Review: Addictive Tower Defense Game – Editors Choice Winner!

Since I installed Addictive Tower Defense on my Bold 9700 over a week ago I have been hooked. Don’t get me wrong I suck at the game but I played the game for over 2 hours while waiting in line at the DMV. Read on to learn why Addictive Tower Defense won our Editors Choice Award!

In case you are not familiar with Tower Defense game the concept is to stop the invading forces from getting from their starting point to their end point. You do this by erecting barriers, guns, rocket launchers, and more to stop them in their tracks and annihilate the enemy! I find it reminds me of a mash-up of Lemmings & Worms from back in the day.

The graphics in the game are not 3D but they are very impressive and the gameplay is super smooth. My favorite part is that you can pause and save the game at any point making it really easy to pick up and put down between meetings. I truly cant say much more about this game other than it is truly VERY addictive.

In short I HIGHLY recommend Addictive Tower Defense if you are getting tired of playing BrickBreaker. That is high praise coming from a man that finds faults in everything. The only two faults I could find with the game is that it does not have a free trial and that the registration code is tied to your PIN so you need to get it updated when you switch devices.

EA Games Shows Off OpenGL in Need For Speed Shift

EA Games had a great time showing off a live demo of an upcoming game called Need For Speed Shift. (or Tilt I forget… ) The game looks awesome on the Storm2 using OS 5.0 and seems to be pushing some serious graphics. They were quoting stats with thousands of polygons and frame rates of 14 frames per second in a few weeks of development.

The game uses the Storm2 features like the accelerometer and touchscreen to make the game interactive. For example, you tap to screen to break and swipe up to turbo boost. You also tilt the device to steer.

Should be a pretty cool game when it launches with OS 5.0 and its OpenGL support. Only the Storm2 currently ships with the OpenGL API but it should be coming to all devices that can run OS 5.0 in the future.

Tafasa Releases Free Dots Game for BlackBerry Storm

Tafasa let us know about their recent release of Dots for the Storm. This new game kind of reminds me of Netwalk from BEIKS with an interesting twist. The purpose of the game is to connect the dots until you complete a box which earns you a point and an extra turn. The game is ad supported and show ads on the bottom of the screen for other Tafasa applications.

Labyrinth v1.1 – Classic Marble Game Gets New Look

After I played a similar game on my friends HTC Touch I was impressed. Labyrinth is a digital clone of the classic wooden marble game I used to love as a kid. You need to guide the poor little marble past obstacles to its end goal. With the Storm’s accelerometer this game is really cool but it actually still plays nicely on my Bold and is also compatible with the Tour, 8900, & Pearl Flip.

The game is relatively cheap at $4.99 and they do have a free trial. I recommend checking out the game if you are looking for some quick fun. Check it out at this link.

Nintendo GameBoy Color Emulator For BlackBerry?!?

Joe let me know about a thread on CrackBerryAddicted forums where SSJason found a way to port MeBoy to the BlackBerry OS. MeBoy is an emulator for J2ME and seems to work (with varying levels of success) on the BlackBerry OS. Way back in 2007 a couple of people got vNES to work for classic Nintendo games and we get quite a few questions about it every week so this is a dream come true for some.

The games are in no way optimized to work on a BlackBerry and may provide you with some atrocious gameplay framerates but it is fun just for the novelty. Just imagine getting Mario Brothers or Mike Tyson Punchout on your BlackBerry.

The instructions may not work so well for newbies but you can definitely try out the prebuilt installer that has Pokémon diamond, Mario and Yoshi, bomberman, final fantasy 3, and Zelda built into it. You will probably need to copy it to your SD card for manual installation.

Keep in mind that we did not find this so any questions should be directed to the forums at the link below. We take no responsibility if this screws up your BlackBerry but reports are pretty positive so far.

