While at DevCon I was shown a demo of NBA Game Time and was impressed by watching a game recap on my BlackBerry. The app is really smooth and has some great features like live scores, game summaries, and more. The best part is that the game comes in both a free and $9.99 version so you can choose what features you want. The downside is that they app is a whopping 2.4 Megabytes which will probably keep it off most older devices.

BTW anybody else notice that EA Games released NBA Street for BlackBerry? Haven’t tried it myself yet but I definitely will be…

TwitterBerry Renamed OpenBeak

I am not sure how many people still use TwitterBerry but Adam @CrackBerry noticed that they changed their name to OpenBeak. I was just reading the latest issue of Laptop Magazine and even they featured TwitterBerry as the main Twitter client for BlackBerry. I don’t think that changing the name of the app was such a great idea after it got so much link love and press as TwitterBerry but they probably needed to change it to be accepted into App World.

New in OpenBeak 1.1:

    * New Setup Wizard
    * Choice of viewing tweets in a list view or a bubble view
    * Notification icon will clear when quitting OpenBeak

National Football Post Releases Free BlackBerry App

I am not a sports fan myself but I have heard of the National Football Post before. They partnered up with Handmark to release a free BlackBerry application for Pro-Football fans. The app gives you real-time access to NFP sports content, news, and information.

Wordpress Beta Updated – Almost There…

Quite a few of you sent in tips about Automattic updating their popular Wordpress BlackBerry client to version 0.9.0.169. They claim they are almost out of beta and I would have to agree with them. Some of these latest new updates are really slick like the ability to upload videos and the new user interface. The app is also not very responsive. Cant wait to see what they have up their sleeve next!

Urbanspoon Releases BlackBerry App – Restaurant Slot Machine

We mentioned Urbanspoon’s service a bit back but they just released a BlackBerry app at DevCon. They sent me an email that their new app lets you choose restaurants near you with a sort of slot machine for picking a favorite.

You just hit the space bar or shake your Storm and it will find a good restaurant near you buy choosing cuisine, neighborhood and price you are looking for. It also lets you simple search and browse restaurants near you using your location.

Loopt Releases Update – Adds Background Location Updating

Loopt just announced an update to their application that will add some more uses to their free application. The app will now help you find places and people nearby using background location updating. My guess is that it will always use GPS or maybe even cell tower triangulation in the background to find people and places near you.

I am not sure how badly this will hit your battery but the idea is pretty cool. The app will keep updating your location kind of like Google Maps Latitude.

Help iblipped Create a User Generated Coverage Map

iblipped is a cool little application/service spotted by Adam @Crackberry that aims to create a user generated coverage map. They provide a free application that measures coverage while using your GPS to find your location. This way they plan on creating a user generated coverage map like you can find at www.iblipped.com.

The app runs in the background but since it is using your GPS all the time along with cellular connection to upload data there may be a battery usage constraint for users so keep that in mind. On the other hand a user generated coverage map could go a long way to proving to your carrier that reception sucks for everybody in your location.

Today’s cellular phone network provider’s carrier maps are often out of date and/or inaccurate. The iBlipped site aims at gathering volunteered cell phone signal strengths to point out strengths and dead zones in cell phone providers coverage.

Gmail App Updated to v2.0.7 – No Change Log

Here is another update from Google but this time it is a bit confusing. When you head to m.google.com/mail it says the version available is 2.0.6 but if you hit the download button it gives you v2.0.7.

Jason let me know about this update on his BlackBerry 9700 and I confirmed this on my AT&T Bold 9000 and T-Mobile Bold 9700.

Google Maps Updated to v3.2.1 – No Change Log

Looks like Google just put up a quick bug fix for Google Maps. Josep let me know that you can now download Google Maps v3.2.1 from Google’s website. In typical Google fashion there is no change log so its time to play guess what Google fixed!

Vodafone Update 2.0.1 – Free Twitter & Facebook Client

The team at Widgetlabs let us know that the Vodafone Update Twitter & Facebook client we told you about before has been updated to version 2.0.1. Its a pretty solid Twitter client, though not the most powerful, but its nice to have options.

The new version 2.0.1 adds:

Copy and paste is a no brainer but its nice to see BIS connectivity has been added along with support for AutoText. It still amazes me that not all apps support AutoText. I keep on hearing complaints about Google Voice not supporting AutoText for sending SMS.

