I was out at the mall yesterday, and happened to run in to an old classmate from college at the Bell store, and saw him looking at a 9780 and an Atrix. I immediately had to go and talk to him and ask what his needs and wants were for the phone, and whipped out my 9700. I obviously told him about all the pro’s and how I have had my 9700 since release and it’s been flawless, and the 9780 was an upgraded version of my great phone. How OS6 has made the BlackBerry a more competitive smartphone, and the push technology makes them excellent communication devices. Now the Atrix is a good phone as well, but showing him hands on how my 9700 worked helped him seeing the phone first hand.

I didn’t stick around to see what his decision was, but later on Facebook I got a pm with his PIN, and with this I am asking, has your BlackBerry knowledge and addiction influenced people around you to get a BlackBerry, theme, apps or accessories? I know that I now have siblings, friends, and extended family addicted… do you?

Also, with the launch of the PlayBook, have you swayed people to hold off on a tablet purchase? Have you examined the strengths and weaknesses of the PlayBook versus the Ipad (1 and 2) as well as the many Android tablets becoming available. Have you adapted to the mentality that the PlayBook is for everyone, even though RIM is pushing it as the first business oriented tablet, seeing how many of us adopted BlackBerry’s for personal devices while they are mainly business oriented.

One of the main features added in BlackBerry 6 with BlackBerry Desktop Manager 6 was the ability to sync your music over Wi-Fi. At first I thought I would love this feature until I realized that it required me to use iTunes or Windows Media Player. Personally I was just looking for a way to sync my music folder on my PC to my music folder on my BlackBerry. Nothing more and nothing less.

So I was curious how many of you use Wi-Fi Media Sync with your BlackBerry. I think RIM could make it a much more compelling option if you would also be able to synchronize your device and synchronize your pictures and documents using Wi-Fi but I dream big… Hopefully that feature is in the works.

I finally had a chance to perform a wireless OS update yesterday and was wondering how many of you have also used this feature. When it first came out I thought it could be a game changer for RIM since OS updates are risky business for newbie users and time consuming for power users.

I have to say it worked like a charm (though it took its sweet time @ ~2 hours) but I wish RIM would loosen up all the restrictions on it. For example, you should be able to update to the latest OS even if it is not released by your carrier. This is true for all BlackBerry OS updates since I have yet to understand why RIM cannot work like Apple and release an OS update to all their users. On top of that RIM should let you upgrade from any OS build to the latest not just from your carriers current OS. I doubt RIM will implement any of these changes but I have to hope… Maybe the upcoming QNX Tablet OS will be a good segue for them since the device will not be locked to a carrier.

So here is the poll:

Until today App World developers were forced to price their apps from $2.99 or up. This was arguably both a good and bad thing based on what side of the fence you sit on. Other app stores are full of 99 cent apps which leads to quite a few one trick pony apps. I used to think that the $2.99 price point was intended to promote quality apps but I may have been wrong.

RIM let us know that as of today developers will be able to price their apps at $0.99 and $1.99. This leads me to believe that the reason for the $2.99 price point was because of PayPal. Now that RIM has carrier billing and credit card billing along with the new 70/30 revenue share with developers things have changed.

So I am curious what you think of these new lower price points in App World:

Looks like RIM was serious after all on making the clamshell device; A few weeks back we saw some sketches BBleaks was able to dig up from patents for a full QWERTY clamshell device and that sketch looks just like the 9670 device BGR has posted images of. The response we got from the readers about the sketch is the same towards the leaked images of the 9670, in fact Some of you actually though it was an April fools joke when we fist posted the sketch.

I had clamshell devices before but not a big fanatic of them and looks like most of you who have something to say are not too fond of this device. If it is out in the wild it only means that we are likely to see it for sale at a carrier near you sometime this year. You can check out the full gallery at this link from BRG.

The question we like to know is, how likely are you to buy this BB once it is out ?

Now here is some odd survey news. Crowd Science did a brand loyalty survey measuring smartphone loyalty and came up with some interesting results. They found that almost 40% of BlackBerry users would prefer an iPhone as their next smartphone. That is a big number to wrap your head around. That means 2 out of every 5 BlackBerry users would rather have an iPhone. Even taking into consideration the margin of error on these kinds of surveys that number is still WAY to high.

The CEO of Crowd Science, John Martin, had this to say about the results:

These results show that the restlessness of Blackberry users with their current brand hasn’t just been driven by the allure of iPhone. Rather, Blackberry as a brand just isn’t garnering the loyalty seen with other mobile operating systems.

