Users of DropBox get a bit more BlackBerry support. DropBox is a free or paid online storage and backup service similar to others you may have heard of such as Mozy. From your desktop they offer Web support and a great PC/MAC/Linux app to manage your online files. DropBox recently released an iPhone app and has announced on their forums to be working on a BlackBerry app.

In the meantime they have done two things to support their BlackBerry base. 1) A new mobile site is pretty BlackBerry friendly, and can be accessed at www.getdropbox.com/m. 2) DropBox has released homescreen shortcut icons which you can get OTA.

If you don’t have a DropBox account you can signup here for 2 GB free. Sign up your friends to get even more GBs for free.

Bla1ze over @Crackberry spotted the USPS’s new mobile website that actually looks quite useful. I still have horrible memories of tracking packages on their desktop website from my BlackBerry browser so this is a breath of fresh air.

The new mobile site gives you access to track your packages and look up zip codes and USPS locations. Very useful for when you are tracking a package on the go. It also looks like they are working on future revisions that take advantage of GPS and more.

Check out the site at m.usps.com and don’t forget to bookmark it!

As they call it “here’s the really cleaver bit!” For some countries referred to as the 50 “Rebtel Countries” you can talk for FREE by calling your contact, staying on the line while they hang up and call you back on the caller ID number displayed on their phone. Rebel knows you’re still on the line, and connects the two of you back up, and now you’re both dialed into “local” numbers, and the call is FREE. I’ve tried this and it works. To be fair, some countries don’t have a lot of local numbers, so it depends on domestic long distance charges to that number. If you live in a major city anywhere you should be good.

I have found the customer service, and billing accuracy top notch! What really got me about other providers was the little cheating here and there on the pennies, but that can add up. Also don’t worry about running out of minutes, because you can setup your account for automatic $10 top-ups, for which you receive a an instant receipt e-mailed to you. Top-ups can occur during the phone call, do you are never disconnected.

BlackBerry: Where would we be without mentioning our beloved? On the BlackBerry (or lesser phone) just take your browser to m.rebtel.com/myrebtel.aspx and see all your Rebtel Contacts. Click the links to call directly. Need to add a new contact on the go? Do it here as well! No word yet on a BlackBerry app from Rebtel.

Importantly, when you just want to call a foreign number once, such as to confirm a hotel reservation, just “double dial” which is “Rebtel speak” for calling your local Rebtel number, enter your registered phone number and PIN, then select “Double Dial.” You dial the foreign number directly, which frees you and Rebtel from having to create a local number for every foreign number you want to call.

Once registered, you can invite friends/family for Rebtel credit. If you’d like to be kind enough to list me as referring you, let me know, but no obligation to do so!!

Conclusion: I used to pay $0.055 for terrible service to Brazil with Dial55.com, and now I pay $0.015 to Brazil (73% savings) for amazing, friendly, convenient service.

I just like how this new version loads much faster on my BlackBerry browser. I think it does not have as many heavy scripts. The problem is that it does not have as many options as the full browser version… It also makes you go through multiple pages… Not sure if I like that as a tradeoff. It looks like it was designed more for dumbphones than smartphones even though they claim it was designed to support the iPhone, Android, Palm Pre, & Kindle. Its interesting how the BlackBerry browser was conspicuously left off that list… It also only has a “Go” button and not a regular “Search” button. I also could not get images to show up.

RIM is really vague about what the U2 connection will be for the Tour but they have put up a new 60 second advertisement along with the teaser we told you about before. You can find it at www.blackberry.com/u2.

The beautiful part is that it looks like RIM is learning. That same link is also mobile friendly! That means you can stream and download the videos from your BlackBerry browser. I have never seen RIM do this before so that is impressive and the video quality is much better than YouTube.

You can also register for the U2 Mobile Album whatever that means. I am hoping that RIM ships the Tour with some U2 ringtones or maybe even this whole Mobile Album already preloaded…

The mini-site prominently links you to Access 360 which is not a mobile site which is kind of odd. Maybe that is the application RIM will release for this promotion?

Now Shmully let me know that they have changed it to Microsoft Bing search which makes sense.

I just find it interesting that RIM has decided to put Google, Live, Wikipedia, and Dictionary.com in the latest GoTo… screen in the browser. I wonder if Google is paying RIM to put it there like they do in Firefox? I just noticed Live Search got added to the RIM screen recently since I do not remember it being there from the beginning. The main annoyance I have with RIM’s implementation of the search screen is that it takes you to the desktop version of Google and not the mobile version.

So I am curious. What search engine do you use on your BlackBerry? Bing? Google? Google Mobile? How do you access it? (Google app/Browser Homepage/bookmark/etc.)

