At the beginning of the year RIM released v3.0 of their BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing app in the Beta Zone for the US & UK. Now they have released it out of beta though once again it is limited to the US and UK. I guess they don’t make conference calls in Canada & elsewhere?

Either way the new v3.0 of the conferencing app adds:

Thor45 let us know that Spice has released another solid game called Memory. This is Spice’s take on the classic memory game you used to play as a kid where you match the cards but is really targeted at kids though adults can also join in the fun. The coolest part is that the game is BBM connected so you can invite your friends to a game of Memory. There are multiple themes and difficulty levels to change things up.

RIM’ TAT (The Astonishing Tribe) group keeps on releasing new content packs for their slick Scrapbook app. Zach @TheBerryFix noticed that RIM has added a new Valentine’s Day theme pack to the scrapbooking app. Its a pretty slick update full of pink and hearts (I hate pink). Check it out by downloading the SrapBook for the PlayBook app free from AppWorld or if you already have it just look for more theme packs.

Trevor Nunes has updated his awesome SEGA Genesis Megadrive emulator for the BlackBerry PlayBook over the weekend. This new version adds the key rom cycling feature that I have been waiting for. It also adds some other goodies you will appreciate. It looks like Trevor is actively working on the port so hopefully more goodies are coming!

Features include:

• rom cycling!
• new gfx and gfx effects buttons
• tv icon selects scanline, blur, interlace ‘tv’ modes
• start button on right hand side of screen, top left is rom cycler …
• HQX button cycles through HQX scaling but currently not scaled, so kind of useless

As our phones continue to get more advanced each year, the other two most common items we carry on a daily basis, our keys and our wallet, don’t seem to be progressing quite as fast. Or so I thought until I stumbled upon the Keyport, an item which should interest any fan of technology and gadgets. With my keys having torn a hole in my coat pocket and items dropping into my coat’s lining, I was on the lookout for a keychain alternative especially one that would no longer scratch up my phone. I now present you with the Keyport.

At left you can see my keys prior to Keyport, and with the Keyport. As you see, the Keyport provides a much nicer look, and is more organized and compact. With a skin made from stainless steel, and at approximately 2.8 x 1.2 x .6 inches and 2 ounces, the Keyport fits nicely in your pocket and has a solid feel to it.

The Keyport is sold as an empty shell with 6 colored nodes. You are then able to assign these colored nodes to your keys or other inserts you purchase. Inserts include keys (including car keys, high security lock keys, etc), a USB drive, an LED light, a bottle opener, or a barcode insert for your store discount cards. The back end of the Keyport opens and after inserting the colored node of your preference into the key or other insert, you simply slide it into the Keyport.

Being limited to 6 slots I didn’t intend to insert any barcode inserts into my Keyport, opting to install an app on my phone to store these instead. Realizing I use 4 keys on a daily basis, I decided to go with 4 keys, a USB drive, and the LED light.

Keys: Key blanks are $5/piece. A Key Photo ID form is available on Keyport’s website. I took a photo of my keys on this form, once for each side of the keys, and uploaded it to their website. Prior to uploading I blacked out the very tips of the keys for security, as they suggest you do. Within a few hours I received an email that the proper blanks for my keys had been identified, and shortly after that the order was shipped. Once I received the Keyport, I brought the blanks to my local locksmith who charged me $10 total for the 4 keys to be cut and voila, they worked. Note that high security lock keys require you to send the key in to Keyport.

USB Drive: Keyport offers 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB USB drive options at $19, $29, and $39 respectively. The USB drive works like any other and takes up one slot in your Keyport.

LED Light: The LED light ($10) has proven to be quite bright and very useful for finding the key hole when entering my apartment, although I would give this up if needing to insert another key into my Keyport.

As previously mentioned, there is also a bottle opener and a barcode insert for store discount cards available for the Keyport.

