I finally caved…… Anyone who knows me I am a live and die BlackBerry guy, and ZERO iphone, or anything else that starts with an “i”. I desperately needed a body guard for my BlackBerry Storm. After doing some research I decided to go with iSkin Vibes and I am so glad I did. The Skin looks and feels amazing. It is also very easy to put it on the blackberry. As an extra bonus you get a anti-glare screen protector. Everyone I know who has a screen protector always has a bubble somewhere,no one has it perfect. With my first try I easily put the one included on and it looks great. 2 points for iSkin!

The iSkin Vibes feels and looks like a hard case, yet it is very flexible and impossible to rip (i tried really hard to tear it). The iSkin has an earphone hole, sync port flap and and opening for the mic. The speaker is covered but

Original Storm to Get Tabbed Browsing, Flick Scrolling, & More

Considering the fact that OS 5.0 is coming to quite a few older devices this is hardly news. Still it is nice to hear a Verizon rep confirm to PhoneArena that the original Storm will be getting the same OS love as the new Storm2 when it is finally announced on Verizon. That means that they will be close to identical in terms of software features.

Features like flick scrolling which we already see in some OS 5.0 betas will be coming along with other updates like tabbed browser. This hopefully means that Verizon will not cripple the original Storm by holding back OS 5.0 for it.

Still it makes me wonder if anybody will purchase the original Storm once the Storm2 is out…

NOTE: THIS RELEASE IS NOT AN OFFICIAL RELEASE and is harder to install since RIM has removed the EXE file from the release! You also need to have OS 5.0.0.191 install on your computer. So consider yourself warned!!!

This release has been a long time coming. The boys at BBOS just let the Storm OS 5.0.0.230 out of the bag. This release brings camera and video camera support to the 5.0 OS fans. The release is hampered by the fact that RIM removed the EXE file but BBCrackman found a way to create an installer without it!

I am not even going to publish the download link since only the brave of heart should apply but you can find the details at this link on BBOS. MAKE SURE TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.

BlackHole – Free Storm Game from S4BB

S4BB let us know that they have released an free game for Storm users. I am not a Storm user myself so I did not get a chance to play it but the game looks fun. Its a little free game where you need to navigate at least half of the shown objects into a black hole.

Jerry let me know that he spotted OS 4.7.0.167 for the Storm on CrackBerry Forums. This leak seems to original from another site but the boys in the forums put up their own mirror download sites. One of them kindly ripped out the RIM Tools that is included in the download. If you still find it installed then make sure to uninstall it before upgrading your OS.

BerryScroll Adds “Flick” Scrolling to Browser, Contacts, Phone, & Media Player

BellShare released a different kind of BlackBerry app called BerryScroll. The purpose of the app is to bring iPhone like “Flick” scrolling to the BlackBerry. In case you don’t know “Flick” scrolling is when you flick your finger up and down and the screen scrolling accelerates and then slows down. Personally I find the flick scrolling kind of annoying on my iPod Touch but I know many people who love it. I can’t get over how developers try to make the Storm more and more like an iPhone…

The app is reasonably priced at $4.99 and brings flick scrolling to the browser, contacts, phone, & media player. Its kind of cool that BellShare found a way to pull this off since I did not think it was possible. I don’t have a Storm to try this out on but I can see this being a pretty popular feature. Let me know if you try it out.

Hedone Design is back with their latest theme release called Digital. A mixture of colorful, swirly images and sleek bottom icons, Digital costs $6.99 and is available for a variety of BlackBerry devices. I am playing with the Bold version as I write this and this theme offers all the charm and swiftness that Hedone Design’s themes are most known for.

I love the bright visuals and the hidden bottom dock as well as the simplicity of the battery/signal meters and the way that everything is centered nicely at the top of the home screen.

IMO, the whole theme screams artistic style and professional execution.

But it doesn’t end there…as an added feature, there’s an expansion pack of additonal, alternative wallpapers that come in that gorgeous abstract image in a variety of other colors.

Slacker Optimized for BlackBerry Storm – 2x Improved Battery Life

Slacker let us know that they updated their application for the BlackBerry Storm to improve Battery life. They claim it has been improved to offer up to twice as much battery life when streaming over 3G.