It turns out that since then Newegg has actually released a mobile version of their website at m.newegg.com. This is awesome for me since I can now compare prices on Amazon and Newegg before I pick something up in the store.

The mobile version seems to have access to all the same products but is not meant for browsing. You have 10 categories but they just take you to the top 10 deals in each category which sucks. The search feature works but there is no drill down like you have on the main site. You can view only the first image of the product and the specifications. What really annoyed me is that you can see the rating of the product but you cannot read the reviews!!! You do have access to login and check your order status along with your wish list.

As I said in the title the mobile site is useful for searching for a product but Newegg really limited the features to the point where most people will just wait until they get to a computer.

It used to be that you were out of luck if you wanted to check your reservation from your BlackBerry without calling. Usablenet just let me know that they have mobilized the Hyatt Hotels & Resorts website with these features:

Find and book a hotel by location

Hyatt special offers

View or cancel a reservation

Web check in and check out

Access Hyatt’s Yatt’it travel tips by country

Access for Gold Passport members including joining the program

In short the mobile site gives you full access to the Hyatt website. You can check it out by going to www.hyatt.com from your BlackBerry or directly at www.hyatt2go.com.

They are rolling out this new package in New York suburbs where they serve for $99. I still can’t believe I am paying Time Warner $44.95/month for 6mbps.

Cablevision let me know that they have gone a step further recently with mobilizing their website portal with:

Access to Optimum Online e-mail anywhere on any Web-enabled device, including the ability to read, reply, forward, and compose e-mails, as well as read attached files.

Traffic incidents in real time for the New York metropolitan area, searchable by location, plus mass transit information including the LIRR, NJ Transit, and Metro North. (Powered by News 12)

iO Digital Cable TV listings

Business and services by location (e.g. Gas Stations, Banks, ATM’s, Pizza)

Movies listings and theaters by location

Weather information

If you are their customer you <strike>have earned my jealousy</strike> can access the mobile site at www.optimum.net from your BlackBerry, which will automatically redirect to the mobile site. For most of the features you need to login with your Optimum ID and password so if you are not a customer its kind of useless. The mobile site can also be access directly at m.optimum.net in your browser.

I wonder if Time Warner will ever release mobile TV listings…

We have mentioned Keytoss quite a few times on BerryReview as a great customizable mobile homepage for your BlackBerry. They just let me know that they have released an update that integrates their service with Hotels.com. The new service lets mobile users search for hotels and make reservations online at over 85,000 hotels worldwide. They have also added mapping, a currency calculator, & flight status by route to the features of the mobile portal.

Check it out from your BlackBerry at h.keytoss.com

Global location search
KeyToss has combined the powerful Google geocoding service with massive country-specific databases from GeoNames, allowing users to use a text field to specify locations nearly anywhere in the world: neighborhood names, addresses, postal codes, and landmarks, as well as cities, airports, and geo-coordinates.

Geolocation
Many smartphones are able to determine approximate location, based on either a built-in GPS chip, or a calculation of nearest cell-towers. KeyToss allows users of certain phones to use this location data to search for nearby hotels. The KeyToss interface for Google Gears geolocation, which is available on Windows Mobile, Android, and Opera Mobile for WM, was introduced to beta testers last month. The iPhone geolocation tool, which requires the Alocola application, and the BlackBerry geolocation tool, which works with recent devices, are currently available for testing. A geolocation interface for the new Palm Pre will be available when it is launched.

Flexible date input
KeyToss has developed a very flexible parsing engine optimized for the mobile interface. Dates can be entered in nearly any format. For example, if today is Thursday, April 23, the following would all be accepted for a check-in date of Saturday, April 25 (along with dozens of other variations):
‘25 Apr’, ‘4/25’, ‘4-25’, ‘4.25’, ‘4,25’, ‘4 25’, ‘2 days’, ‘2’, ‘saturday’, ‘sat’, ‘sa’, ‘the day after tomorrow’, and ‘dumb movie’.
The check-out date is similar, except that an input of a number of days (or nights) is relative to the check-in date. Some other possible inputs include ‘2 weeks’, ‘1 month’, ‘8/29 + 6 days’, and ‘good movie’.
By default, the check-in date is set for the current day, while the check-out date is set for the following day.

Secure online wallet
Payment input and security are major barriers to mobile commerce. The mobile hotel reservation service takes advantage of the KeyToss account platform to allow customers to enter and save credit card information using a PC. The KeyToss Secure Wallet saves only the card number and contact information, reducing most of the information that needs to be input on the phone. At the time of the transaction, the customer can enter the expiration date and card security value, along with the account password.

Maps
Customers can preview the locations of hotels on Google Maps, and measure the distance from a hotel to any other location. The maps are clickable for zooming and moving, and customers can also switch to satellite view.