That spells some really bad news for RIM. We decided to see for ourselves what the results are by conducting our own poll on how many of you want to switch to a different smartphone. Let us know below:

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

We all know the devastating and widespread effects of DWI (driving while intoxicated) but many of us don’t realize how much of a problem DWT (driving while texting) has become. According to Drive Safely Corporation a recent study done by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) says that a driver’s risk of collision is 23 times greater when they are texting.

In fact VTTI recommends that texting be banned in moving vehicle for all drivers. Texting while driving kills nearly 6000 people every year in the US alone. In fact on Tuesday, January 5th of 2010 I personally witnessed a brand new sedan plow into 3 cars that were in line to exit a busy highway in NY. My vehicle was only 2 cars behind those involved in the accident. I literally saw a young lady in a new import looking at the screen of her cell phone as she drove right into the cars in front of me at nearly 50MPH. She only slammed her brake at the very last instant and there was no way for her to stop her car in under a second. Two weeks later I am still thinking ‘what if I was 2 cars ahead of where I was?’

The threat is real and it is no joke. The warnings we hear about driving while distracted are not empty what-ifs, they are warnings about what is happening everywhere, all the time. We are all at risk of being injured or killed by a distracted driver whether we are in the same vehicle, another vehicle or even pedestrians on a sidewalk.

According to Drive Safely Corp‘s website: “Cell phone related accidents result in more than $40 billion each year. As cell phone use increases among all demographics the problem will only get worse. Smartphones which are capable of texting, browsing the internet, emailing and playing videos will see a 500% growth in sales from 2008 to 2013. In the last 12 months alone, the number of people watching video on their mobile device has increased 70%.”

According to Harvard Center for Risk Analysis: Cell phone use contributes to roughly 6% of all accidents which equates to around 636,000 crashes, 330,000 injuries, 12,000 serious injuries and 2,600 deaths each year. The annual cost of crashes caused by cell phone use is estimated to be $43 billion.

The government has been looking into this epidemic for a while now. So far nearly 20 states have passed legislation that makes Driving While Texting illegal, and last year a bill was introduced by the senate that would force the remaining states to pass similar laws.

Drive Safely Corp. (DSC) claims it has the solution. Last year DSC launched a suite of products, entitled “Stay Alert Features (SAFe)”, aimed at reducing motor vehicle accidents related to distracted driving. This suite of patent-pending products is intended to prevent drivers of motor vehicles from accessing various messenger functions of their mobile phones while allowing passengers to continue to use their messenger services.

The SAFe Product Suite is comprised of several individual products, each designed for a specific purpose:

- Anti-Messaging Technology (AMT): This line of products includes Anti-Texting Technology, Anti-Email Technology and Anti-MultiMedia Technology. These are designed to disable a driver’s access to SMS texts, Emails and Multimedia (audio, video, social networking).

- Anti-Browsing Technology (ABT): This product is designed to prevent drivers from using their phones to access the internet.

How it works…
All of Drive Safely Corp.’s products in the SAFe Suite utilize Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) data to determine if the user’s mobile phone is in a moving vehicle. If it is determined that the phone is in motion a screen pops up whenever the user first attempts to access the targeted function of the phone (SMS text, MMS, e-mail, Browser, Multi-Media). For example if the driver tries to read or compose an SMS text message a screen pops up and advises the user that “Texting While Driving is Illegal,” and then asks the user: “Are you a driver?” If the user answers “YES” then texting capabilities are disabled until the phone has stopped moving for a period of time. If the user responds “NO” (not a driver) then the phone enters the Attention Validation Sequence (AVS). The Attention Validation Sequence displays randomly assigned letters, numbers and symbols on the screen. In order to avoid immediate disablement of the phone’s messenger functions the user must input the data exactly as shown in a very short period of time. I actually sat in DSC’s driving simulator and tried passing the AVS while driving at around 40MPH and trying to keep my eyes on the road, and I can tell you it seemed impossible to pass. Trust me, I’m a seasoned video-gamer so I am pretty good at giving my attention to several things at once (chatting voice with my teammates, eating my late late dinner, answering BBMs on my BlackBerry and navigating my way through burning cities while being attacked by zombies) but I could not pass the AVS and alas my texting was disabled.

So the technology works and it is coming to your cell phone soon. According to Drive Safely Corp. their software works on all cell phone platforms and they are working with all of the major cell carriers to push this software onto all phones soon. The government is on board with them and they have no competitors. Unlike other software apps that disable texting (or other activities) while the phone is in motion DSC’s SAFe Suite cannot be disabled by the user. It will be uploaded to your phone by your carrier and it will always be there to enforce its rules, like it or not.

