At the beginning of the year RIM released v3.0 of their BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing app in the Beta Zone for the US & UK. Now they have released it out of beta though once again it is limited to the US and UK. I guess they don’t make conference calls in Canada & elsewhere?

Terrence noticed that Jotsy has updated their public beta of Jotsy for the BlackBerry PlayBook to v2.0. In case you don’t remember when we mentioned the original beta Jotsy allows you to annotate PDF documents on your PlayBook and is free for a limited time. It synchronizes your annotations and documents with your PC through their “Cloud.”

The cool part of Jotsy 2.0 is that it brings synchronization of your PC to your Box.com accounts. This allows users of Jotsy to annotate any PDF document that has been uploaded to their Box.com account from their Mac, PC, Email, or other device. Essentially this extends Jotsy to work with anything on Box.com which has clients and interfaces with many other services and devices.

Features contained in Jotsy 2.0 include:

Shape let us know that they have released a new version of their IM+ for BlackBerry app. The new version comes a little over a month after their large 10.0 release and improves upon that build. Shape was also kind enough to send over a change log with the details:

Tangkap introduced me to their sweet screen capture app that is currently my favorite screenshot app on my BlackBerry. Tangkap Layer is totally free and gives you all the basic screen capture functionality you need without all of the annoyances. It allows you to set the image format you wish (JPG/PNG/GIF/BMP) along with also giving you the ability to set the image quality from 10%-100% which allows for smaller images. The other nice part is that unlike other screenshot apps there are no watermarks or logos. It also offers you the easy ability to share the screenshot over email.

I have asked Seal555 if they plan on keeping Tangkap layer free and he confirmed that they have no plans of charging for it. I also asked them to add an option to email screenshots directly from the main screenshot menu instead of having to hit share first and they plan on researching it. Now all they need is the ability to queue up screenshots and post to Twitter and I am golden.

AnV let us know that UberSocial has pushed out another update to their popular Twitter client. This one also brings some small hotfixes like they did earlier this month to v1.304. The change log for this version is:

• Loss of 3G and/or BIS connection after starting UberSocial
• Use of the carrier data plan even though BIS is specified in the configuration

UberSocial is free, but you can pay $4.99 per year to have the ads turned off. You can pick up the update directly from UberSocial or wait for it to go up on App World.

Secure Browser for the Playbook just got a nice little update.  If you are unfamiliar with Secure Browser, it is a light weight alternative to the native browser on your PlayBook that puts your security as its number one priority.  It passwords your favorites, doesn’t allow access to your history.  Secure Browser also allows you to choose which browser you want to be identified with when using different sites.

Here are some of the updates in 1.0.9.53

* Text Reflow added (Thanks HaTaX!)
* Stopping between tabs wasnt fixed, now it is
* More options
* Added logging options on Advanced tab
* Misc bug-fixes (smaller)

We are starting to see some of the fruits of RIM’s Android Player now that BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 is almost upon us. LastPass has released LastPass Password Manager Premium for the BlackBerry PlayBook as long as you are running PlayBook OS 2.0. It gives you access to the very popular LastPass service with a 14 day trial after which it requires a $1/month LastPass subscription.

In case you are not familiar with LastPass here are the features of the LastPass Password Manager Premium:

• Built-in browser that will automatically fill your login information for each of your saved LastPass sites.
• Automatically fill forms on all sites.
• Secure Password Generator.
• Add, update, and delete Secure Notes and Sites.

Since I doubt Microsoft is working on a remote desktop client for the BlackBerry PlayBook its nice to see that Todd Grayson has us covered. Cuba @BBNews.pl noticed that Todd has released a remote desktop client for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This is a full RDP client that lets you connect to your Windows machines using the standard RDP protocol and requires no agent on that PC.

Features include:

• 8, 16, 24 and 32 bit color support
• Standard screen resolutions including the BlackBerry PlayBook native 1024×600
• Maintain a list of server with a single tap to connect
• Pinch-to-zoom
• RDP data compression and caching to save bandwidth
• Scroll lock to all for mouse integration for scrolling windows
• Double tap to open files
• Right Click button for context menus
• A menu icon to show the keyboard to ease text input
• Fit larger resolutions to the BlackBerry PlayBook screen to see your whole desktop or quickly switch back to the connected resolution with the tap of a button

My favorite BlackBerry file manager, FileScout, just got a nice update to v2.8.0.1. This new update brings new goodies but mostly improves the ZIP (Aka file archive) handling features of the app. EmacBerry has rewritten the zip file handling code which has led to some nice benefits like removing the limitation on file sizes of zip archives. The only remaining limitation is that it does not read password protected ZIP files.

You can pick up the latest version of FileScout Premium in App World or you can pick up the donationware FileScout lite free from EmacBerry.