Thoughts: While it appeared to me that too many steps were required to set up the Keyport, the process was a lot quicker and easier than I had anticipated. Taking photos of my keys and uploading the images took minutes, and Keyport identified the keys and shipped them out the same day. Having the keys copied at the locksmith was also a quick 10-minute stop. This along with the price seem to be what may cause hesitation. At $88 ($39 for the unit, $20 for 4 key blanks, $19 for the USB drive, and $10 for the LED) you may be inclined to stick to your keyring, however after the  initial setup, future keys will simply be $5 for the blank, plus a few dollars to have the copy made.

Having used the Keyport for some time now, the keys slide in and out quite smoothly and I have found using the Keyport to be really convenient. The Keyport can withstand up to 20 lbs of twisting torque, and feels strong when turning the keys in the lock. I find myself playing with the Keyport quite a bit, and showing it off a lot as well. Overall, I would recommend purchasing the Keyport for its convenience as well as it’s cool factor.

I guess good things come in twos. We just mentioned one third party Google Talk client for the PlayBook and now BBNews.pl noticed another one. Benjamin Bezine has released a free beta of his easyChat Google Talk client for the BlackBerry PlayBook today. This new app lets you easily chat with your friends on Google talk and check out their status. Not all the features are up to par but it is still in beta so hopefully they will round out.

RIM is continuing with their odd rollout of their new BlackBerry Music Store. They put out a beta in the Beta Zone for BlackBerry Music store in Canada and now they have released it in Canada and Australia (kudos to BBEmpire for noticing). This music store is powered by 7Digital and seems to simply be a rebranded version of the 7Digital app.

On the other hand RIM still has their Amazon MP3 for BlackBerry music app for users in the US, UK, Germany, and France. I am not sure what the deal is between the two but at least users of BlackBerry Music on the PlayBook (which is powered by 7Digital) can use the same account and access their 7Digital music locker between devices.

Let’s start with the Desktop Cradle.  It is a stand alone cradle that can be used with one of their cases or external batteries.  This is a huge plus, because a lot of other cradles do not offer the compatibility, with either a case or extended battery.  It also just plugs right in to your existing charge or usb cable you would use.  A little light on the back lets you know it’s plugged in, which I found to be a bit of annoyance when using it at my bedside, but on my desk was not an issue.  It is a good weight and size, the density of the cradle and as well as the 2 non slip pads on the bottom make it very stable.  If you drop your phone in from around an inch up, it lands perfectly and starts charging. It also comes with an insert plate to use without a case on your device, which is removable for when using the cradle with a supported case.  Such as the Seidio ACTIVE case.

The Seidio ACTIVE case is a great 2 piece case, which offers everyday protection for normal wear and tear.  It has a soft rubber bumper that slips on to the device, and then a hard plastic body guard that clips on to the device securing it all in place. This adds a bit of shock protection if dropped or slips out of your hands.  I do not recommend dropping it, but mine has slipped out of my hand while removing it from my pocket a couple of times, and the phone has survived quite nicely.

The case protects the device quite nicely, the case is snug, and doesn’t fall off.  The overall physical aspect does not make the phone feel bulky, and maintains the sleek profile of the phone.  The rubber gives it a very nice soft grip, when you’re holding the device, even loosely, it feels snug and secure.  The one benefit is that the volume, convenience, and lock button work perfect with the case on, unlike others were you almost have to wiggle it to get the button to work.

There are a few things I would improve on,  I would want the case to have port covers, even though it does offer good protection, it leaves the ports open for dust and lint when used in a pocket.  I would have also liked to see a camera cover; with that being one of the only openings on the back I found dust also liked the gather on the lens.  I had to clean it a few times before using it, but it was not a major hindrance as I often check the lens with or without a case on.  The last thing is not something I would change on the case, but include in the packaging. I would put in a screen protector, it isn’t a must have, but something I look for.  Now when ordering from Seidio you can always add one of their high quality screen protectors to your purchase. As well as an optional holster, I think it was smart to leave the holster out of the equation, because a lot of people are buying this case to be used in their pocket or purse.

