Thor45 let us know that Spice has released another solid game called Memory. This is Spice’s take on the classic memory game you used to play as a kid where you match the cards but is really targeted at kids though adults can also join in the fun. The coolest part is that the game is BBM connected so you can invite your friends to a game of Memory. There are multiple themes and difficulty levels to change things up.

Trevor Nunes has updated his awesome SEGA Genesis Megadrive emulator for the BlackBerry PlayBook over the weekend. This new version adds the key rom cycling feature that I have been waiting for. It also adds some other goodies you will appreciate. It looks like Trevor is actively working on the port so hopefully more goodies are coming!

Features include:

• rom cycling!
• new gfx and gfx effects buttons
• tv icon selects scanline, blur, interlace ‘tv’ modes
• start button on right hand side of screen, top left is rom cycler …
• HQX button cycles through HQX scaling but currently not scaled, so kind of useless
• missing roms message sticks on screen if no roms are found
• dirs are created for you

I am always up for a puzzle game though Room Escape is a bit much for me. Still I have been hearing about it nonstop for the last month or two since Ivywire released it so it cannot hurt to mention it. Both parts of the game have you clicking around a room trying to find a way to escape from the mysterious room. Its sort of fun and frustrating at the same time and reminds me of a modern day Kings Quest.

Thom let us know about a fun new PlayBook game called Dragon Rescue. This is one of TRUTRUKA’s first BlackBerry games and it seems to be a real hit. I had a chance to play it and its a great “shooter” game with smooth graphics and easy controls. The game could use a bit of work in some departments but the gameplay is solid.

Another day and now we have another emulator for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This new one is for the SEGA Genesis (aka Megadrive) and was done by developer Froggyface. Duke @OpensourceBB noticed the new project (GitHub) and the developer announcing the port on his blog. The emulator port is based on DGen SDL which is a popular opensource emulator for the Sega Genesis. Right now it has some limitations like ROM cycling and zipped ROM support but they are on Trevor Nunes to do list!

You can download and sideload the DGEN emulator for the PlayBook from MediaFire and find instructions on Trevor’s blog. Keep in mind you will have to “acquire” your own SEGA Genesis ROM files but a quick Google search should point you in the right direction.

"Syz: EG" is a slick game developed by TeamKrinoid using the Marmalade SDK that they have ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook recently. It has a really cool use of multi touch with each hand doing something different. You control where you are aiming your weapon with one finger while dodging enemy weapons with your other finger. This also means that the controls are not on screen blocking the gameplay. Syz also throws in some fun with different abilities and perspectives along with voiced dialogue.

SmarterApps has released an update to their popular Angry Farms (Angry Birds style) BlackBerry smartphone game. The new update adds 50 more levels bringing us to a total of 250 levels in Angry Farm. On top of that SmarterApps has added an in app purchase of Farmer’s Dynamite that allows you to destroy any level once an hour for a one time fee of $0.99.

The upgrade is free to current owners and you can pick up Angry Farm in App World for $4.99 if you don’t already have it.

EA has dropped the price again for their popular Monopoly game for the BlackBerry PlayBook that launched last month. It used to sell for $9.99 after the launch sale and is now back to 50% off for $4.99. We don’t know how long this sale will last but this full version of Monopoly is awesome on the BlackBerry PlayBook.

I already had the DDPB installer ready to go on my PC, so getting my favorite SNES games on my PlayBook was as simple as this:

1. Connect the PlayBook to the PC via USB
2. Start development mode on the PlayBook
3. Frantically find SNES roms for my fave games of all time (found them all here, but google can tell you more I’m sure)
4. Download the .bar file
5. Open the DDPB installer
6. Click scan and enter your password
7. Add the .bar file (snes9x-pb-1_0_0_5.bar)
8. Click install and wait for it to complete
9. Find the icon on your PlayBook, open it and allow file access
10. Add all your favorite roms (.smc files) to the roms folder on your PlayBook
11. Enjoy hours of SNES awesomeness wherever you tote your PlayBook!!!