Image galleries
Over a million pictures of hotels and rooms are available for browsing through an easy-to-use photo viewing tool, custom-made for the mobile browser.

Multiple search profiles
People have different search criteria depending on their specific travel situation. Someone traveling on business might conduct a different type of hotel search from when that same person travels with family. As another convenience, KeyToss allows users to save multiple sets of search preferences.

Flexible output
While KeyToss was originally developed for smartphones, which typically have larger screens than the more common feature phones, the new hotel interface allows users to turn off images and display hotel content in a more compressed format.

Hotels.com best rate guarantee
All prepaid hotel reservations are guaranteed to be the best price by Hotels.com.

I can’t say for sure how prevalent it is outside of New York but I know people who use it here every day. Many companies have it tied directly into their employees expense accounts so they don’t need to file a expense report.

Both my wife and my best friend let me know that SeamlessWeb just launched a mobile portal to their website wit the help of Usablenet. Now you can find restaurants and order food on the go. All they need is a homescreen shortcut and they can get themselves in the App World… and RIM can tout how innovative of an application it is.

You can access it from your BlackBerry browser at www.seamlessweb.com

From the email they sent out:

Hunger often rears its head in inconvenient places — the back of a cab, the conference room during a meeting, or maybe on the walk home after a long day. Well, today we strike back!

The next time hunger strikes and you’re away from your computer, just pull out your mobile device and head to www.seamlessweb.com. Our slick new mobile interface will make it super-easy for you to place SeamlessWeb orders from your Blackberry, iPhone, or smartphone.

We’ve been using it internally for a few weeks and it’s already changed the way we eat:

Ordering breakfast on the way to the office in the morning? Done.

Ordering dinner for the family from a cab on the way home? Easy-peasy.

Mid-day meeting running long when your stomach reminds you that you haven’t eaten lunch yet? Discreetly place your mobile order and the food will be waiting on your desk when the meeting is finally finished.

Try the new SeamlessWeb mobile site and bookmark it on your mobile device for future orders!

What that means to you will depend a lot on a number of factors:

- Are you male or female?
- Do you think it’s OK to buy lingerie online or do you absolutely make a point of buying that sort of thing in person?
- How much do you care about your underwear?

We will look into all of these issues. There is something interesting here for everyone.

If you are male, there is absolutely no reason for you to ignore this Web site. Believe me, it’s a very beautiful Web site. I am pretty sure that many guys wouldn’t mind spending a long time admiring all the beauty of design that has so evidently been put into every corner of this site: the classy fonts, the smart style sheets, the tasteful backgrounds, the luscious buttons and the impeccable forms. Personally, I just wish every Web site were as beautiful as this one.

Oh, and the usability. A lot can be said of Victoria’s Secret mobile site’s usability. After all, this is a mobile site. One very good thing about BerryReview ourselves is how much we care about the mobile readers. How could we not, it’s about the BlackBerry, our readers value mobility more than any others. I think it’s very important that a company, outlet or organization understand the importance of catering to this blossoming market. It’s good to see that more and more companies are learning that. Last week, Luis wrote about Amazon’s BlackBerry app. This one here isn’t an app, but it’s a very functional mobile site. Victoria’s Secret has nothing to do with mobile devices, but nearly everyone is using mobile devices nowadays, so they are covering this ground as well and I applaud them for that.

If you are male, you may also find this site very useful for buying gifts, especially in a pinch. In case you don’t have time to run by a brick and mortar store to get a nice gift for your beloved one, you can just choose and buy right it from your BlackBerry. I recommend choosing it personally, but I know that is not always possible. Keep reading and I will tell you a little more about buying at this site.

Last, but not least, if you are male you still can buy something nice here for yourself. Why not? We’re not here to judge.

If are you female, it’s all the more obvious. You can buy your own lingerie in the most convenient possible way: online and without a desktop! The mobile site catalog is not very thorough, you may miss a few items that are only available from the more complete desktop version of the site, but this one still has many beautiful items. Buying at the mobile site is very straightforward: they have put no obstacles here, just relevant information and a good measure of pictures so that you know what you are buying. If you choose bras, for example, you get two pages of items. Once you choose one, you have instant access to a lot of specific information about that one item: design, fabric, straps, lining, available sizes and colors and a few other details I had never even heard about – but you certainly know them well if you buy bras regularly. If you like what you see, you can just add it to your shopping basket just like in any other e-commerce site. When you think you’ve bought enough items, you check out.