Aloqa Beta Updated – Find Interesting places & Events Near You

We mentioned Aloqa a bit back when it was in beta but it was limited to the Curve 8900 and Bold 9000. Now the app is out of Beta and is available for a broader range of devices including the Tour, 83XX series, 88XX series, 87XX series, and 8520. The app is now also feeding you information in the US, Canada, & Austria.

Aloqa supposedly lets you find interesting places, events, & friends near you. I am not sure exactly how it pulls that off but supposedly they are fed information from Facebook Connect, Yelp, Eventful, last.fm, Wikipedia, Craigslist, Topix, Fon, Coulomb Technologies, GreatDad, Google Maps API, Qype, Call-A-Bike, Nestoria, and BeLocal.

It looks like a pretty interesting app if you want to give it a spin and the price is right (free). Check it out at www.aloqa.com and let me know what you find!

Slacker Updated to v2.0.91 – Pushed To Verizon Storm2

Slacker let me know that Verizon has preloaded all their Storm2’s with a link to download Slacker. Looks like that little partnership is going well for both Verizon and Slacker. Bla1ze also spotted an update for Slacker to version 2.0.91 which sadly does not have a change log.

Still I wish Slacker would finally release an update to let you cache music on your SD card over Wi-Fi. I think it is weak that they still require you to connect a cable to your PC to cache stations…

The app kind of reminds me of SocialScope and looks quite good. It will not replace the BlackBerry Facebook client but the Twitter functionality is pretty cool. I guess it is intended for Vodafone users only but it works on my AT&T Bold…

Kisses – Free App Detects & Displays Hidden Programs & Running Processes

NightFire let me know about this free app called Kisses that looks pretty cool. With all the talk about spyware on BlackBerry I thought it would be worth mentioning. While all of this spyware requires somebody to install an application and accept 3-4 security warnings it may still be a concern for some people.

Kisses is a side project brought to you by Zensay that lets you detect and view running processes and hidden applications on your BlackBerry. It also allows you to drill down further into each program and reveal information about its vendor, download date/time, size and process id.

Pandora 1.1.2 Release Fixes OS 5.0 Issues

It has been awhile since the last Pandora update and this one is focused on OS 5.0 users. Sunkast@BBOS caught wind that Pandora has been updated to version 1.1.2. This fixes the issue where towards the end of a song Pandora would freeze and not move to the next song on OS 5.0.

From Pandora:

Good news – we just put up the new Pandora 1.1.2 update for 5.0 operating systems including Storm 9530 on 5.0 and the new Storm 9550. Other non-5.0 devices will have to wait a few days before it will be available while we finish testing, however most of the changes in 1.1.2 are to support the 5.0 OS.

BlackBerry Developer Conference Mobile Guide – Free App

Hotness! RIM has just released the BlackBerry Developer Conference Mobile Guide. The app was made by a unknown developer, Sweet Caesar Inc., which is interesting but it looks great. I hope to make it to the developer conference so I will definitely be checking this out! Let me know if you are coming too and we can meet up!

Check out the app in the App World at this link. Hopefully Sweet Caesar will realize that App World is not available in every country and release it OTA too. The Mobile Guide gives you access to schedules, maps, and bios for the whole developer conference. I guess this time RIM decided not to use Viigo for the guide.

BlackBerry Swiss Army Knife (BBSAK) 1.7 Released

The very useful, popular, and free BBSAK software has been updated yet again by RIMGeeks to version 1.7.0. This new version adds auto updates and a couple other fixes includes speed tweaks. In case you don’t know BBSAK is useful for accessing some of the more complex Javaloader.exe features like backing up your 3rd party apps or factory resetting your device.

Two BlackBerry Spying Applications – One Free & One Commercial

DavidB let me know about these two little applications that really kind of scare me. The BlackBerry is pretty impenetrable to attacks but software can be installed on a BlackBerry to let you do some pretty scary stuff.

For example, there is a FREE application called PhoneSnoop that lets you dial into the infected BlackBerry and use it as a remote bug. The application will automatically answer the phone and turn on the speakerphone letting you listen into what the victim is doing. It shows no indication that it is doing so on the BlackBerry which is kind of scary… Check it out at this link or more info at this link.

