changed their name to OpenBeak. I was just reading the latest issue of Laptop Magazine and even they featured TwitterBerry as the main Twitter client for BlackBerry. I don’t think that changing the name of the app was such a great idea after it got so much link love and press as TwitterBerry but they probably needed to change it to be accepted into App World.

New in OpenBeak 1.1:

    * New Setup Wizard
    * Choice of viewing tweets in a list view or a bubble view
    * Notification icon will clear when quitting OpenBeak

English Dictionary & Thesaurus for BlackBerry with Local Storage

Chocolate Chunk Apps let me know that they released their English Dictionary & Thesaurus. The coolest part about this app is that the database is stored on your devices SD card so you do not need a internet connection for it to work. That means you have a 26mb database of 250,000 entries and 1.6 million words in your pocket.

The dictionary is stored in HTML so it works kind of like an iPhone app and easily pulls up information. The first time you run the app you will be asked to download the dictionary which is recommended to be done over Wi-Fi or using a USB cable with your PC though it does work over the cellular connection.

The app is currently on sale for $5.99 until Nov 20 after which it goes up to $12.99. Sadly there is no trial available.

What’s so special about this dictionary?

This application uses one of the largest English databases “WordNet”. It contains over 250,000 entries and more than 1.6 million words (American and British English). This is the only dictionary on the Blackberry that displays definitions in an HTML format (think iPhone dictionaries). This means that each definition has in-built links to related words, and you can jump seamlessly between definitions.

Each definition is displayed in a clean web-page like format and can be scrolled, searched etc just like a normal web page. No web connection needed – once the application data is downloaded the dictionary data is all stored on the device.

National Football Post Releases Free BlackBerry App

I am not a sports fan myself but I have heard of the National Football Post before. They partnered up with Handmark to release a free BlackBerry application for Pro-Football fans. The app gives you real-time access to NFP sports content, news, and information.

Wordpress Beta Updated – Almost There…

Quite a few of you sent in tips about Automattic updating their popular Wordpress BlackBerry client to version 0.9.0.169. They claim they are almost out of beta and I would have to agree with them. Some of these latest new updates are really slick like the ability to upload videos and the new user interface. The app is also not very responsive. Cant wait to see what they have up their sleeve next!

Urbanspoon Releases BlackBerry App – Restaurant Slot Machine

We mentioned Urbanspoon’s service a bit back but they just released a BlackBerry app at DevCon. They sent me an email that their new app lets you choose restaurants near you with a sort of slot machine for picking a favorite.

You just hit the space bar or shake your Storm and it will find a good restaurant near you buy choosing cuisine, neighborhood and price you are looking for. It also lets you simple search and browse restaurants near you using your location.

Loopt Releases Update – Adds Background Location Updating

Loopt just announced an update to their application that will add some more uses to their free application. The app will now help you find places and people nearby using background location updating. My guess is that it will always use GPS or maybe even cell tower triangulation in the background to find people and places near you.

I am not sure how badly this will hit your battery but the idea is pretty cool. The app will keep updating your location kind of like Google Maps Latitude.

Help iblipped Create a User Generated Coverage Map

iblipped is a cool little application/service spotted by Adam @Crackberry that aims to create a user generated coverage map. They provide a free application that measures coverage while using your GPS to find your location. This way they plan on creating a user generated coverage map like you can find at www.iblipped.com.

The app runs in the background but since it is using your GPS all the time along with cellular connection to upload data there may be a battery usage constraint for users so keep that in mind. On the other hand a user generated coverage map could go a long way to proving to your carrier that reception sucks for everybody in your location.

RoadRunner GPS – Track Your Runs & Analyze Them

It has been awhile since we featured an fitness app on BerryReview. Newcomer Kanavon Software let me know about their new application RoadRunner GPS which lets you track your runs using your BlackBerry with GPS. The app lets you analyze your workout and give you feedback with information like

Distance travelled
Elapsed time
Average speed and pace
Calories expended

The app will also let you map your run and view it in BlackBerry Maps. It also has audio alerts and the ability to upload your data to their servers so you can review your data and track you progress over time.

All in all it is a pretty nice app for $4.99 and it has a free trial for you to try before you buy. Let me know if you give it a shot and how it compares to other solutions or even apps like GPSLogger.

Gmail App Updated to v2.0.7 – No Change Log

Here is another update from Google but this time it is a bit confusing. When you head to m.google.com/mail it says the version available is 2.0.6 but if you hit the download button it gives you v2.0.7.

Jason let me know about this update on his BlackBerry 9700 and I confirmed this on my AT&T Bold 9000 and T-Mobile Bold 9700.

Google Maps Updated to v3.2.1 – No Change Log

Vodafone Update 2.0.1 – Free Twitter & Facebook Client

The team at Widgetlabs let us know that the Vodafone Update Twitter & Facebook client we told you about before has been updated to version 2.0.1. Its a pretty solid Twitter client, though not the most powerful, but its nice to have options.

Copy and paste is a no brainer but its nice to see BIS connectivity has been added along with support for AutoText. It still amazes me that not all apps support AutoText. I keep on hearing complaints about Google Voice not supporting AutoText for sending SMS.

