Poll Results: Google Sync Issues? You Are Not Alone

UPDATE: RIM released a knowledge base article recommending that you disable Google Sync if you encounter calendar sync issue. Talk about a wonderful workaround!

Last week we ran a poll asking all of you to share your experiences with Google Sync. Over 600 readers participated in the poll and provided comments. It turns out that my friend was not alone in his issues with Google Sync.

The poll results were kind of shocking based on the fact that 32% responded that they have been having issues with Google Sync for their calendars or contacts. That is compared to only 39% who have had no problems.

Problems seem to range from bugs to programming limitations including:

Duplicate calendars after sync
Duplicate contacts if you don’t clear your BlackBerry address book first
Unable to even get it to work
No one way sync option
When you remove a calendar entry from Google Calendar it will remove it from your BlackBerry and automatically send out a cancellation notice to all the attendees
It may also remove events older that 2 weeks from your BlackBerry resulting in cancellation notices sent to all attendees
Does not correctly translate all day events
Recurring events are converted into multiple one time single events
Unable to sync to calendar other than default

Have I missed anything?

Poll: Are You Using Google Sync? How Reliable is it?

Recently I have had a few friends complain to me that Google Sync (m.google.com/sync) is screwing up their contacts and calendars. Most of the issues seem to be on the BlackBerry Tour OS. I am on a BES so I don’t really have a need for Google Sync but I decided to look into it.

Turns out that there are quite a few people having issues with the software. It has been blamed for causing everything from duplicate contacts to sending meeting cancelations randomly. This thread on BlackBerry Forums goes into quite a few of the issues.

So I decided to run this poll to see if this is a widespread issue. Please elaborate in the comments! Some of this may be alleviated in the future when RIM releases contact sync for BIS in 2.8 this month.

Poll Results: Are You a Mac OSX or a Windows PC User?

A little over a week ago we ran a poll asking all of you what operating system you use the most. I was curious how many people would actually be impacted by RIM releasing desktop manager for Mac. I know I have been dying to get my hands on a copy but am worried that it will not let me install another carriers OS easily…

The results of our poll were kind of odd as you can see below:

The 45% of voters that chose Mac does not jive well with me so I decided to do a bit of digging. I ran a report with a breakdown of OS’s that visitors to BerryReview have been using:

That 10% figure seems quite a bit more plausible since that is only slightly higher than Apple’s market share. Still the poll just goes to show that there are quite a few Mac users just dying to get their hands on desktop manager for Mac!

Poll: Are You a Mac OSX or a Windows PC User?

With RIM’s recent announcement about BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac I started wondering how many people will care. My wife purchased a aluminum Macbook for me last year as a anniversary gift (much appreciated) and I have only plugged my BlackBerry into it once. It was a suitable replacement for my trusted Lenovo x61t until I tried upgrading my Bold’s OS once with Parallels and VMware Fusion. Parallels would not work and Fusion caused a kernel panic in the middle of the upgrade bricking my device and making more work that it was worth.

Until now I have always been using my desktop PC to connect my BlackBerry when I need to but I would love to be able to use my Mac. I am no diehard Mac lover (far from it) but the comparable Lenovo laptop I wanted (ThinkPad X200) cost more than the Macbook.

So I am curious. What is the reader breakdown between Mac and PC users…

PS: Before all the alternative OS users get on my case I did not mention Linux/UNIX/etc since I doubt RIM will ever support them but who knows… I use Linux quite often and OSX is essentially just a GUI for FreeBSD.

Poll: Do You Want a GPS App With On Device Maps?

I really do not understand what the holdup is. I had a Windows Mobile device years ago that had GPS and on device maps. My BlackBerry has tons of free space on its MicroSD card just waiting for maps. It just blows my mind that my sub-$100 Mio c310x is a better GPS than my $400+ BlackBerry Bold. Both of them have similar components minus the touch screen with the Bold trumping with a faster processor and more memory!