Whac-A-Mole has a special place in my heart. I reference the classic game about once a week to describe something that will relentlessly keep on coming back. I used to play Whac-A-Mole all the time when I was a kid so I just had to mention it when ToySoft released this game. The game is for the Storm only and is spelled a little different from the original but the gameplay is the same. You just need to touch all the moles before the timer runs out. BlackHole – Free Storm Game from S4BB

S4BB let us know that they have released an free game for Storm users. I am not a Storm user myself so I did not get a chance to play it but the game looks fun. Its a little free game where you need to navigate at least half of the shown objects into a black hole.

Space Invaders Coming to BlackBerry – Classics Returning?

With Pacman coming back for free thanks to Benny Chow I have been growing a bit nostalgic. Back in the day games were simpler and quite a bit more addictive. I remember wasting hours playing space invaders back in the day and it looks like Taito is planning on porting the official game to BlackBerry soon.

This prompted me to check it there was a current knockoff of the game for some quick fun. Turns out there are two similar games with one of them being practically spot on.

The first is Invaders! by Link Two the game is really on the low end of the graphics totem pole but plays quite nicely. At $3.99 its a pretty good deal.
Space Ace by MLH Software was quite a bit more fun in my opinion and priced better at $2.99. In this game you fly a close replica to the Enterprise and the up scrolling screen hurls you towards invaders. Classic shoot-em up game.

Let me know if there are any other classic shoot-em up games that I missed! I am always looking for some quick fun on the go.

WAYYY back in 2007 we told you that Benny Chow released a slick free Pacman game for BlackBerrys. Sadly over the years it stopped working in full screen on newer devices due to recent OS improvements. Fast forward to 2009 where cslaten spotted an update by Benny Chow that brings full screen compatibility for the Bold, Tour, & 8900 Curve! Nice work Benny Chow!

Bplay Releases G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra Game Along With BlackBerry Tour Themes!

Sara G. let me know that Bplay has quietly rolled out quite a few themes that are labeled as “Now compatible with the Tour” in their latest newsletter. Pretty cool if you are jonesing for a hot new theme. This just goes to show Bplay’s connections since RIM has yet to release a update of Plazmic Theme Creator to allow designers access to develop Tour themes.

Bplay has also released a hot new game based on G.I. Joe. I remember waking up early as a kid to watch G.I Joe so this just brings back memories. That and knowing the game exists is half the battle…

Reversi (aka Othello) Comes to the BlackBerry Storm – 99 Cents!

Reversi really brings back memories. I used to play it back in the day on Windows 3.11 when I was really bored. Tafasa let me know that they have released Reversi for the BlackBerry Storm. It is a classic strategy game that is easy to pick up but hard to win.

The game is on sale now for 99 Cents until July 31st after which it goes up to $2.99. All in all a pretty good game for a great price. I am a big fan of strategy games on my BlackBerry since they are easy to pause and continue between meetings or while waiting for my wife at Macy’s. Sadly like all Tafasa games this is Storm only…

Texas Hold’em King 3 Storm Edition is now Finger Friendly

Bplay’s Texas Hold’em King 3 is an awesome multiplayer game for BlackBerry. Sadly until now it was not Storm friendly. Magmic let me know that they have now released a Storm Edition of the game that is fully touch capable.

As a reminder Texas Hold’em is a fun poker game with wireless multi-player tournaments with a community of over 100,000 users. At $5.99 it is relatively cheap and you can pick it up at this link. Sadly it looks like there is no free trial…

Nickelbuddy let me know about this slick tower defense game they have called Fierce Towers. I have quite a few friends addicted to their browser based tower defense games and it is cool to see the trend come to the BlackBerry.

Right now it looks like the game only supports the Storm, 8900, & Tour but hopefully Bold support is coming soon. Definitely worth checking out especially at the reasonable $4.99 price.