Overall Seidio has done a great job. The week and a half I have been using a case it has been great.  And the desktop cradle also works well and it has become a new fixture on my desk.  You can get your own ACTIVE case or Desktop Cradle directly from Seidio.  The ACTIVE case comes in 4 colours as well.  If you are looking at getting the optional holster, grab the combo and save your self some money as well. I have apparently become a case freak. I really want/need my devices protected. I have 3 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and lots of opportunities for personal electronics to get knocked, dropped, dinged, scratched, scuffed, or otherwise violated. 3 of 4 phones in my house live in Otterbox Commuters. My PlayBook never leaves the house out of its OEM Convertible case.

That being said, I find that I prefer my PlayBook naked at home. The thing is just so darned comfortable as-is! Unfortunately, my paranoia has steadily grown, so I decided that a slim scuff guard of some sort was in order. Enter the Case-Mate Barely There.

The Barely There is just that. It’s a slim, semi-rigid sheath that snaps right onto the PlayBook. It’s so thin, it’s almost invisible. The box actually has the dubious tagline “Like a thong for your tablet” on the back. I’m not even kidding:

The Barely There has cut-outs for all the buttons and ports, including the dual microphones. Access to the buttons and ports is not hampered in any way due to the extreme thinness of the case, but it does add just enough bulk to prevent use of the charging dock.

It completely covers the back, top and bottom edges of the PlayBook, as well as the corners, providing adequate minimalist scuff and scratch protection. The top and bottom edges come up above the PlayBook just enough to prevent the screen from touching a flat surface if laid face-down on it, though it provides no more than a millimeter clearance. Since there’s only the barest overlap on the front edges of the device itself, bezel gestures are completely unaffected by the case.

The Barely There case, curiously, leaves the sides of your PlayBook completely open and unprotected. This is, I suppose,  a concession to the minimalist theory behind the case’s design, but in my world, danger comes from all directions, so I was disappointed by this lack of lateral protection.

I probably could have gotten over the lack of side protection, but for one glaring flaw: this case is sharp, and not in a ZZ Top kind of way. The back edges are rounded on all four sides, but every front edge of this case is sharp to the touch, making it uncomfortable to hold and shift your grip on it. The exposed sides leave a sharp edge all along the part of the PlayBook right where your hands go. Every time I reached toward the touchscreen or shifted the position in which I was holding the PlayBook, my hands or fingers caught or scraped on this uncomfortable edge. Even the front corners felt sharp, as did the thin seams around the buttons and ports. A naked PlayBook is a joy to hold; smooth, secure, and comfortable. This case makes it less so.

The Case-Mate Barely There case takes a minimalist approach to minimalist protection. It adds almost no bulk at all and provides good basic scuff protection for the back of the PlayBook, top and bottom, but leaves the sides open. You may find that its sharp front edges cause you no discomfort., but after 2 days of constantly putting the case on, getting annoyed, and taking it off again, I decided that, for me, this flaw was a deal-breaker. A case that is meant to be “barely there” should not cause a tactile distraction every time you use it. I’m sending it back and ordering an OEM soft shell.

PROS: Ultra-thin, adds no appreciable bulk, provides basic scuff protection, blends almost flawlessly into the appearance of the PlayBook, leaves ports, buttons, and bezels unhindered.

CONS: No side protection, very little, if any, impact/drop protection, sharp edges make it uncomfortable to use.

RATING: 6/10

I already had the DDPB installer ready to go on my PC, so getting my favorite SNES games on my PlayBook was as simple as this:

1. Connect the PlayBook to the PC via USB
2. Start development mode on the PlayBook
3. Frantically find SNES roms for my fave games of all time (found them all here, but google can tell you more I’m sure)
4. Download the .bar file
5. Open the DDPB installer
6. Click scan and enter your password
7. Add the .bar file (snes9x-pb-1_0_0_5.bar)
8. Click install and wait for it to complete
9. Find the icon on your PlayBook, open it and allow file access
10. Add all your favorite roms (.smc files) to the roms folder on your PlayBook
11. Enjoy hours of SNES awesomeness wherever you tote your PlayBook!!!