The thought of my phone being monitored through GPS and cell tower triangulation makes me wonder about privacy issues and the fact that this cannot be disabled means you are stuck with it even if it has bugs or causes your phone to misbehave, but if this really proves to cut down significantly on deaths and injuries resulting from textually active drivers I will simply have to acquiesce.

So how do you feel about this? Feel free to sound off by taking the poll and placing comments under this post. Keep in mind that in a recent AAA study 95% of those polled thought texting while driving was unacceptable, though 18% said that they recently texted and drove. Half of the drivers aged 16-24 said they routinely texted while driving.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

UPDATE: RIM released a knowledge base article recommending that you disable Google Sync if you encounter calendar sync issue. Talk about a wonderful workaround!

Last week we ran a poll asking all of you to share your experiences with Google Sync. Over 600 readers participated in the poll and provided comments. It turns out that my friend was not alone in his issues with Google Sync.

The poll results were kind of shocking based on the fact that 32% responded that they have been having issues with Google Sync for their calendars or contacts. That is compared to only 39% who have had no problems.

Problems seem to range from bugs to programming limitations including:

Duplicate calendars after sync

Duplicate contacts if you don’t clear your BlackBerry address book first

Unable to even get it to work

No one way sync option

When you remove a calendar entry from Google Calendar it will remove it from your BlackBerry and automatically send out a cancellation notice to all the attendees

It may also remove events older that 2 weeks from your BlackBerry resulting in cancellation notices sent to all attendees

Does not correctly translate all day events

Recurring events are converted into multiple one time single events

Unable to sync to calendar other than default

Have I missed anything?

Most of the issues seem to be on the BlackBerry Tour OS. I am on a BES so I don’t really have a need for Google Sync but I decided to look into it.

Turns out that there are quite a few people having issues with the software. It has been blamed for causing everything from duplicate contacts to sending meeting cancelations randomly. This thread on BlackBerry Forums goes into quite a few of the issues.

So I decided to run this poll to see if this is a widespread issue. Please elaborate in the comments! Some of this may be alleviated in the future when RIM releases contact sync for BIS in 2.8 this month.

A little over a week ago we ran a poll asking all of you what operating system you use the most. I was curious how many people would actually be impacted by RIM releasing desktop manager for Mac. I know I have been dying to get my hands on a copy but am worried that it will not let me install another carriers OS easily…

The results of our poll were kind of odd as you can see below:

The 45% of voters that chose Mac does not jive well with me so I decided to do a bit of digging. I ran a report with a breakdown of OS’s that visitors to BerryReview have been using:

That 10% figure seems quite a bit more plausible since that is only slightly higher than Apple’s market share. Still the poll just goes to show that there are quite a few Mac users just dying to get their hands on desktop manager for Mac!

My wife purchased a aluminum Macbook for me last year as a anniversary gift (much appreciated) and I have only plugged my BlackBerry into it once. It was a suitable replacement for my trusted Lenovo x61t until I tried upgrading my Bold’s OS once with Parallels and VMware Fusion. Parallels would not work and Fusion caused a kernel panic in the middle of the upgrade bricking my device and making more work that it was worth.

Until now I have always been using my desktop PC to connect my BlackBerry when I need to but I would love to be able to use my Mac. I am no diehard Mac lover (far from it) but the comparable Lenovo laptop I wanted (ThinkPad X200) cost more than the Macbook.

So I am curious. What is the reader breakdown between Mac and PC users…

PS: Before all the alternative OS users get on my case I did not mention Linux/UNIX/etc since I doubt RIM will ever support them but who knows… I use Linux quite often and OSX is essentially just a GUI for FreeBSD.

I had a Windows Mobile device years ago that had GPS and on device maps. My BlackBerry has tons of free space on its MicroSD card just waiting for maps. It just blows my mind that my sub-$100 Mio c310x is a better GPS than my $400+ BlackBerry Bold. Both of them have similar components minus the touch screen with the Bold trumping with a faster processor and more memory!

So why am I still waiting for TeleNav, Google Maps, or BlackBerry Maps to refresh the maps on my device? Is it impossible to even cache the maps locally? The only reason I think this is not happening is because carriers are afraid of losing their $10/month navigation plans. This could easily be solved by offering a $50 one time GPS package that did not download information from the wireless network and then paying a optional monthly fee to keep the maps updated. Then at least I would not have to wait 10 seconds for my BlackBerry to download every turn… Or lose my GPS every time I go out of cell signal. It would also free up bandwidth on the carriers network.

So what do you think? Are you interested in on device maps?

Most news sources seem to agree that the BlackBerry App World is a decent first try from RIM but really needs more to make it stand out in the crowd. In a recent interview Mike Lazaridis had with Laptop Magazine (via FierceDeveloper) he said that carrier billing is something that they are working on currently for the App World as an alternative to PayPal. I find that PayPal is pretty painless here in the US but a friend of mine got me thinking. Outside of the US and a select few countries many people find it a bit of a pain to use PayPal in their local currency. In those cases carrier billing may make sense.