Lovetris Game Tries to Merge Your Love of Tetris with…

Tashanna let me know about this app Lovetris from HeroSoft. I don’t even know where to start with this app. It is a love story mixed in with a tetris game. I am not sure where the hell the idea came for such an app but it definitely is intriguing. I am not sure if it is worth $2.99 for the game especially considering the fact that you can have regular tetris on your BlackBerry courtesy of BlockBerry (previously known as BBTetris). Either way you will definitely get a laugh out of the description of Lovetris.

Berry Wars: Classic Dope Wars Clone Comes to Storm, Tour, Bold, & 8900 Curve

Tashanna let me know that Epic Applications has released Berry Wars which is a clone of the classic Dope Wars game for BlackBerrys. If I remember correctly there used to be an open source port of Dope Wars for BlackBerry but it is very old and did not save your game when you exited.

Berry Wars looks like it fixes all of those issues and actually makes the text driven game actually look visually appealing. You essentially hit the streets of New York City peddling dope. The game is very addictive once you get the hang of it so its worth checking out.

It is on sale right now for $2.99 until Jul 12th after which it goes to $3.99. Let me know what you think!

SeaBattle Released for Storm – Classic Battleship Game

I love easy, simple, and quick games for my BlackBerry. SeaBattle is one of those games you can easily step in an out of between meetings. I have been playing it on my Bold but ToySoft let me know that it is now also available for the Storm.

Sadly there is no two player or multiplayer online option but a guy can dream… The game is available now for a very cheap $1.99 until July 17th after which it jumps up to $2.99.

Fashion Mogul – Play at Managing a Fashion Empire

Concrete Software just released Fashion Mogul for BlackBerry. I thought it was worth mentioning since this is the first BlackBerry game I have seen that seems specifically targeted at women (as far as I can remember). The game might not have fancy graphics or anything but it was definitely playable. The main downside is that there is no free trial which is the usual for Concrete Software but they do have a satisfaction guarantee. You can find the app in the store for $6.99 if you want to check it out. I am not sure if the device supports the Storm, Bold, or 8900 since they are not listed but they do support OS 4.6 & 4.7… Weird.

So I have to ask is there any interest in these kind of games? Personally I am more a fan of puzzle games and strategy like Chuzzle, Bookworm, & BrickBreaker.

Y! Fan Professional: Yahoo! Mobile Fantasy Sports App Now Available

Derik let me know that he got an email from Y! Fan that they are releasing their BlackBerry app soon. It looks like the app is now available in the App World and will give you mobile access to your Yahoo! Fantasy Sports account. They are going to support OS 4.2.1+ devices so it should cover most people. Right now the app is going for $3.99 for a professional version but I heard rumors that they may have a free one… The download is a whopping 1.56MB so be wary about device memory.

Their website is still reporting the app as coming soon at this link but I found it in the app world by searching for “Fan”. (I really hate these apps that are only available in the App World… I cannot link directly to them)

Hangman Classic Comes to Storm for 99 Cents

Hangman really brings back memories… Tafasa let me know about a new game they have released based on the classic Hangman game. It has one player and two player modes where you can either play one of almost 3000 word puzzles or enter in a word for a friend to guess. You can also research and define the word after you win or lose so you improve your game.

Sadly the game only works on the Storm but that is how most of Tafasa’s games are. Hopefully that will change with time. One of the best parts about the game is the price, which is only $0.99!

StormSweeper: Free Minesweeper Game for BlackBerry Storm

Larry let me know about this new free game from Backroom Software for the Storm. The game is essentially a minesweeper clone so if you have used a Windows PC in the last 15 years you know what that is. The only catch for the free download is that you need to download their CM library before the game but that is not that big of a hassle.

Minesweeper clone. Has three board sizes (Small – 8×8, Medium – 10×10, Large – 12×12) and four difficulties (Beginner – 10 mines, Intermediate – 20 mines, Hard – 30 mines, Expert – 40 mines). Sexy Dice… Now Available for All Devices

Normally I would not mention such an app but after getting 5 different tips about it and spotting it on the store best seller list I changed my mind. Looks like BlackBerry users like sexy dice… The app used to only be available for the Storm but now it is also available for non-touchscreen devices. Not sure if this news will make your day but it gave me a laugh! There are not that many BlackBerry apps that have an “Adult” mode.