So why am I still waiting for TeleNav, Google Maps, or BlackBerry Maps to refresh the maps on my device? Is it impossible to even cache the maps locally? The only reason I think this is not happening is because carriers are afraid of losing their $10/month navigation plans. This could easily be solved by offering a $50 one time GPS package that did not download information from the wireless network and then paying a optional monthly fee to keep the maps updated. Then at least I would not have to wait 10 seconds for my BlackBerry to download every turn… Or lose my GPS every time I go out of cell signal. It would also free up bandwidth on the carriers network.

Poll: Do You Care About Billing VIA Your Carrier in the App World?

Most news sources seem to agree that the BlackBerry App World is a decent first try from RIM but really needs more to make it stand out in the crowd. In a recent interview Mike Lazaridis had with Laptop Magazine (via FierceDeveloper) he said that carrier billing is something that they are working on currently for the App World as an alternative to PayPal. I find that PayPal is pretty painless here in the US but a friend of mine got me thinking. Outside of the US and a select few countries many people find it a bit of a pain to use PayPal in their local currency. In those cases carrier billing may make sense.

On the other hand I feel that carrier billing may just cause more problems. Carriers are notorious for charging crazy high transaction fees (about 50% last time I heard) compared to PayPal’s average of about 3%. Maybe if RIM could bargain down all of their carriers to a similar price point that would actually make sense. If not those fees could take a big chunk out of the commissions app developers make. Personally I can also see an alternative where RIM could act as the payment gateway for the App World just like Apple does for the iTunes store…

As a side note Lazaridis actually mentioned that the minimum $2.99 price point was actually something they came up with along with their developers. They claim that the developers said they did not feel like they were making money at anything less than that. I guess they never took a look at the $.99 apps in the iTunes store… The funny part is that he prefaces that by saying: “We needed to give them much more flexibility and freedom as to how they price their applications…”

So I am curious what do you think?

Here at BerryReview we are always trying to encourage conversations between and with our readers. Poll Results: Alternative To BlackBerry

Greg ran a great poll a little over a week ago and I thought others would be interested in the results. Greg asked all of you what OS based device you would switch to if RIM & the BlackBerry were no longer a viable option.

The shocking part is that the unreleased and just announced Google Android OS (1st) beat out the Apple iPhone OS (2nd) by 1 vote even though both had 29% each. Windows Mobile surprisingly came in third with only 19%.

Symbian came in 4th with 6% and Palm took last with 5%. The funny part is that 12% voted that live would no longer hold any meaning if the BlackBerry ceased to exist.

I will let you draw your own conclusions from the results but feel free to sound off in the comments. All I can say is that I am shocked to see readers so disillusioned with the competition that they would rather a unreleased/untested OS compared to WM or Palm.

Poll: Are You Using BES Or Do You Only Have BIS?

For awhile I have wondered if most BerryReview Readers are running their device on a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) or they only use BIS (BlackBerry internet server). BES has traditionally been for corporate users and BIS has been targeted towards BIS users. We posted a FAQ article earlier this week detailing the differences between BES & BIS.

I know many people use BIS for their personal email along with their BES so I made sure to include that option in the poll. I have also added BPS (BlackBerry Professional Server) & BlackBerry Unite! to the mix just so we get a full accounting. Let me know if I missed any options in the comments. We just want to know what percentage of BerryReview readers are running what BlackBerry service on their device. That way we can better understand our readers.

My hypothesis is that about 30% of readers are on a BES with 65% just using the default BIS for their emails. I would put the other 5% in others such as BPS and Unite! At least that is what I have been assuming until now.

So let me know if I am wrong!

As a purely hypothetical question (and more out of morbid curiosity); If RIM were to foreclose tomorrow and BlackBerry devices were no longer available, which platform/device OS would you go with? Poll Results: Average BlackBerry/Cell Phone Bill

When Greg floated the idea for this poll I was very interested to see what the results would show. I am personally paying about $135 for me and my wife on AT&T compared to the $90 we used to pay on T-Mobile.

Out of almost 500 readers who answered the poll I was glad to see that I am not alone in paying more than $100 a month. Over 35% of responders are paying anywhere from $100-$300. The largest group seems to be where I fit in with 25% of responders paying $100-$150. The next largest group, 24%, is paying $80-$100. I wonder if they are T-Mobile users…

18% of respondents are managing to clock their bills between $60-$80 which is kind of envious… Though it is not as lucky as the 8% of readers who have their company foot the bill. I actually thought that number would be larger.