Aloqa Beta Updated – Find Interesting places & Events Near You

We mentioned Aloqa a bit back when it was in beta but it was limited to the Curve 8900 and Bold 9000. Now the app is out of Beta and is available for a broader range of devices including the Tour, 83XX series, 88XX series, 87XX series, and 8520. The app is now also feeding you information in the US, Canada, & Austria.

Aloqa supposedly lets you find interesting places, events, & friends near you. I am not sure exactly how it pulls that off but supposedly they are fed information from Facebook Connect, Yelp, Eventful, last.fm, Wikipedia, Craigslist, Topix, Fon, Coulomb Technologies, GreatDad, Google Maps API, Qype, Call-A-Bike, Nestoria, and BeLocal.

It looks like a pretty interesting app if you want to give it a spin and the price is right (free). Check it out at www.aloqa.com and let me know what you find!

Super QWERTY – One Step Closer to a True Shortcut System

I have always dreamed that one day an app would come out to let me assign my own shortcuts to the keys on my BlackBerry keyboard. For example, I miss the shortcut to my alarm clock. Better yet I am hoping that one comes out letting you double tap keys to open an app.

Still Super QWERTY is a step in the right direction. It lets you set the Q key as a shortcut launcher to open up to 80 different shortcuts. Its a pretty cool app for $3.99 and you can find it at this link.

PaderSyncSSH – BlackBerry Finally Has Another Commercial SSH Client

Awhile back Rove Mobile idiotically discontinued their very useful SSH app for BlackBerry leaving a big gap for SSH users like me. MidpSSH is great and up but it is limited in its use. We mentioned PaderSyncSSH while it was in beta but now it has been officially released. The price is a bit high at $24 on sale until Nov 15th but its much lower than Rove’s previous $99 option. I have not had a chance to put PaderSyncSSH through its paces but it looks pretty good so far. Check it out and let me know what you think! Hopefully PaderSyncSSH will remain in active development.

FileScout v1.4.1 Released – Performance Tweaks

Matthias let me know that he has updated his immensely popular FileScout file manager application to version 1.4.1. FileScout is a donationware application that you can download and donate as much as you deem fit. The new version 1.4.1 brings quite a few changes under the hood to make the app more stable and memory efficient. You won’t see those updates in the change log below but they translate into a faster more stable application.

What’s new?

New Simple TextViewer/Editor Option: Select how files will be saved. Either in ‘UNIX Format (CR)’ (default) or in’Windows Format (CRLF)’. By default BlackBerry is storing files in the UNIX Format – which makes editing afterwards e.g. with Windows Notepad a bit difficult.
Storm 2 (9520/9550) will be treated as the Storm 9500/9530 devices (but still no touch screen support yet)
Added a MenuItem for the “Go to Directory” + function
Various performance and memory issue improvements

What’s fixed?

Sometimes FileScout was instantly started again after it was closed by the user (e.g. when during the FileScout session some media files had been opened) – this issue should be solved with this build.
OS 5.x ONLY: Endless loop for system folder fixed – Unfortunately in Beta OS 5.x (Storm & Bold) it’s not possible anymore to access the system folder via the file system API – it looks like RIM have restriced the access to this folder. With this Version FileScout will display an error message when the API does not return any content for a folder. This also means that FileScout can’t be used to delete pre-installed files located in the subfolders of ’system’ for Storm and Bold devices that have installed the OS 5.x. (Beta)
Additional small tweaks for OS5.x Users.

Slacker Updated to v2.0.91 – Pushed To Verizon Storm2

Slacker let me know that Verizon has preloaded all their Storm2’s with a link to download Slacker. Looks like that little partnership is going well for both Verizon and Slacker. Bla1ze also spotted an update for Slacker to version 2.0.91 which sadly does not have a change log.

Still I wish Slacker would finally release an update to let you cache music on your SD card over Wi-Fi. I think it is weak that they still require you to connect a cable to your PC to cache stations…

SHAPE is running a great promotion on their useful RDM+ Remote Desktop client for BlackBerry where it is half off for today only. The app essentially allows you to connect to remote Windows machines from your BlackBerry and interact with them. The app usually costs a hefty $39.95 but is on sale today only for $19.98 which is pretty decent. They even have a free 7 day trial if you want to give it a spin first.

BlackBerry App World v1.1.0.23 Released – No Change Log

Tom let me know that App World has been updated by RIM to version 1.1.0.23. I am not updating myself since the last update bricked my BlackBerry but if you use App World regularly it may be worth it.

Luis let me know about Vodafone Update which is a slick Twitter and Facebook client for the BlackBerry Bold 9000 & BlackBerry Curve 8900. The app kind of reminds me of SocialScope and looks quite good. It will not replace the BlackBerry Facebook client but the Twitter functionality is pretty cool. I guess it is intended for Vodafone users only but it works on my AT&T Bold…

BerryBuzz has been renamed BeBuzz to get into the App World due to RIM’s ridiculous policies where they think they own the word Berry.