Here is a change log for v2.8.0.1:

• FileScout & FileScoutLite ZIP-file handing have been re-written
• With the new v2.8.0.1 build there should be no limitation concerning the file size of ZIP-Archives that you could browse or de-compress with FileScout (or FileScoutLite).
• When you unzip a large (e.g. 100MB+) archive, please have in mind that you still hold a mobile device in your hands (and not a PC or Mac equipped with a SSD). Most of the time that is required (to process an ZIP-Archive) will be needed for the actual reading (of the compressed stream) and the writing (of the de-compressed data).
• The new build will also report almost instantly, if an archive can’t be read by the application (probably cause it is corrupted/broken).
• Please note that even if most of the ZIP code have been rewritten FileScout is still not able to read password protected archives – sorry.

NerdBerry noticed that Evernote has updated their PlayBook application to v1.2 today but there is no word on what is new. Daniel Bigham has released another one of his popular sync apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook. His latest is a sister app for his iTunes Sync app called iTunes Upload. What it does is upload the music you have purchased on your PlayBook from 7Digital to your PC running iTunes. Currently it only supports Windows PCs unlike the iTunes Sync app which supports both Windows & Mac. You also have to have a little app running on your PC (same app as iTunes Sync) to enable the transfer.

If syncing your music purchases back to iTunes is something you have been struggling with check out iTunes Upload for $1.99 in App World. Kudos to kiddo2050 (different Daniel) for pointing it out in the forums.

Handster now has an impressive 815+ Android apps ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 on App World. One of the latest is eBuddy messenger which is a cross platform instant messaging app. It connects to MSN, Windows Live Messenger, Facebook Chat, Yahoo, MySpace, Google Talk, ICQ, AIM, and Hyves through their app. It actually works ok on the PlayBook even through it seems to be a straight port though it does have an annoying bug of not being able to see what you are typing.

Either way if you are using the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 beta you will want to check out eBuddy free in App World

There have been quite a few solutions over the years that allow you to backup your BlackBerry SMS but Txt2mbox seems to do it a bit differently over IMAP. What it does is backup your sent and received SMS text messages to your webmail email as long as you have IMAP access to your account. If you have Gmail and other good email services then this works like a charm. If you have an email account like Hotmail or Yahoo you will need their premium paid email to get IMAP access.

Either way Txt2mbox works by using IMAP to access your email and putting your sent SMS in your sent mail folder and putting your received email in your inbox. The app also nicely has a free trial in App World after which you can pick it up for $2.99 or you can find more info on their website.

Terrence let me know that Hedonsoft has released Notebook Plus 3 Final in App World this week. The best part is that it is free for an unspecified limited time. Notebook Plus 3 is a simple UTF-8 text editor which allows you to read any UTF-8 files no matter what their extension (.txt, .html, .php, .js, .css etc.). It also has built in insert tags for HTML, PHP, and JavaScript.

RIM officially released v2.0 of their BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing app in mid-December and now Doni let us know that they have released a new beta in the Beta Zone. The new v3.0 is available to Beta Zone members in North America and the UK. It includes a few new features such as:

• Conference Call recognition in the UK
• Homescreen Application Icon
• Dedicated ‘Join Now’ button
• Just one click to Reconnect

BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing automatically finds conference call numbers and codes in your calendar appointments and creates a simple "Join Now" button. If you are unfamiliar with Simple Browser, it is a great 3rd party browser for the BlackBerry PlayBook.   If you are looking into an alternative to Browser, head over to AppWorld and try out the FREE version. I would personally recommend buying the paid version, it allows for tabbed browsing,  as well as some customizable features like custom bookmarks.  The paid version can be picked up here for $1.99.

The hugely popular BeBuzz app from BellShare just got a small update to v5.0.22. In case you don’t know BeBuzz allows you to control the different LED and other notifications for different apps with a crazy level of customization available. They updated the BeBuzz app to v5.0 in mid-December and now we have a maintenance release.

Here is a change log for the latest v5.0.22 (Thanks Bill!)

• BBM chat history is not being deleted anymore
• BeBuzz support now works whether BBM chat is set to device or memory card
• Extended complimentary Text-to-Speech until January 31, 2012
• Added support for browsing for ringtones (pre-installed ringtones cannot be used)
• Automatically reverting to legacy BBM when there is no BBM contact and no toast/TTS for BBM
• Added warning in setup wizard that BBM chat history has to be on
• Fixed display bug in OS 5.0 and before
• Fixed NullPointerException when pressing volume up/down keys without Text-to-Speech outputting audio
• Fixed Text-to-Speech volume setting not correctly applied, leading to silent/non-working Text-to-Speech