The second is called FlexiSPY pro and was featured on The Register. This app takes things one step further with its $249 price tag and lets you not only perform remote listening along with reading the infected BlackBerrys emails, SMS, call logs, and GPS location.

Crazy stuff!!! I wish RIM would let you password protect certain features on the phone like being able to install applications…

Google Voice BlackBerry App v0.1.6 Released – No Change Log

That was a quick update from Google since they just updated Google Voice 2 weeks ago. Nikolaus let me know that Google has updated Google Voice for BlackBerry to version 0.1.6 from version 0.1.5.1. Once again it is a pretty minor version bump but considering how popular Google Voice is and the features Google has been adding it is probably worth downloading.

LittleChirp – New Free BlackBerry Twitter Client Aims for Speed

Naviina let me know that they have just released a new Twitter client called LittleChirp. They admit that the market is already inundated with Twitter clients but their aim is to be the fastest and simplest Twitter client for sending tweets quickly. This is Navina’s first release and will be the first of many they plan on developing under the Mobikraft name. It supports most recent devices with the exclusion of the BlackBerry Storm for some compatibility reason.

BlackBerry Master Control Program 0.9.2 Beta 10 Released

BlackBerry Master Control Program (BBMCP) has saved my BlackBerry twice in the last 4 weeks. The developer just let me know that they have released BBMCP 0.9.2.0 beta 10 yesterday and it has quite a few new upgrades. I will let the change log speak for itself but I highly recommend downloading it. Even just to be able to backup all the applications on your BlackBerry…

From the change log:

MCP gets a major facelift! Brand new graphics for the navigation panel and installers! – Thanks Shane!!!
Save Modules now allows user to create ALX/JAD for saved modules
Added Backup & Restore for third party applications (2 clicks)
Added ALX/JAD Builder with drag & drop window for building the module list
System tray icon right click context menu updated
By default MCP minimizes to taskbar now, not the system tray (clean installs only)
Left side navigation panel reduced number of icons dramatically (it was too cluttered)
Auto PIN checking is now at 3 seconds (clean install)
OS Management: Added "Delete JVM" checkbox (if checked Application Loader will start with the /nojvm parameter which will destroy JVM on the device)
OS Management: Added "Full Wipe" checkbox (if checked Java Loader will "Wipe" the device destroying any existing IT Policies prior to the OS installation)
Navigation: Load/Erase/Save Modules used to be "hidden" under the "Java Loader" page, they are now in the main navigation area
MCP Engine updated to Java Loader 5.0.0 Beta 4

Google Maps 3.2 Released – Adds Layers to Maps

UPDATE: mallinj corrected me and let me know that there IS login support in this version!!! I just am still trying to figure out what it lets you do! Hopefully it saves your favorites…

Google has just released Google Maps 3.2 and its a pretty nice upgrade. I was really hoping they would finally tie it into your Google account but no luck. Version 3.2 brings layers to the table which are kind of like overlays on your map.

Layers are useful because you can overlay transit maps or even Wikipedia entries over a map. I was just disappointed to find that I could not get the NYC subway map to show up over Manhattan. I am really hoping Google adds that feature. If its there and I missed it let me know!

Best Buy mIQ FREE Wireless Contact, Calendar, & Media Sync

We told you previously that Best Buy was going to offer their free mIQ wireless sync solution on October 12th but totally forgot to tell you guys that it is live! I decided to give it a spin when I was checking my email and realized that this application is SLICK!

Within seconds of installing my phones contacts, calendar, text messages, and call log were backed up to the mIQ servers. It then proceeded to upload my pictures and videos all in the background. I already have a BES server backing up most of my information but the extra peace of mind is nice especially in a free application. I am a bit scared of using it to restore information to my BlackBerry but who knows it may just work.

The app lets you easily update contacts and even send text messages from their website. They do have a interesting Facebook integration where you can set your status but I don’t really see the point. I am just amazed at the level of integration that exists though I finally see what Best Buy’s stake in the whole deal is. They plan on up selling you a new BlackBerry, accessory, or memory card. The app even tells you how full your device and SDcard memory are.

In short if you trust Best Buy with your information you should check out mIQ at www.miqlive.com. What truly shocks me about this whole service is how Best Buy can create this while RIM is still struggling to setup contact sync for BIS. Are you listening RIM? Regular customers also want OTA sync (or at the very least a backup) of their information!