You have to love native SDK’s. The latest goodies are coming to us courtesy of A7omic and jtokarchuk who have together ported SNES9x, a Super Nintendo emulator by Makoto Sugano, to the BlackBerry PlayBook. They have even done all the hard work for you and compiled it into a BAR file for you to sideload onto your PlayBook ASAP. Jtokarchuk sent us the tip and screenshots of the project led by A7omic and I have to say I am excited for some serious Super Nintendo nostalgia on my PlayBook. Now all I need to do is put the control scheme to the test.

Check out A7omic’s thread on CrackBerry forums or GitHub for instructions and you can download the BAR file (just change the extension from .ZIP to .BAR) to play around. The source code and build instructions are also available. Keep in mind you will need to “acquire” ROMs somehow to be able to play SNES games! Let us know if you find some good sources. Street Fighter here I come!!!

PS: A7omic mentioned that he has submitted his app to App World but I highly doubt it will get past App World’s crack team of reviewers…

QuiteSimple has released an interesting new application called VendorTool. The free app pulls BlackBerry App World Reports and Statistics for App World vendors on their BlackBerry smartphones. Right now the interface and app are pretty simplistic but the idea is very cool. I have been telling RIM for ages that they need to offer a mobile interface to App World for vendors. Its nice to see that somebody is working on it.

I have been waiting for OverDrive to bring their OverDrive Media Console to the BlackBerry PlayBook. From what I can tell they have done it by using the new Android Player to port their Android app to PlayBook OS 2.0 so this is OS 2.0+ for now. In case you are not familiar with OverDrive they provide you access to over 18,000 libraries worldwide to get both eBooks and AudioBooks. You can check them out from Libraries nearby or even load your own ePub eBooks though I have not managed to get that to work yet.

OverDrive Media Console is definitely one of those apps that you want to have installed on your PlayBook if you have OS 2.0. You can pick up OverDrive Media Console free in App World.

Tangkap introduced me to their sweet screen capture app that is currently my favorite screenshot app on my BlackBerry. Tangkap Layer is totally free and gives you all the basic screen capture functionality you need without all of the annoyances. It allows you to set the image format you wish (JPG/PNG/GIF/BMP) along with also giving you the ability to set the image quality from 10%-100% which allows for smaller images. The other nice part is that unlike other screenshot apps there are no watermarks or logos. It also offers you the easy ability to share the screenshot over email.

I have asked Seal555 if they plan on keeping Tangkap layer free and he confirmed that they have no plans of charging for it. I also asked them to add an option to email screenshots directly from the main screenshot menu instead of having to hit share first and they plan on researching it. Now all they need is the ability to queue up screenshots and post to Twitter and I am golden.

I have been using a Sprint BlackBerry Curve 9350 on and off for the last month or so and I have to say I really am drawn to the device. It feels like RIM finally came up with a BlackBerry Curve model that didn’t have a sacrifices like a low resolution screen or no flash. They also upped the quality of the device to the point where it feels sleek. Read on to see what I mean.

On the BlackBerry Curve 9350 RIM decided to not force users to make too many compromises and actually offers benefits that even the Bold line does not have. The first thing you notice when you pick up a BlackBerry Curve 9350 (or Curve 9360 and Curve 9370 for that matter) is that the device is super thin and light. It also has a very “Curvy” design that fits beautifully in your hand. The volume control and mute buttons on the right side are perfectly placed and easy to press and the lock button on top has just the right amount of give. The keyboard is still a plastic-y Curve style keyboard but the build quality seems even better than the previous generation 9300 models. The only real complaint I have is that the call, menu, back, and end call buttons require more effort than I would like to push in.

I have to admit that I am a bit of a klutz and actually dropped this Sprint 9350 at least 4 times since I started using it and there is not even a scratch on it and no pealed off chrome like previous models. The only thing that ever happened is that the case needed to be squeezed back together once since some snap had let loose. The front of the device looks really slick and has the same sequential light on and off system as the rest of the BlackBerry 7 line. The gripes I had with the design was that they only put one convenience key on the new Curve and they flipped the MicroUSB port to face backwards from what you are used to.