The first thought that came to my mind when I read the description was that Sexy Dice is a bachelorette party in a app… It gives you 4 sets of dice ranging from regular dice to naughty sex games. I will just leave it at that and let you read the description. Still for $3.99 it is a pretty cheap laugh.

The storm version of the application leverages the Storm’s accelerometer and allows you to shake and maneuver the dice in real time! Several different modes allow you to either shake while holding the screen, click the screen to start shaking, click the screen to roll and a third timed mode which allows you to click the screen, shake and then automatically have the roll ended after a few seconds. At the end of the roll you hear a realistic sound effect if you have sound enabled and then a zoom in of your roll to see your results.

Best yet, while testing this app everyone i work with that has an iphone was asking where they could get this app, they weren’t happy to find out that there are no sexy dice for the iphone! That’s right, finally an app the iphone does not have. Apple thinks Sexy Dice are too risque for their tastes, leaving iphone users to use grade school romance games.

Remember, the regular dice set means this application is useful for all users, even those who don’t want Sexy Dice/Romance Dice. Its useful to just show people what the Storm (and now all BB’s) can do. Its a GREAT demonstration application for when someone asks what the Storm can do!

All future updates to the application are free. Additional dice sets may be offered in packs in the future.

bWatchDoggy – Free Storm App Barks At Thieves

Personally I am a bigger fan of a screensaver along the lines of “forget the dog, beware of owner” but this free app from Fabian does the trick. bWatchDoggy lets you set your BlackBerry to bark if somebody picks it up after it idles for 3 seconds. This could get really annoying if it is you picking it up but it is fun to scare your coworkers who are always trying to fondle your Storm.

You can pick up the app free at this link and follow the instructions below:

What you do is the following:

Launch the application
Place it on your desk
Wait 3 seconds until the app is active
Wait until the next person picks up your phone
A loud dog-barking sound is played when the device is moved

To stop the barking, swipe your finger on the screen to the right.

Otherwise you can always carry around a stun gun and shock people who try and pick it up.

Pretend You Work for the FBI with the Fake BlackBerry Fingerprint Scanner

Our buddies over at BBSync spotted this entertaining application that pretends to scan your fingerprint on your BlackBerry Storm. I know that OS 5.0 is going to finally bring the possibility of biometrics but this should tide you over until then.

The app only makes you phone look like it is scanning your fingerprints and checking your name in the FBI database. In short it is just to make you look super important for $2.99…

From the description:

Wild West Hangman Game is Actually Pretty Fun

Most of my favorite BlackBerry games are not action games. I find my BlackBerry use lends itself to slower paced puzzle games that I can pause at any time. For example, Chuzzle and Bookworm are nice and simple games that you can pause during meetings…

Our buddies over at BlackBerryCool spotted a new game called Wild West Hangman and I gave it a spin. The game is quite fun and includes 800 trivia questions in 10 different categories. It reminds me of when I used to play tic-tac-toe and hangman on the side of my school notebooks. It is going for $4.99 (On sale from $5.99) in the store which is pretty reasonable and provides quite a bit of fun. The main problem is that there is no free trial but it does seem to be the first game released by MobiMadness. Hopefully they will learn in the future that free trials are a must.

Law & Order Celebrity Betrayal Game Now Available

I have to admit that I am a bit of a Law & Order nut. I have been slowly watching all of the seasons with my wife and I just cannot get enough. (Though the last two seasons are not as good in court) Concrete Software let me know that they have carried the TV show into a game for BlackBerry called Law and Order Celebrity Betrayal. It even has Anita Van Buren and Jack McCoy in the game! I am definitely picking this up at $6.99 but sadly there is no trial for those of you on the fence.