The amount of information that Victoria’s Secret has put into the site reminds me of an important issue: do women really buy their lingerie online? Is the amount of information really enough or do they prefer to see it live and make sure it is exactly what they want? I didn’t waste my time just wondering and guessing, I went straight to the source: the women. I ran a quick poll among eight of them I could reach quickly, very far from what could be deemed a "scientific" approach, but it was enough to surprise me: I thought all of them would be especially fussy about this, but it turns out only two of them refused to buy their lingerie online. All the others buy online and buy regularly. And there is more, seven of them mentioned Victoria’s Secret immediately! Which brings me to the last question: how much do you care about your underwear? Well, women certainly do a lot, and it seems to me that Victoria’s Secret knows that very well. It seems to be a very strong brand indeed. Excuse me if you buy regularly and are saying "Duh!" This is all pretty new to me. Victoria’s Secret goes yet a little further with the mobile site and offers other products and services. Like I said, this mobile site is a great place if you’re planning to give someone a gift, and if you think you’re not qualified to choose for any one reason, you can buy a gift card. Just open their Home page, it’s right there in the first link. There is also a "store locator" feature. If you absolutely insist on buying your lingerie in person, at least this mobile site can help you find the nearest store in your area so you don’t waste your time looking for it or shopping at another store across town when there is one two corners down and you just weren’t aware of it. That, in my opinion, is the absolute least that every store should have in their mobile sites.

Victoria’s Secret mobile site also offers some kind of service I could not really understand. You can sign up to receive text messages on your phone, but I couldn’t find out what the content of those messages is. At least it seems to be a free service unless you pay to receive text messages in your mobile phone plan, so if it sounds interesting to you, why don’t you just give it a try? While you’re at it, you may also want to drop them a line. You are invited to fill in a quick survey and let them know what you think of the mobile site and how you suppose it could be better. Hey, I did myself.

Victoria’s Secret is a good example of mobile site to me, besides all the beauty that clearly abounds, it is very straightforward and useful. You can actually get a lot done here with no hassles. It’s just too bad I didn’t get to buy anything to tell you what that part of the experience is like, but like I said, several of the women I polled claimed to buy from Victoria’s Secret online regularly. One of them is in Brazil, she has it shipped internationally and she is not one to put up with shoddy service, so I guess no one is likely to be unhappy about it. I recommend it wholeheartedly. Here is the link again.

On the other hand if you are like me you probably avoid having infrequently used BlackBerry applications installed on your device. I just thought it was worth mentioning that there are two different websites that give you access to radio station playlists (in the USA only from what I can tell) so you can find out what is playing or played on the radio. Think of it as the poor mans “Song ID”

The two websites are:

mobile.Yes.com – This website does not require registration but it may take a minute for you to setup your city from your BlackBerry browser due to the clunky search system. It gives you some pretty good info including name, artist, time, and the ability to skip forward and back in the playlist.

m.nabbit.com – This website does require a free registration but the nice part is that since you register the website always remembers your location. The downside is that you need to register from a PC to set it up correctly. It also lets you mark a song as a favorite for review or purchase later.

I just found out that Emirates.com just launched a mobile version of their site that gives you some good information from your BlackBerry browser. Not sure how many of you fly Emirates but you can now get:

Check-in online up to 24hrs before departure

Select a favorite seat or request a special meal

Eligible passengers can book Chauffeur-drive

Search for the latest Emirates special fares to over 100 destinations worldwide

Check real-time flight status and view global timetables

View the products and services available onboard any specific Emirates flight

Members of Emirates’ Skywards can log-in to view their miles, balance, and itineraries

Check it out by heading to www.emirates.com from your BlackBerry browser.

British Airways also updated their site that they launched back in October of last year. Their site now allows British Airways’ Executive Club members access to their accounts, points and miles balances by logging into the BA.com through their mobile phones. BA.com automatically redirects to the mobile-optimized site if you head to it from your BlackBerry. You can also check it out directly at http://www.ba.com/mobile.

Talk about a confusing move by RIM. They have never really been a “Green” promoting company but I guess even they cannot resist getting in on the action… Now they are trying to promote Earth Hour and turning off your lights on Saturday March 28th at 8:30-9:30 PM at your local time. At least they are not trying to convince you to turn your BlackBerry off.

Seriously though. I never really understood these conventions about earth hour? What do they hope to accomplish? The power plants are still going to be making the electricity that you are not using… I find myself confused about how environmentalists had us going from worrying about global cooling to worrying about global warming to now worrying about global cooling DUE to global warming… but I digress.

Check out RIM’s promotional site for Earth Hour at earthhour.msite.tv. The funny part is that the site only seems to work on Pearl, Bold, Curve, Storm, 8800, & 8900 browsers. All others seem to be too old and lead to a apology screen. I guess RIM is subtly telling you to upgrade.