Full details:

Improved battery life up to 2x (over previous versions) while streaming (Slacker has seen Storm devices playing up to 9 hours over 3G with this build)
Improved usability enhancements to the interface, including a “Home” button to quickly access the station list
Added ability to toggle the explicit content filter (on/off) from the main menu
Addressed an issue where pausing a song for an extended period of time did not properly resume playback
Addressed an issue where phone calls or message alerts would prevent playback from resuming properly for some listeners

No word yet on if this update helps other devices but you never know. I cannot truly imagine how they could optimize an applications battery usage for only one device… but it could be that they will be releasing other builds in the future so that other devices get this improvements.

Premium Windows Mobile 7 Theme from MBCustomz

Though he took a little break from theme designing, Greg over at MBCustomz seems to be back in full swing with his latest release Windows Mobile 7. A mixture of rich blue graphics and colorful icons, Windows Mobile’s home screen has a hidden dock (amount of icons varies between device) and an all around fresh feel. The bold version I tested ran like a pro…the only thing I noticed is that the message alerts on my BlackBerry Messenger icon were getting a little cut off but other than that, everything worked great. Analog Theme from Elecite for the 8900, 9000 & 9500

Elecite’s latest theme design, called Analog, is a mixture of sharp black backgrounds and shimmery chrome accents. According to Peter, they put a lot of effort into the battery and signal meters as well as a 45 degree sliding dock with 8 customizable icons. I have not had a chance to test this theme yet but personally, it’s a bit busy for my tastes…and maybe a touch more masculine too. However, that said it does not go without its charm. 9500 Storm OS 4.7.0.167 Officially Released By Taiwan Mobile

It has been awhile since OS 4.7.0.164 unofficially made its debut for the the 9500 so this is a welcome upgrade. Alessio let me know about the update by Taiwan Mobile but I am not sure where it sourced from originally. It came out over the weekend while I was out on a family event without a PC.

New Opus Theme from Elecite

I got an email last night from Peter about Elecite’s latest theme release Opus. In actuality I was a little surprised as this look tends to differ from the stuff Elecite usually puts out. A rich, dark tapestry like background with an almost dual screen type concept…definitely an eye-catcher. I myself tend to like less icons on the home screen and themes that are more simple in design, however I did test the Bold version and my tastes aside…the theme works well. It’s a pretty good size file to download but once it was activated, it ran really smooth for me.

Opus is available for a variety of devices and take note that the theme will differ between them…so check all the info to make sure you’re getting the theme you expect. According to Peter, [Opus] definitely has its own uniqueness. You get multiple sets of customizable icons by tapping on one of the 2-3 dots on the bottom portion, for the latest BlackBerry models and 1 for the older 8300/8800. It sort of works like the dual-screen animation but faster and smoother. All icons are customizable but the top 5…those cannot be changed. Opus is available for the BlackBerry Storm, Bold, 8900, 8300 and 8800 models. **This theme and like any other Elecite theme, will not work on OS version .151 or the new Tour until we perform the necessary updates.

SmartestCover Wants You to “Feel” Your Storm’s Keyboard

I am not sure what to make of SmartestCover. James spotted this little company that is selling a new screen cover for the Storm that provides touchable little nubs letting you know where your buttons are. Kind of like the little nubs on the F and J keys on a regular keyboard.

Now the interesting part is that you have to decide if you want a portrait (SureType) or landscape (qwerty) version of the screen protector. That means you need to decide which way you type and stick with it.

Its worth taking a look but their site is all flash so its a bit hard to navigate. They also only have 2 tiny pictures of the actual screen protector. $13.99 + $2.95 shipping gets you 3 covers.

9500 Storm OS 5.0.0.140 Found Online! (GSM)

The tips have been flowing in about OS 5.0.0.140 leaking for the 9500 GSM Storm. This compliments the same OS that came out for the 9530 CDMA version last week. It looks like the link originated from BlackBerryRocks but its hard to tell.

So what are you waiting for? Keep in mind that this is still buggy and lots of software will not work!

NOTE: Do not install this software if you do not know what you are doing. It may make your BlackBerry FUBAR or just plain angry.