On the other hand I feel that carrier billing may just cause more problems. Carriers are notorious for charging crazy high transaction fees (about 50% last time I heard) compared to PayPal’s average of about 3%. Maybe if RIM could bargain down all of their carriers to a similar price point that would actually make sense. If not those fees could take a big chunk out of the commissions app developers make. Personally I can also see an alternative where RIM could act as the payment gateway for the App World just like Apple does for the iTunes store…

As a side note Lazaridis actually mentioned that the minimum $2.99 price point was actually something they came up with along with their developers. They claim that the developers said they did not feel like they were making money at anything less than that. I guess they never took a look at the $.99 apps in the iTunes store… The funny part is that he prefaces that by saying: “We needed to give them much more flexibility and freedom as to how they price their applications…”

So I am curious what do you think?

In that vein we are testing out a new comment system on BerryReview and would love to hear what you think about it. The new comment system is powered by IntenseDebate and offers quite a few more features that we did not have in our old comments. My favorite is the ability to easily reply to comments by email. Talk about a BlackBerry friendly feature!

The new comment features include:

Comment threading

Reply to comments by email – Just reply to the comment notification email to respond

Comment voting & reputation points

More streamlined look

& More!

I am really digging the reply by email feature since it lets me easily respond to questions from my BlackBerry. I highly recommend checking it out! During this test period you may run into a couple of bugs. Please point them out to us if you run into them.

Let us know what you think of the new comments in the poll below:

Greg asked all of you what OS based device you would switch to if RIM & the BlackBerry were no longer a viable option.

The shocking part is that the unreleased and just announced Google Android OS (1st) beat out the Apple iPhone OS (2nd) by 1 vote even though both had 29% each. Windows Mobile surprisingly came in third with only 19%.

Symbian came in 4th with 6% and Palm took last with 5%. The funny part is that 12% voted that live would no longer hold any meaning if the BlackBerry ceased to exist.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

I will let you draw your own conclusions from the results but feel free to sound off in the comments. All I can say is that I am shocked to see readers so disillusioned with the competition that they would rather a unreleased/untested OS compared to WM or Palm.

For awhile I have wondered if most BerryReview Readers are running their device on a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) or they only use BIS (BlackBerry internet server). BES has traditionally been for corporate users and BIS has been targeted towards BIS users. We posted a FAQ article earlier this week detailing the differences between BES & BIS.

I know many people use BIS for their personal email along with their BES so I made sure to include that option in the poll. I have also added BPS (BlackBerry Professional Server) & BlackBerry Unite! to the mix just so we get a full accounting. Let me know if I missed any options in the comments. We just want to know what percentage of BerryReview readers are running what BlackBerry service on their device. That way we can better understand our readers.

My hypothesis is that about 30% of readers are on a BES with 65% just using the default BIS for their emails. I would put the other 5% in others such as BPS and Unite! At least that is what I have been assuming until now.

So let me know if I am wrong!

When Greg floated the idea for this poll I was very interested to see what the results would show. I am personally paying about $135 for me and my wife on AT&T compared to the $90 we used to pay on T-Mobile.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

Out of almost 500 readers who answered the poll I was glad to see that I am not alone in paying more than $100 a month. Over 35% of responders are paying anywhere from $100-$300. The largest group seems to be where I fit in with 25% of responders paying $100-$150. The next largest group, 24%, is paying $80-$100. I wonder if they are T-Mobile users…

18% of respondents are managing to clock their bills between $60-$80 which is kind of envious… Though it is not as lucky as the 8% of readers who have their company foot the bill. I actually thought that number would be larger.

On a side note. What percentage of your bill is made up of taxes and regulatory recovery fees… Mine is around 15-20%.

We ran a poll over a week ago asking you about your opinion about cell phone warranties. I thought the results were pretty interesting due to the fact that a good portion (30%) of the respondents are paying their carrier for an extended warranty. On the other hand 42% are just fine with RIM’s standard 1 year warranty that comes with most BlackBerrys. I personally found that AT&T and T-Mobile are really good in fulfilling the manufacturers warranty (within the first year) but they do usually send you a refurbished device in exchange for yours.

17% of the poll agree with me in thinking that warranties are a waste of money/time. It makes me wonder if people are against the fact that you have to go through your carrier to redeem the warranty or because there are too many restrictions. Only 5% of responders thought that cellphone warranties are currently too expensive and another 5% found that 3rd party warranties were a better bet.