On a side note. What percentage of your bill is made up of taxes and regulatory recovery fees… Mine is around 15-20%.

Poll Results: Opinions On Cellphone Warranties

We ran a poll over a week ago asking you about your opinion about cell phone warranties. I thought the results were pretty interesting due to the fact that a good portion (30%) of the respondents are paying their carrier for an extended warranty. On the other hand 42% are just fine with RIM’s standard 1 year warranty that comes with most BlackBerrys. I personally found that AT&T and T-Mobile are really good in fulfilling the manufacturers warranty (within the first year) but they do usually send you a refurbished device in exchange for yours.

17% of the poll agree with me in thinking that warranties are a waste of money/time. It makes me wonder if people are against the fact that you have to go through your carrier to redeem the warranty or because there are too many restrictions. Only 5% of responders thought that cellphone warranties are currently too expensive and another 5% found that 3rd party warranties were a better bet.

Poll; How much is your BlackBerry costing you ?

Do you dread that time of month when that cell phone/BlackBerry bill is due to show up in your letterbox ? (or inbox – as is an option for many carriers these days).

If you’re anything like me then your bill would have been cut considerably since using a BlackBerry. (I dropped down from an average of $450 – $600 per month to $79 on a capped unlimited BIS plan)

So what is you average cell phone/BlackBerry plan bill per month ? (I know this will vary widely as we are spread across many different carrier and countries but it would be interesting to see the ‘norm’).

I have seen some ludicrous examples of extreme phone bills on several news and current affairs programs in the past. One was racked up by a 13 year old to the tune of $24 000 (Mum and Dad would be proud… )

Poll: What Is Your Opinion About Cell Phone Warranties?

After reading an article on Woot about extended warranties I thought it would be a great idea to see how everybody felt about cell phone warranties. Personally the limited warranty from RIM has always been just fine but I tend to shirk all warranty offers especially from pushy sales reps. Especially after reading articles like this one on BankRate listing 10 reasons why you should not insure your cell phone. On the other hand I know quite a few people who pay about ~$5 a month for the added cell phone coverage from their carrier. I also know a few people who purchased 3rd party warranties for their devices.

So I have to ask. How do you feel about cell phone warranties/coverage plans? If you feel like I missed an option in the poll feel free to suggest it in the comments.

Poll Results: Interest In Mobile TV Is Not Promising

We asked you last week what you think of mobile TV and the results are in. It turns out that TV on your BlackBerry is a very segmented market. It is interesting to note that less than 5% of responders actually watch TV on their BlackBerry and enjoy it.

Almost 45% of responders are indifferent to mobile TV while 26% think it is too expensive and would be interested if it were free. It is interesting to note that there is a healthy interest (23%) in SlingPlayer for BlackBerry but that application has yet to materialize. A fifth of responders were hoping for some sort of free broadcast television for the BlackBerry such as DMB but that technology has yet to mature in the US thought it might be interesting internationally. 13% of responders already copy TV shows manually onto their BlackBerry. I am sure they are as excited as I am about the upcoming DivX support on the Bold.

This seems to confirm Don Reisingers sentiments about Mobile TV being dead in the water. Its a shame since I always wanted to have a TV in my pocket. I even owned one of those Dick Tracy watch TV’s back in the day.

All of us here at BerryReview love our BlackBerry’s, in one way or another. I myself love my BlackBerry for countless reasons. Enough to write all over my hand at least . There have been other loves, but they weren’t true.

I haven’t posted here in several months due to the fact I was without the internet. But my BlackBerry kept me going. I was able to do anything I needed to (except post here). With six different email accounts being pushed to my berry, I could stay connected with everyone I know.

Poll: What Do You Think About Mobile TV?