One of the compromises RIM did make with the new Curve line is that the battery capacity is smaller than previous generations. (About 10% or so) I thought this was a problem since the new 800Mhz processor would eat through the battery faster but I have not noticed any real world differences. I still get through a whole day just fine.

The screen on the BlackBerry Curve 9350 is a real beauty. They finally raised the resolution from the previous 320×240 resolution on previous Curve devices to a much nicer 480×360. This is not as high as the 640×480 on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 but for the smaller screen size it looks bright and vivid. I have to say that is my favorite part of the 9350. It sort of reminds me of my old BlackBerry Curve 8300 but way improved. Its not the sharp steel lines of the 9900 but rather a sleek light plastic package with all the bells and whistles like NFC, Flash, nice Camera, etc.

The reason I delayed this review was because the first Sprint 9350 I received had some issues with random reboots that I wanted to check out before recommending the device. Sprint kindly sent me a replacement since it seems like the original phone I received was defective. I tested the new 9350 with both the stock OS and afterwards loaded a later unofficial OS from another carrier on the new device. The stock OS still had one random reboot but once I moved to the later unofficial OS the random reboots totally stopped and I am really liking the BlackBerry Curve 9350. I think that the BlackBerry Curve 9350 is the perfect classic BlackBerry experience. It gets the job done and sort of reminds me of a BlackBerry Bold 9700 that is lighter, faster, and thinner. A simple way to think of the device is as a improved BlackBerry Bold 9700 with a curve keyboard.

To wrap this all up I have to say that the amazing part about the BlackBerry Curve 9350 is that in some ways I prefer it over my BlackBerry Bold 9900 that is just sitting in a drawer for now. The lack of a touchscreen means less accidental button presses though I do miss it for web browsing. I have to say I am impressed with what RIM did with the Curve and hope Sprint will release a new OS 7.1 for the device shortly to enable even more of its features.

One of our anonymous tipsters let us know about BibbyCam becoming available on App World. The app tries to compete with Instagram by offering up 14 photo filters on your BlackBerry smartphone. It also lets you connect your account to Facebook or Twitter to share the filtered pics and like/comment on others pics.  It also has BBM connectivity if you have OS 6.1+.

I have not managed to get the app to work on my BlackBerry 9350 but a friend who tried it out said it is pretty solid for a free app. You can pick up BibbyCam for free in App World and let me know what you think!

Beat The Intro is a great new free game for your BlackBerry smartphone.  You need to guess the song as fast as you can after listening to the clip.  It also has BBM integration, challenge all your friends and compete for the highest score.  Built in is access to the 7Digital music store, in case you want to buy songs from the artists you hear in the game.  There is also promise of a global leader board coming in an upcoming update, so you can compare your scores around the world. AnV let us know that UberSocial has pushed out another update to their popular Twitter client. This one also brings some small hotfixes like they did earlier this month to v1.304. The change log for this version is:

• Loss of 3G and/or BIS connection after starting UberSocial
• Use of the carrier data plan even though BIS is specified in the configuration

UberSocial is free, but you can pay $4.99 per year to have the ads turned off. You can pick up the update directly from UberSocial or wait for it to go up on App World.

I have to preface this by saying that this is definitely not the idea Legends of Zelda experience but it is fun to reminisce. GameVNS has released the Legends of Zelda game in App World for BlackBerry smartphones. It uses the MeBoy nintendo simulator so the frame rate is not ideal but the game is definitely playable. Truthfully the main reason I installed it was just for the pure nostalgia of playing a series I have not seen in years.

Hopefully this game does not get yanked out of App World but you can download Legends of Zelda now at this link. Keep in mind that when you start the game you should hit the menu button and set your button mappings for the game otherwise it wont work. Let us know what you think!

PS: Anybody else think its odd that a simulator would make it past the App World reviewers?