You have to love native SDK’s. The latest goodies are coming to us courtesy of A7omic and jtokarchuk who have together ported SNES9x, a Super Nintendo emulator by Makoto Sugano, to the BlackBerry PlayBook. They have even done all the hard work for you and compiled it into a BAR file for you to sideload onto your PlayBook ASAP. Jtokarchuk sent us the tip and screenshots of the project led by A7omic and I have to say I am excited for some serious Super Nintendo nostalgia on my PlayBook. Now all I need to do is put the control scheme to the test.

Check out A7omic’s thread on CrackBerry forums or GitHub for instructions and you can download the BAR file (just change the extension from .ZIP to .BAR) to play around. The source code and build instructions are also available. Keep in mind you will need to “acquire” ROMs somehow to be able to play SNES games! Let us know if you find some good sources. Street Fighter here I come!!!

PS: A7omic mentioned that he has submitted his app to App World but I highly doubt it will get past App World’s crack team of reviewers…

ToySoft let us know about their latest app FunCam which aims to help you create funny pictures specifically on OS 7.0+ devices. It has a library of 40+ fun clipart pictures like hair, glasses, etc that you can spice up your pictures with. It also has custom effects/filters like grayscale, emboss, negative, paint, sepia, and scatter available to you.

Beat The Intro is a great new free game for your BlackBerry smartphone.  You need to guess the song as fast as you can after listening to the clip.  It also has BBM integration, challenge all your friends and compete for the highest score.  Built in is access to the 7Digital music store, in case you want to buy songs from the artists you hear in the game.  There is also promise of a global leader board coming in an upcoming update, so you can compare your scores around the world. I have to preface this by saying that this is definitely not the idea Legends of Zelda experience but it is fun to reminisce. GameVNS has released the Legends of Zelda game in App World for BlackBerry smartphones. It uses the MeBoy nintendo simulator so the frame rate is not ideal but the game is definitely playable. Truthfully the main reason I installed it was just for the pure nostalgia of playing a series I have not seen in years.

Hopefully this game does not get yanked out of App World but you can download Legends of Zelda now at this link. Keep in mind that when you start the game you should hit the menu button and set your button mappings for the game otherwise it wont work. Let us know what you think!

PS: Anybody else think its odd that a simulator would make it past the App World reviewers?

We now have another Marmalade game for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This one is called Speedy Biker Xtreme and has you speeding across 22 tracks around the world with jumps and all. It sort of reminds me of Excite Bike from back in the day. It tries to keep the physics right with what they call “Rag doll effects” which is entertaining. Its not the most amazing racing game on the PlayBook but for the price it is definitely fun.

Electronic Arts has updated their free offering of Need For Speed: Undercover for the BlackBerry PlayBook to version 2.1. This update contains no change log, and it is theorized that it may simply be an update to prepare for the PBOS 2.0 release due in February. I have seen reports that it loads a bit faster, but no other changes have been found as yet, so if you find any differences, please post in the comments and let us know!

In case you missed it Nyan Cat is a YouTube video that became a internet sensation last year. It was a combination of a Japanese pop song together with an animated cat with the body of a poptart flying through space and leaving a rainbow trail behind. I still don’t quite get it but hey to each his own. Well now we even have a Nyan Cat BlackBerry smartphone game thanks to GameGator.

In case you have not noticed recently I am sort of hooked on puzzle games particularly sokoban games. Spice just released a free Sokoban game that promises to bring the classic Sokoban puzzle experience to the PlayBook. This Sokoban game has you are moving the boxes around the maze to get them in the right location. It has 100 built in levels for you to test your skills and enjoy.

Brain Connected let us know about their “2D Puzzle Platformer” called Somyeol that they have just ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook. The game sort of reminds me of lemmings mixed with a side scrolling platformer like Mario Bros. and has you guiding these cute Somyeol to safety and their rocket to take them home. There are a bunch of different types of Somyeol and tools you have to utilize to make your way through the obstacles. The game play is actually fun but hampered by the control mechanism which is a bit clunky and hopefully gets tweaked in the future.