I have always envied Koreans since they get to watch TV anywhere using their cellphones. I think it would be pretty cool to watch TV on my BlackBerry while sitting on the train. On the other, hand mobile TV has yet to even make a dent in the US. MobiTV just announced that they have 4 million subscribers so I guess somebody is using it. I tried the re-branded MobiTV service on a Sprint 8330 and it worked quite well even though it was slightly grainy and slow to load. However, the pricing for Sprints TV service was way out of my range for casual use and the pricing structure was truly confusing.

There are also already 3 completely incompatible mobile TV technology standards that I know of currently including DMB, DVB-T, and MediaFLO on top of the companies like MobiTV that stream it over the internet. Toshiba has already thrown in the towel in Europe with regards to mobile TV in Europe and Nokia is wondering when it will ever take off. I think Don Reisinger summed up the whole situation well in his Mashable article titled “Why Mobile TV is a total waste of time.”

Still, the upcoming SlingPlayer application has me excited since it would mean that I could watch regular cable on my BlackBerry. That is, if the application is ever released (more on that in another post).

So I have to ask. Are you interested in mobile TV or you just couldn’t care any less about it? If so, what flavor of mobile TV are you interested in?

Poll Results: What Secondary Feature Do You Use Most

Last week, we asked you what secondary feature you used the most on your BlackBerry. We asked you to ignore the basic features such as email, calendar, and other PIM tasks and focus outside of the core BlackBerry feature set. The results are in (over 500 responses) and I find them quite interesting.

First of all, Web browsing took the crown in the poll with 29% of the vote. This most likely means that the upcoming full HTML browser in the Bold will be a big hit. RSS readers took second place with a thin margin at 18%. This truly surprised me. I guess Viigo and FreeRange are doing something right! Instant messaging took close third with 18%. This clearly spells it out for RIM. They need to get their act together and release ALL their clients on ALL carriers. GPS mapping came out 4th with 14% of the vote. It shows that GPS & Google mobile maps are truly a hit on the BlackBerry.

On the other hand, I was surprised to see that the BlackBerry media player and Facebook/Flickr came in 5th & 6th. The media player & Facebook were RIM’s big selling points to consumers. What happened? Document editing & creation took last with only 1% of the vote. Maybe Documents To Go will rectify this soon when everybody has OS 4.5.

Poll Results: Verizon Will Cripple The Thunder

It was interesting to see the results of the poll we ran a bit back. We asked you “What will Verizon cripple in the upcoming touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder/9500/Storm?”

Turns out that there is almost no doubt in over 95% of of our readers minds that Verizon will do their best to cripple some of the features in the Thunder. I think the most interesting fact is the lack of faith in Verizon. I did not do this poll to bash on Verizon. Rather it was done to point out that Verizon is doing a disservice to their customers by limiting features that other carriers offer for free on near identical devices.

Poll: How Will Verizon Cripple The BlackBerry Thunder?

Over the last few weeks, we have been hearing quite a bit about the upcoming BlackBerry Thunder. The point that many people, including myself, have glossed over is the fact that it is coming to Verizon.

Verizon is notorious for trying to monetize every feature on their phones. If they can’t monetize it, they try to cripple it. It’s part of their motto. They even cover behind the party line of “protecting the security and privacy of its customers.” They started it with Bluetooth and now they are currently doing it with GPS. Even if you pay them $10 a month, you still can’t access your device’s GPS without VZnavigator.

So this just begs the question: what will Verizon do to RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry device? Will RIM have the balls to tell Verizon to back off? We want to know what you think…

Poll Results: What BlackBerry do you have your heart set on?

On Thursday last week we published the first BerryReview poll asking everybody what BlackBerry they have their heart set on. Well a total of 663 of you have spoken and the results are in.

I was shocked when I saw that the Bold won with 50% of the vote. I know I have my heart set on the bold but I thought it would at least have some competition. Even the much touted touchscreen Thunder ate its dust with only 26% of the vote.

The truly surprising part is that more readers voted to stick with their current BlackBerry (12%) over the Javelin (10%) and KickStart (2%). I guess the Bold truly is the ultimate convergence device. I know we have been hearing about this BlackBerry 9000 device for over a year now but now there will truly be one berry to rule them all. (At least for now )
